As capacities rise for compact flash cards used in PDAs, computers and digital cameras, so have their price tags. For example, a 12-gigabyte flash card can be found on the market for about $15,000.
That’s about the price of a small new car!
Some hobbyists have enlarged their storage capacities in a very creative way: Buying multiple MP3 players and removing their somewhat smaller microdrives.
One Web site recently recommended hobbyists could buy three 4-gigabyte MP3 players made by Creative Labs, remove their microdrives and enjoy the same capacity as the 12-gigabyte flash drive for a fraction of the price ($750).

Unfortunately, not long after I read this Creative Labs began producing new MP3 players that dont allow hobbyists to gut them for their compact flash cards.
Thats a shame because the link above details a fairly painless 12-step process for removing a 4-gigabyte compact flash card from an MP3 player. I guess its back to the drawing board for hobbyists and those who like to take their electric toys apart to see how they tick!
