Green Tea Helps You Fight Cancer

For those who don't drink green tea, it might be wise to reconsider. According to research, drinking green tea may help prevent the spread of prostate cancer.

This is because the polyphenols found in the tea target molecular pathways that shut down the production and spread of tumor cells. Further, they inhibit the growth of tumor-nurturing blood vessels. The study, which involved using a mouse model for human prostate cancer, indicated the consumption of green tea polyphenols (GTP) adjusted and reduced levels of the insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1)-driven molecular pathways in prostate tumor cells.

The findings supported other studies, which found that increased levels of IGF-1 were associated with the increased risk of various cancers, including:

  • Prostate
  • Breast
  • Lung
  • Colon

Researchers also discovered that these GTP reduced the expression of proteins typically linked to the metastatic (additional location) spread of cancer cells. This is because the polyphenols inhibited the levels of urokinase plasminogen activator as well as cellular molecules linked to the metastasis.

Dr. Mercola Dr. Mercola's Comments:

You may remember an article I posted earlier this year about the polyphenols in green tea being more effective at fighting the progression of cancer than the antioxidants found in red wine, grapes and peanuts. Well, as noted in the article, it has again been discovered that green tea polyphenols, called EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate), may be another useful tool for preventing prostate cancer.

It is important to recognize, however, that while tea is an acceptable fluid to drink, tea is ideally consumed in moderation because it contains potentially high levels of fluoride. And for this reason, I've always limited my tea consumption. Even more alarming, some teas have been found to contain aluminum too.

There is good news, though, if you would like to drink tea, either for its health properties or taste. Body Ecology Diet's Green and Black Tea Extracts contain virtually no fluoride or other toxic heavy metals -- and they are caffeine free!

There are a number of other safe, healthy alternatives to treating prostate cancer that don't rely on the use of medications. You see, I don't believe it is wise to implement aggressive, traditional medical strategies to treat prostate cancer, as it is a relatively slow-growing cancer and is easy to control if caught early enough.

The Health Benefits of Green Tea -- and Nothing Else

Most green (and black) teas contain excess amounts of fluoride and other heavy metals. Body Ecology Diet's Green and Black Teas contain virtually no fluoride or other heavy metals -- and they are caffeine free!

Thus, much research has been done on what you can take naturally to assist in treating prostate cancer. In a Harvard study including nearly 48,000 men, researchers found eating tomato sauce a couple of times a week may help.

Lycopene appears to be the active ingredient in tomatoes that is responsible for this effect. (Hearing this may motivate some people to run out and stock up on lycopene supplements, however this would not be advisable as lycopene is more effective when it is combined with other chemicals in the tomatoes.) Also, if taken in excess, tomatoes will adversely influence one's insulin levels.

Another healthy alternative to treat prostate cancer is to add a source of high-quality cod liver oil in your diet. This is because cod liver oil is the ideal source of EPA and DHA for prostate cancer prevention. It is loaded with vitamin D, which may be even more important than EPA and DHA in prevention of prostate cancer. Interestingly, cod liver oil is one of the best natural therapies you can implement to help a failing memory as well.

In addition to tomatoes and vitamin D, some other tools you can use to fight or prevent prostate cancer include:
