Bread: The Half-Baked Truth Revealed

  1. More than 98 percent of convicted felons are bread users.

  2. Fully HALF of all children who grow up in bread-consuming households score below average on standardized tests.

  3. In the 18th century, when virtually all bread was baked in the home, the average life expectancy was less than 50 years; infant mortality rates were unacceptably high; many women died in childbirth; and diseases such as typhoid, yellow fever, and influenza ravaged whole nations.

  4. Every piece of bread you eat brings you nearer to death.

  5. Bread is associated with all the major diseases of the body. For example, nearly all sick people have eaten bread. The effects are obviously cumulative:

    • 99.9 percent of all people who die from cancer have eaten bread

    • 99.7 percent of the people involved in air and auto accidents ate bread within 6 months preceding the accident

    • 93.1 percent of juvenile delinquents came from homes where bread is served frequently

  6. Evidence points to the long-term effects of bread eating: Of all the people born since 1839 who later dined on bread, there has been a 100% mortality rate.

  7. Bread is made from a substance called "dough." It has been proven that as little as a teaspoon of dough can be used to suffocate a lab rat. The average American eats more bread than that in one day!

  8. Primitive tribal societies that have no bread exhibit a low incidence of cancer, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's disease, and osteoporosis.

  9. Bread has been proven to be addictive. Subjects deprived of bread and given only water to eat begged for bread after as little as two days.

  10. Bread is often a "gateway" food item, leading the user to "harder" items such as butter, jelly, peanut butter, and even cold cuts.

  11. Bread has been proven to absorb water. Since the human body is more than 80 percent water, it follows that eating bread could lead to your body being taken over by this absorptive food product, turning you into a soggy, gooey bread-pudding person.

  12. Newborn babies can choke on bread.

  13. Bread is baked at temperatures as high as 400 degrees Fahrenheit! That kind of heat can kill an adult in less than one minute.

  14. Most bread eaters are utterly unable to distinguish between significant scientific fact and meaningless statistical babbling.

In light of these frightening statistics, we propose the following bread restrictions:

  1. No sale of bread to minors.

  2. A nationwide "Just Say No To Toast" campaign complete celebrity TV spots and bumper stickers.

  3. A 300 percent federal tax on all bread to pay for all the societal ills we might associate with bread.

  4. No animal or human images, nor any primary colors (which may appeal to children) may be used to promote bread usage.

  5. The establishment of "Bread-free" zones around schools.

Dr. Mercola''s Comments Dr. Mercola's Comments:

A couple days early but ... April Fool's! We all need a good laugh once in a while and what better time than April Fool's Day?

If you enjoyed the article above, or the other April Fool's joke, half as much as I did, then please forward this page to a friend or relative by using the blue Email to a Friend link on the very top upper right section of this page (right below the search box). You can also include a short note with something specific for them as to why they might want to consider subscribing to the newsletter to improve their health.

But getting back to the bread, as simple as it sounds... laughing and smiling, in other words allowing yourself to get swept away with overall good humor, is extremely beneficial to your health. Specifically, it improves your cardiovascular system, respiratory system, muscular system, central nervous system and endocrine system. Research has also shown that laughing can boost the immune system, helping your body to stay disease free and fight colds and the flu, and can help people with type 2 diabetes.

A little laughing and smiling (not to mention an innocent joke here or there) will go a long way toward improving your health, so try it--you have nothing to lose! There are so many things out there to smile about and all you have to do is find one.

... . The REAL Facts Behind Grains

Edging toward a more serous side now, if you are a regular reader of the newsletter, you know that probably over 85 percent of Americans are best served by avoiding grains. Especially if they struggle with:

  • Weight control
  • Diabetes
  • High blood pressure
  • High cholesterol
  • Or are a Protein nutritional type

The use of grains is an easy subject to get confused on. I was certainly confused when I first started my journey in health. Prior to starting medical school, all my health reading pointed to the tremendous importance of whole-grains. Much of the work was based on the work of the African physician missionary Dr. Dennis Burkitt who established the fiber hypothesis in the 60s.

I bought into the theory hook, line and sinker, so much so that when I was in medical school 25 years ago, I was referred to as "Dr. Fiber" for my passionate views about the health benefits of fiber. Since then, I have subsequently learned that grains for most people, yes even whole-grain, organic wheat, are best avoided by the vast majority of the population.

Moreover, though whole-grains are called "complex" carbohydrates, clinically they do not function like them. They function more like simple sugars. The biochemically authentic complex carbohydrates are the above ground vegetables. They are also made from simple sugars, but the linking in the vegetables is far more interlinked--these different links require a large number of protein enzymes in order to break. The large number of different links delays the release of the sugars from the vegetables into your blood stream, thus minimizing insulin release into your blood. It's these elevated insulin levels that appear to be the cause of most chronic diseases. Therefore, if you can manage to keep your insulin levels low, then you will increase your chances of staying healthy.

So all kidding aside, seek to minimize your use of grains if you are striving for optimal health.
