FDA to Review Safety of Irradiated Foods
Posted by: Dr. Mercola

The Food and Drug Administration approved food irradiation based on studies in which animals were fed irradiated food. However, the European Parliament halted most food irradiation when a study involving animals that were fed concentrates of the substances formed by irradiation showed that it may promote colon cancer.

Critics have raised concerns that the FDA’s approval of irradiation was based on studies that could not determine the effects of lifetime exposure to the substances produced by food irradiation.

In light of these concerns, the FDA is planning to review the studies used by the European Parliament.

Most of you are aware of the danger of irradiated food, but if you aren't you should read the summary. I compiled about the problems with this form of food processing. Fortunately, the FDA is now carefully reexamining the evidence before it approves any further foods for this unsafe and potentially dangerous process.

Unfortunately, in January schools will have the option of serving irradiated meat in their cafeterias. I don’t have any children, but this process still angers me greatly. U.S. government officials have taken it upon themselves to ignore the warnings of many well-respected scientists and are offering irradiated beef to school children.

However, the choice is up to local school boards and district food service directors whether or not to purchase irradiated meat, so you can work with your school district to discourage the use of irradiated foods.

The following Web site can be used to obtain more information on how to work with your school district to stop the purchase of irradiated foods: www.safelunch.org.

You can also contact your representative and senators today to urge them not to support irradiated food in school lunches.
