By joining forces, Intel, the world's leading personal computer chip manufacturer, and Clearwire will attempt to create a global wireless alternative to cable and telephone Internet service.
Clearwire, a wireless broadband company, has already begun building long-range wireless data networks around the world. The network will be based on the emerging WiMax standard and powered by Intel chips inside Windows-based computers. Intel is reportedly spending $150 million to jumpstart this technology.
WiMax claims to be faster than Wi-Fi, the wireless standard popular in home and office networks. Other perks of the WiMax system:
The connection works much like a radio station antenna, so users within a given service region will be able to roam anywhere within that area and stay connected.
Not only will this new technology service as many as 20 United States markets, it will also assist largely ignored places including Canada, villages in Alaska and cities in Mexico. Clearwire is already operating a high-speed wireless service in Jacksonville, Fla. for about $25 a month.
A possible alternative to digital subscriber lines and cable down the line, WiMax is expected to debut in 2006.

This article simply cements the fact that WiMax is the real deal.
When I first read this article, I got so excited I nearly jumped out of my chair. Most of us struggle to obtain high-speed access, me included. I live in a small community and did not have cable modem access at home till earlier this year.
As many of you know I do a lot of traveling, and one of the biggest challenges I face is finding a decent Internet connection. It is pure pleasure when I stumble on to a high-speed connection in my travels. It makes the trip so much easier, as my online presence is so significant I rapidly fall behind when I am restricted to dial-up access.
For those of you don't remember, I first posted information on WiMax earlier this year. In fact, I was one of the first to report on WiMax, which was long before many of my connected geek friends were aware of it.
There is little question that WiMax will change our lives forever. We will FINALLY have inexpensive high-speed universal net access ANYWHERE we go. Although it will take a number of years to fully implement this reality, it is very clear that WiMax is the technology that can take us there.
One of the greatest features of WiMax is that it can be broadcast for 30 miles. This greater range and higher bandwidth gives service providers the ability to offer broadband Internet access directly to homes, without having to worry about the problems that can arise. There will be no need to worry about connection problems when laying down a physical connection over the so-called last mile, which connects homes with service providers' main networks.
Most of us have no idea of the implications of this new wireless technology. However, one that will happen shortly after WiMax is implemented: Virtually free phone calling! Already Vonage and Skype are viable options to traditional carriers. Once we have inexpensive wireless broadband, you will be able to use your notebook to make FREE local and long distance phone calls.
