How is Agribusiness Adding Inches to Your Waist and Taking Years From Your Life?

Could the real cause of the obesity epidemic facing the nation be an overabundance of cheap food? According to this New York Times article by Michael Pollan, it could be--and it is.

The central premise is that large-scale farmers are producing too much food, for instance "cheap corn" is transformed into "cheap beef," and while these products are inexpensive they are greatly lacking in worthwhile nutrients. The end result is an excess of cheap, poor-quality calories that consumers are driven to consume.

This is a thought-provoking article written by the same New York Times author who told us the truth of how cattle are raised in the United States.

The government makes matters even worse by recklessly encouraging farmers to produce even more unneeded food through its subsidies. We are not talking about lightweight subsidies here either as the government is paying nearly $20 billion to keep this flawed design in place.

Cheap corn is truly the building block of the ''fast-food nation," as the article says. It’s in everything from high fructose corn syrup, which if you read labels you’ll see how many products contain this ingredient, to chicken nuggets (they’re typically made from corn-fed chickens).

Corn, and usually highly processed corn, has become a staple ingredient of the American diet. This is most unfortunate since, contrary to common belief, corn is a grain, not a vegetable, and is definitely not fit as the dietary staple and mainstay it has become. You can read more about the dangers of grains in my book, The No-Grain Diet, but let me tell you now that grains (and sugars) are responsible for the vast majority of chronic diseases facing the nation--and this includes obesity.

If you want to avoid being part of this poor-quality food trend and instead want to better your health, you will need to avoid grains and sugars, both in obvious forms like bagels and candy, and more hidden forms like grain-fed animals. For optimal health you will want to pass up this grain-fed meat in favor of healthy meat.

Obtaining healthy meat means avoiding most grain-fed meats. Grain-free meats not only provide a better balance of omega fats, but the animals are healthier and more humanely raised, and the risk of acquiring an infection from a healthy animal is very remote.

Many stores will advertise beef as grass-fed, because virtually ALL cattle are grass-fed initially. But what matters is what they are fed in the months prior to their slaughter, not what they are fed initially, and most cattle are fed grains during this time.

The least expensive way to obtain grass-fed beef is by locating a farmer and purchasing the products directly. If you are unable to do this we have grass-fed beef suppliers on our site who can overnight the grain-free beef to you.

There are also other healthy meat options beyond beef. Two of the best meats on the planet--in terms of nutritional value and their incredible taste--are bison and ostrich. Please remember you can now get bison meat and exclusive omega-3-rich ostrich meat in our store. Both of these meats are free-ranged, fed primarily grass/alfalfa diets, and contain no antibiotics or steroids.

Disease runs rampant among commercial livestock, and the use of antibiotics is so widespread among these animals that whether from my site or elsewhere, I urge you to try grass-fed beef and bison and ostrich. Not only do these meats provide a healthy, clean source of protein and minerals, but they are great tasting too.
