More FDA Suppression on Antidepressants

An investigation has been set to find out if the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) completely disclosed the conflicting views among its scientists, over the possible link between antidepressants and suicide in children. The FDA tried to justify their position by stating that there hasn’t been any clear-cut evidence to suggest a link between antidepressants and suicidal behavior in children.

The FDA also said that until a link between the two was proven, that parents needed to be provided with the possible rare side effects of the drugs like agitation, anxiety and hostility.

After receiving pressure from families, the FDA decided to issue warnings to patients, regardless of their age, to be watched closely for suicidal behavior when they began taking antidepressants or required a change in dosage.

The FDA released a suicide precaution for antidepressants. However, it released a report by its primary medical officer, Dr. Andrew Mosholder, who examined the antidepressant data and based on his finding of a statistically significant risk of drug-induced suicide for children recommended that FDA follow a "risk management strategy" to discourage physicians from prescribing antidepressant drugs for children off-label.

The FDA's feeble explanation about its failure to take precautionary action is reminiscent of the recent testimony by FBI officials whose ineptitude and failure to take action, in large measure, resulted in the September 11th tragedy.

The following antidepressants on the market pose concerns:

  • Prozac
  • Paxil
  • Effexor
  • Celexa
  • Remeron
  • Lexapro
  • Luvox
  • Serzone
  • Wellbutrin

Most of these antidepressants are known to affect the brain chemical serotonin, which helps regulate mood, but although antidepressants fill an important niche, they do not in any way, shape or form treat the cause of the problem.

Does this mean that antidepressants don’t work?

Absolutely not, but in the vast majority of cases, it may be that a benefit is felt because the person taking the pill believes that the pill will heal their depression. Past studies have even found that antidepressant don’t work any better than placebo pills.

The "science" is quite clear on this.

Depression should be taken seriously, however, as seriously as a diagnosis of a heart attack or cancer. An effective and natural way of treating depression is by taking fish oil or cod liver oil.

By regularly consuming high-quality fish oil, you will receive all the essential benefits of omega-3 fatty acids that are useful in fighting depression.
