Scientists stated that mass vaccination to contain smallpox might not be necessary in the event of a biowarfare attack. The alternative safety precaution was detecting the outbreak early and then administering vaccinations to those who were affected, including front-line workers.
Experts stated targeting those who were infected and giving them the vaccination was an effective answer to containing the outbreak. Smallpox is considered a serious and potentially lethal disease. Fears have been raised regarding the use of smallpox as a biological weapon against the United States, particularly after the events of September 11 and the deaths from anthrax-tainted letters.
After testing several strategies to contain the spread of the disease, researchers found the most important factor was the amount of time it took for people to get home, followed by any delayed reactions to an outbreak.
These findings suggested that targeted vaccinations combined with quick detection were feasible options when it came to containing the outbreaks.
