This is Part Two of my interview with Dr. Jordan Rubin. Read Part One here. In my recent review of The Maker's Diet: The 40-day Health Experience that will Change Your Life Forever, by Jordan S. Rubin, N.M.D., Ph.D., I called it "by far one of the most compelling and insightful dietary health books I have ever read, and it will easily be one of the most important and useful dietary health books you ever read."
Since that time I've heard from several of my clinical peers who read the advance review copies of The Maker's Diet, and their praise has been just as high. They agree that this book deserves to become a number one international bestseller because the information in it - and the straightforward and understandable way it is presented - can really "change your life forever."
If you are interested in improving your health for any reason - you have a chronic condition you seek to improve, you are an athlete looking to improve performance, you simply want to optimize already good health - you would indeed "be doing yourself a MAJOR disservice by not reading The Maker's Diet" (which you can preorder now for 30% off at both Amazon.com and BN.com).
Because of my profound respect for this book and its author, I conducted the following interview with Jordan Rubin. It is lengthier than most other interviews I've done and so I am presenting it in two parts (this newsletter and the next). I think you will find it a very engaging interview, and my ultimate hope is that it will provide some deeper insight into why this is one health book I consider an absolute must-read.
6) Dr. Mercola: I think Chapter 6 in The Maker's Diet, "The Desperate Search for Health," is worth the price of the book alone for the incredible insight you offer behind all the diets that have been popular out there, from "The Zone" to the Blood-Type diet to vegetarian and vegan diets. While people need to learn all the myths and truths you present behind all these diets, can you focus here on why the low-carb diet popularized by Atkins may have been a baby-step in the right direction, but is not nearly enough?

Dr. Rubin: Low-carb diets are certainly sweeping the nation. These diets have provided some benefit, but have failed to improve health on a foundational level.
One flaw in modern low-carb diets is their lack of understanding of food quality. As the readers of the Mercola.com e-newsletter know, the quality of food is equally important as the type of foods one eats.
The popular low-carb diets such as Atkin's do a good job of controlling insulin, but in many cases the results stop there. These and other popular diets are very one-dimensional. The diets recommended in books like these may even be dangerous by increasing oxidative stress thus speeding up the aging process.
The Maker's Diet, meanwhile, aims at achieving three foundational health goals. I call them the three I's:
The Maker's Diet focuses on important health issues such as the proper way to exercise, the importance of spiritual, mental and emotional health, and how to make the environment you live in a healthier one. It even provides the reader with the most comprehensive resource guide available today including the highest quality sources of food, supplements, educational materials, and household cleaners, profiling nearly 270 companies.
7) Dr. Mercola: I am certain that readers will find Chapter 11 remarkably useful, as you explain the twenty-one most healing herbs, the 14 most healing oils, and more. Can you comment here on why you believe herbs and oils are essential to achieving optimal health and wellness?
Dr. Rubin: Throughout history people around the world have used herbs and essential oils to aid the body's ability to heal. The Maker's Diet not only tells you which herbs and oils are most beneficial, but gives you easy instructions on how everyone can incorporate them into their daily lifestyle to prevent infection, reduce inflammation and even balance emotions.
8) Dr. Mercola: When some people hear the word "diet" they automatically associate that with suffering -- eating foods they won't enjoy, feeling hungry, feeling cranky and the like. With this in mind, what will people experience with The Maker's Diet?
Dr. Rubin: I included over 100 delicious whole food recipes that are easy to make, and people who have gone through the program say they have never eaten such delicious meals. But that's not to say that becoming truly healthy, meaning for life, is a simple road. As the body detoxifies and addictions are broken, people will have some uncomfortable moments. But the results are well worth it.
9) Dr. Mercola: So exactly how will the diet improve people's health and appearance, and how long typically before people start to see results?
Dr. Rubin: Most people see results within the first few days and are amazed that they can break the bad dietary habits they have had since they can remember.
Women and men both comment on how the appearance of their skin has improved, that their allergies are gone and that they made it through cold and flu season unscathed. I have even heard stories of spouses and children of those that have gone on The Maker's Diet have had their own success stories without fully embracing the program. In fact, someone in my office told me that her husband has lost 30 pounds by following the diet only partially. I ultimately recommend the full program, of course, but readers following even parts of it like this will experience worthwhile health improvements.
10) Dr. Mercola: In my review of The Maker's Diet I explained why your book and my new book, "Dr. Mercola's Total Health Program," are perfect complements to one another. In short, the two share many fundamental similarities but each also provides a wide range and depth of different information that people absolutely need to know if they want to improve their health and life. At the same time, when my newsletter readers delve into your book, they will note a few key differences between our approaches. In general, how would you respond to inquiries about these differences?
Dr. Rubin: I just recently read your book and agree: The Maker's Diet and Dr. Mercola's Total Health Program are excellent companion books and two books that I believe everyone should own.
For those who are already experiencing renewed health with The Total Health Program, I believe their health can improve even further with some of the information contained in The Maker's Diet including advanced hygiene, functional fitness, biblical herbs and oils as well as the comprehensive guide to healthy shopping. In addition, there are over 100 new healthy and delicious whole food recipes, so between the two books that is nearly 300 healthy and delicious recipes.
I only wish that I was able to get the information contained in these two books at the onset of my illness instead of having to suffer through two painful years of trial and error, not to mention over $150,000 of out-of-pocket expenses for alternative treatments.
Anyone who owns these two books will not only have the best health information available, but will be able to help so many of their friends and loved ones restore their own health.
