What Does Europe's Ban of U.S. Meats Mean to You?

After the European Union (EU) banned beef treated with growth hormones, the United States and Canada imposed more than $100 million of sanctions. Now the European Commission is urging the Untied States and Canada to end the sanctions, even though the ban will remain.

The EU is working to compile evidence to further back the ban. So far, EU scientists say they have found that growth hormones may cause cancer.

Meanwhile, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has scheduled a public meeting to discuss whether cloned animals could be used for food. Cloned animals are currently not allowed to be sold as meat due to safety concerns. However, companies that clone farm animals say they are safe for human consupmtion. Consumer groups remain skeptical and are saying cloned meat should be labeled, at the very least.

Dr. Mercola''s Comments Dr. Mercola's Comments:

While the Europeans are banning U.S. meat that has been treated with growth hormones and food that has been genetically modified, the United States is deciding whether it will be legal to sell cloned meat for human consumption and is challenging the European ban on GM food. Do you see anything wrong with this picture?

So far the traditional science suggests that there is nothing wrong with cloned meat, but you know how that goes. On a positive note, it appears that if this passes the FDA will require prominent labeling on the products to indicate that they are coming from cloned animals.

The EU’s beef-import ban reflects Europe’s "better-safe-than-sorry food-safety policy." They are following this same policy in biotechnology by banning the import of genetically modified foods because of safety concerns.

Why is it that we don’t give credit to these risks in the United States? Consuming genetically modified foods is like participating in a giant experiment. There is no telling what the consequences of using these GM foods will be because these products have never existed before now.

Well, when it comes to my health, I know I’d rather play it safe than be sorry later. Since most commercial meat in the United States is full of antibiotics, hormones and disease (not to mention that they are fed mostly grain and GM corn), I highly recommend that you seek out a healthy source of meat.

Obtaining healthy meat means avoiding most grain-fed meats. Grain-free meats not only provide a better balance of omega fats, but the animals are healthier, and the risk of acquiring an infection from a healthy animal is very remote.

Many stores will advertise beef as grass-fed, because virtually ALL cattle are grass-fed initially. But what matters is what they are fed in the months prior to their slaughter, not what they are fed initially, and most cattle are fed grains during this time.

The least expensive way to obtain grass-fed beef is by locating a farmer and purchasing the products directly. If you are unable to do this we have grass-fed beef suppliers on our site who can overnight the grain-free beef to you.

There are also other healthy meat options beyond beef. Two of the best meats on the planet--in terms of nutrition value and their incredible taste--are bison and ostrich. Please remember you can now get bison meat and exclusive omega-3-rich ostrich meat in our store. Both of these meats are free-ranged, fed primarily grass/alfalfa diets, and contain no antibiotics or steroids.

These meats provide a healthy, clean source of protein and minerals and are great tasting too. But perhaps the best part is that you can rest assured you are not eating a science experiment.
