Will today's health care be considered barbarism tomorrow?
Studying the human body is a whole lot like studying space. Every
time we think we know something about the brain, the cells or genetics,
we uncover another black hole and realize that, in terms of percentage,
we know far less than we knew before. Once upon a time, we thought
there were 1,000 stars to discover and knew of 100 (10 percent).
Now, we know of 1,000 stars but realize there are millions (less
than 1 percent). These same percentages hold true to body functions,
health and healing.
I believe God made knowledge this way on purpose. In fact, the
key to genius is an appreciation for the mysterious unknown. Einstein,
whose theories are as large a part of science and invention today
as they were a century ago, said, "All I want to know are God's
thoughts, the rest are just details."
Einstein understood the greater part of wisdom was to just keep
biting into the eternal unknown. Because he understood how little
we really know, he became the greatest scientific genius in history.
Because of our limited knowledge at any given time--I call these
prejudices--the most dangerous act you can commit with the human
body or any part of nature is to manipulate or alter it in some
way.
If you've ever read (or watched) a Harry Potter story, a good
portion of the comedy is to watch these junior witches attempt magic
before they "completely" know what they're doing.
In one particular movie, an incompetent witch tries to heal Harry's
broken arm and instead turns all of his bones into liquid.
The practice of medicine will always be prone to "Harry Potterism."
Any time you take a drug or undergo a surgery, some part of the
information is missing. This mis-information can range from deadly
to creating permanent suffering and disability.
New Technology ... For the Middle Ages
Do you know what Unguentum Armarium is? Well, if you were born
in the Middle Ages, you would. It was cutting-edge science at that
time.
To make Unguentum Armarium, you need to:
-
Obtain a half-pound of grease from a wild boar (and a tame
one) and the same quantity of bear fat and gather a goodly portion
of earthworms.
-
Place everything into a pot, seal it and cook lightly.
-
Take a quantity of moss grown from the skull of a hanged man
and press it into the shape of four walnuts.
-
Add a little wine and mix all of it together.
Once that's done, you have created Unguentum Armarium, the
ointment of war. This was the premiere treatment for battlefield
wounds in medieval days.
Oddly, it wasn't used as you might think. Research at that
time showed the best way to use Unguentum Armarium was not to put
it directly on the wound. Rather, the instructions were to put it
on the business end of the weapon that caused the wound (probably
the only drug ever created that didn't have side effects).
Because of the "black hole" issues with understanding
the body, we understood nothing in medieval times and actually,
by comparing percentages of known information, know even less now.
Scientists always admit they know about 5 percent of the real laws
of science. However, no matter how much we learn, it always stays
at 5 percent. Any more would be to understand God's job and
He doesn't want to be replaced any time soon.
Over time, Unguentum Armarium eventually evolved into putting arsenic
on wounds, then bloodletting, leeches, drilling a hole in the head
to let out evil spirits and finally Vioxx, Bextra, Prozac, statins,
Ritalin, vaccines and antibiotics. I wonder how barbaric our treatments
are going to look to the next generation?
"They took what for pain? Didn't they know that would
destroy their heart?"
"They gave narcotic stimulants to kids to calm them down?"
"They injected viruses and mercury into people to keep them
well?"
"They killed all of the bacteria in their systems to help
with a runny nose?"
I think I'll wait before chatting about Unguentum Armarium
with my kids. For now, I'll stick to the sound nutritional
advice Dr. Mercola dispenses here, Chiropractic care and any other
lifestyle decisions that allow the unknown miracle of the human
body to thrive without interference.
