It seems as though many food companies are trying to provide consumers
with innovative products that provide a range of nutrition benefits--and
cereal and cookie maker Kellogg, based in Battle Creek, is no exception.
Kellogg’s Supply Agreement
According to a biotech company that signed a supply agreement with
the maker, Kellogg could begin adding heart-healthy compounds to
its products very soon.
The 15-year signed agreement was with Columbia, Md.-based Martek
Biosciences for an omega-3 fatty acid called docosahexaenoic acid,
or DHA. The company’s long-chain omega-3 fatty acids are commonly
found in baby formula to encourage eye and brain development. DHA
is pivotal in preventing heart disease, cancer and many other diseases;
conversely, low DHA levels have been linked to depression, schizophrenia,
memory loss and a higher risk of developing Alzheimer’s.
Omega-3 Fatty Acids--Found in Fish
- Mackerel
- Salmon
- Herring
- Lake trout
Not only are these sources of omega-3 believed to prevent cardiovascular
disease, but the Food and Drug Administration has also noted DHA
and EPA (eiscosapentaenoic acid that is just as important to the
diet as DHA) could be marketed for their benefits to the heart;
and Martek is attempting to widen that market.
Kellogg plans for the initial product launch of its new products
to occur in mid-2006, though final product selection, food formulation
and consumer testing still has to take place. Also, there is no
guarantee that the supply agreement will result in a line of Kellogg
DHA-fortified products.
