A New Jersey man was charged with child abuse and neglect last month for failing to apply enough sunblock on his 12-year-old boy prior to a trip to the beach.
The mother of the mentally-disabled boy filed charges against her ex-husband after a trip to the emergency room where the boy was diagnosed with second-degree burns that left bleeding blisters on his shoulders, back and chest. The indictment claims the father failed to protect his son by not putting enough sunblock on his body.
The father could face up to 18 months in prison if convicted. Authorities noted the overwhelming severity of the burns pushed them to prosecute the boy’s father.

This is a great opportunity for me to remind you how important it is to protect your skin from sunburns, but sunblock is not the way! Sunblock can increase your risk of cancer and is a toxic chemical.
Sunblock products claim to prevent sunburns but dont screen out harmful UVA light that causes skin cancer. In fact, sunblock screens out UVB light that promotes the natural generation of vitamin D.
It is extremely important to realize that sun exposure is necessary for optimal health, and avoiding all sun will increase your risk for a number of diseases. The key is to get a healthy amount of sun exposure without overdoing it. In other words, get some sun but dont get burned!
If you want to have healthy skin and enjoy all the natural benefits from the sun, start gradually, going outside for 10 minutes each day at the beginning of the season. Over a few weeks, increase your time so you can soon enjoy normal sun exposure with little risk of skin cancer.
Using your clothing creatively can also protect your skin, and this includes covering up your children who are unable to do so on their own.
Also, on the diet side, eating whole vegetables, preferably raw and specific for your metabolic type, increases antioxidant levels in the body that provide protection against any sun-induced damage.
