Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) is one of the few healing protocols that recognizes the association between physical ailments and emotional or traumatic events.
After using EFT to clear unresolved negative emotions, allergies and sinus conditions have been shown to clear almost immediately and often permanently. This is often impressive to those who are new to this idea.
Western medicine is just beginning to understand the connection between unresolved emotional issues and illness. EFT goes beyond that understanding and it has been utilized for years by physicians and laypersons to relieve emotional trauma and its accompanying physical manifestations.
Research Points to Stress as a Cause
Dr. Rosalind Wright, professor at Harvard Medical school, reports that when a person is under stress, brain chemicals and hormones are released into the blood stream and certain allergic responses like hay fever, asthma and eczema can result. According to Dr. Wright, "Negative emotional responses disturb the carefully constructed equilibrium of the brain systems.
If this imbalance goes on unchecked and becomes persistent, long-term damage and disease can result."
While this research does indicate that persistent negative emotional responses can ultimately result in allergic reactions, EFT attributes this dynamic as a result of disruptions in the body's subtle energy system rather than a disturbance in the brain systems, as Dr. Wright proposes.
Furthermore, EFT also offers a much-needed solution to this problem with its ability to bring refreshing relief to trauma, grief and other unresolved emotional issues.
EFT has delivered a modern approach to healing emotionally charged illnesses. This form of do-it-yourself emotional acupuncture is gentle and effective and has been shown to work about 80 percent of the time. The basics of EFT can be learned by anyone and can be self-applied (usually in minutes). In more involved cases, a seasoned EFT practitioner will be able to do the detective work necessary to weed out the more complex emotional roots of a physical ailment.
Chronic sinus problems and allergies cleared
by resolving emotional response to traumatic incident
Ken Botwinick's client "Millie" was suffering with incapacitating allergies and a sinus condition. In the previous year, doctors wanted to perform surgery on Millie to scrape out her sinuses. At that time she saw Ken, who helped her with herbal remedies and other natural methods.
He had not learned EFT at that time. Those positive effects lasted about a year and, as the symptoms worsened, she returned to Ken for help. This time he used EFT as Millie's treatment.
The first thing Ken asked was, "When did this first become a problem for you?" Millie indicated that it had started in junior high school. Next, Ken asked if there had been a traumatic event that occurred around that time.
Millie immediately became very sad, close to tears and indicated that there was indeed a traumatic event. Further, it also affected her mother and brother, both of whom had major health problems start at that time.
At that point, her emotional response was so intense that Millie could not even describe the event to Ken. With EFT, healing is often achieved without the client ever telling the practitioner what the event was. In this case, Millie did describe her feelings as being a sinking heaviness in her heart, and a tightness and nausea in her stomach. She said that she felt sick just thinking about the event.
The sense of heaviness was so pervasive that she always felt anxious and nervous. This affected her daily life and currently Millie was feeling especially anxious about an upcoming interview for a job that she wanted but felt that she was not very qualified for.
Ken performed EFT with Millie for about 75 minutes after which she reported that she no longer felt nauseous when thinking about the traumatic event. In fact, she was finally able to recount the event without any of her former emotional responses (she had been traumatized when her sister was shot in the head by her boyfriend, leaving behind a newborn who was now an adult).
Millie had been carrying around the trauma of this event for decades, and could now think about it without difficulty.
Ken reminded Millie of her anxiety around her upcoming job interview and now she said that the anxiety was gone and she felt very confident about the interview.
But Millie initially came to Ken for help with her sinus condition. He reported that within a few minutes of beginning the session, he had to run for the tissues as Millie's "sinuses had opened like a floodgate ... her nose was running uncontrollably." It is often the case that, while performing EFT, clients have a bodily manifestation of "getting rid of emotional garbage."
This is considered to be a good thing and EFT users are encouraged to keep going and be persistent with EFT until relief is achieved.
Three weeks later Millie followed up with Ken and reported that she still had no problem whatsoever with her sinuses. She had no recurring anxiety or emotional intensity about the trauma. Furthermore, not only was she confident and calm during her job interview, but she got the job and feels confident in her abilities.
