Millions of U.S. adolescents are at risk of vitamin D deficiency,
which can lead to stunted growth and osteoporosis. Over the
long term, this may even result in certain cancers, diabetes
and high blood pressure.
Vitamin D deficiency, which doctors are calling an "unrecognized
epidemic," often occurs without anyone knowing and is
therefore left untreated. Youth who do not spend much time
outdoors, or those who live in northern cities were sunlight
is less intense, are at an increased risk of vitamin D deficiency,
along with darker skinned individuals, who do not absorb sunlight
as easily as lighter-skinned individuals.
