Tomato Vaccine - The Edible Vaccine

The idea of an edible vaccine is coming closer to becoming a reality as scientists have found a way to incorporate the protein gene-HIV antigen in tomatoes. This astounding discovery was confirmed when scientists found that the protein needed for the vaccine could be derived from both tomato leaves and the tomato fruit itself.

Tomatoes serve as an ideal candidate for this HIV antigen because unlike other transgenic plants that carry the protein, tomatoes are edible and immune to any thermal process, which help retain its healing capabilities. Even more importantly, tomatoes were found to grow at a high rate of success in Russia, compared to bananas, another vaccine producing fruit already used by Western scientists.

Introducing the Protein to the Tomato

Getting the artificial protein gene into the tomato germs was accomplished with the help of a needle. The next step was to cultivate the germs on a special nutrient medium. From there, the plants that grew roots were planted into the soil and grown in the hothouse until they reached maturity and produced fruit. The plants were then tested for the protein, which could be found in the leaves and the tomato plant itself.

Passing on the Health Benefits to the Next Generation

Scientists took the process one step further by finding out whether or not the gene could be passed on to future generations of plants.

This testing process consisted of taking the seeds of the transgenic tomatoes and couching them. This was followed by cultivating a batch of second generation tomatoes, which were also transgenic and were found to contain the anti-gene protein.

Advantages of Transgenic Tomato Plants

  • A possible edible vaccine against HIV/AIDS and hepatitis B
  • Cuts down the likelihood of the passing of infections
  • Inexpensive
  • Don't need special facilities for storage or transportation
  • They taste good

Dr. Mercola Dr. Mercola's Comments:

First of all there is serious question whether or not HIV even causes AIDS. But even if HIV actually "caused" AIDS, the solution for prevention would never be a vaccine. The solution is to improve your immune system so it can normalize any unnatural assaults to it and get it back to an ideal state of health. There are some simple and practical ways to keep your immune system strong, one of the most important being the avoidance of sugar and grains. Sugar immediately decreases how your immune system functions.

Anytime I see that research like this that supports any kind of natural food sources over vaccines as a form of disease prevention or treatment I see it as a very positive stride.

A past Harvard study including nearly 48,000 men found that eating tomato sauce a couple of times a week may reduce prostate cancer risk. Lycopene appears to be the active ingredient in tomatoes responsible for this effect. The tendency for some people would be to run out and stock up on lycopene supplements. This would not be advisable as lycopene is more effective when it is combined with other chemicals in the tomatoes.

I would also advise caution on excess with these particular vegetables. One would clearly not want to follow the typical American strategy, "if a little is good, then more must be better."

If taken in excess, tomatoes will adversely influence one's insulin levels, which can have significant negative influences on health.

If one has a normal weight and exercises aggressively on a regular basis, this effect is significantly regulated due to the improvement in insulin receptor sensitivity and one need not be as concerned about restricting them.

The most effective way to knowing which vegetables you should eat and how many is by finding out your metabolic type. There is a free basic metabolic typing test that you can now take that will give you a general idea of what your nutritional type is. It is important to understand though that the results of the nutritional typing test are just a start in your journey towards health. Your nutritional type is not set it stone. It is dynamic and can change. So following metabolic typing is really a journey and an interactive conversation with your food that you continuously modify based on the way that you feel. One of the most important tools that you can use to help you fine tune your diet would be to complete the questionnaire about 90 minutes after you eat your meal so you can determine precisely just how good or bad that meal was for you and then adjust future meals accordingly.
