Frito-Lay's "Light" chips, formally known as WOW!
chips, are responsible for a number of unpleasant side effects.
Even though the chips are touting a new name, they are still being
fried in olestra, a diarrhea-inducing fake fat.
The Center for Science and Public Interest (CSPI) has taken notice
of these side effects and are trying to warn, as well as deter consumers
from eating Lay's Light, Ruffles Light, Doritos Light and Tostitos
Light chips.
The FDA has received more than 20,000 individual reports of olestra-related
reactions, which is the largest response for any other food additive
in history. The CSPI also sent the FDA 300 additional negative reports
concerning olestra use. Some Frito-Lay's "Light"
victims have reported seeking emergency-room treatment, while others
have had embarrassing episodes of fecal incontinence.
Other commonly reported side effects include:
- Cramps
- Diarrhea
- Bleeding
- Stained underwear
In light of these occurrences, a CSPI executive said Frito-Lay
should have pulled the plug on their chips altogether. The FDA,
on the other hand, doesn't seem to be taking any steps toward resolving
this olestra-related problem.
In 2003, the FDA dropped the requirement for a warning label on
packages with chips containing olestra. The label previously read:
"This product contains Olestra. Olestra may cause abdominal
cramping and loose stools. Olestra inhibits the absorption of some
vitamins and other nutrients. Vitamins A, D, E and K have been added."
The FDA also approved olestra for use in microwave popcorn.
