Apitherapy, a method of curing illnesses with honeybee products, has been practiced since ancient times. However, within the past few decades, conventional doctors have joined forces with holistic practitioners to explore the "healing power" of bee venom.
More specifically, these medical professionals are attempting to discover the anti-arthritic effect of bee venom for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). RA is a destructive, inflammatory disease affecting the joints through:
Researchers discovered that melittin, a powerful anti-inflammatory agent and component of bee venom, might aid in the treatment of RA.
Therefore, to explore the potential benefits of this agent, researchers conducted experiments on rats that were diagnosed with advanced RA.
The researchers attempted to discover the anti-inflammatory effects of bee venom on synovial cells, the cells lining the joints. (The cells tested were obtained from human RA patients.) They found that melittin has the ability to reduce inflammation, much like COX-2 inhibitors, through restraining a DNA binding activity.
Based on these findings, researchers came to the conclusion that the key to the anti-arthritic effects of bee venom lies in melittin's ability to deactivate inflammation.

Exercise is an important tool to treat RA so please be sure to read my newly revised comments on this issue. It is important to always honor your body and avoid exercising if exercising makes your joints worse as the exercise can actually contribute to permanent irreversible joint destruction. I find the elliptical exercise trainer the best type of cardiovascular aerobic equipment for all but especially for those with RA as it has even less force than walking on ones joints.
I have posted a number of stories on my site dealing with the issue of bee venom as an alternative protocol to treat Lyme disease. In fact, Lyme disease is very similar to rheumatoid arthritis.
For over a decade I have used an effective revision of Dr. Brown's antibiotic protocol to treat RA. Dr. Brown was a revolutionary pioneer that determined over 50 years ago that mycoplasma caused rheumatoid arthritis. He used antibiotics as an alternative to the dangerous steroid drugs that were developed during his time. He helped over 10,000 patients go into remission during his lifetime.
However, over the years I have found a number of effective natural methods to relieve symptoms of RA are far superior to pharmaceuticals or surgeries. These alternatives include:
Optimized nutrition. Initially, this involved the restriction of foods that impair the immune system like sugar and trans fat. However, I also recommend high levels of omega-3 fats like DHA and EPA from fish and cod liver oil.
Energy Psychology tool: Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT). It is very rare where we find someone with a serious autoimmune disease like rheumatoid arthritis where emotional wounding is not an issue. Thankfully, we have such an effective tool like EFT. While this technique can be learned in a few minutes with my free manual, it is clearly inappropriate to use by oneself to treat serious emotional wounds. It is highly recommended and encouraged that one obtains professional consultations to carefully resolve these problems.
nutritional typing. Individualizing your diet with nutritional typing principles is an absolutely amazing way to improve the results of treating RA, as it is an autoimmune disease. That means that it is thought to occur when the body's immune system turns against itself. That is why it is extremely important to take care of your body and make sure you are eating the right foods according to my plan.
The bottom line is that drugs and surgery are both clearly inferior options for most RA patients as they in no way, shape or form solve the problem. Folks, if you or someone you know has this potentially devastating disease, please seek a form of treatment that addresses the underlying cause.
Failure to treat the disease could condemn a person to a lifetime of misery, as much of the damage of RA is irreversible once it has occurred. Once the joints are destroyed there is no way to bring them back.
