Deadly Mold Poisons Pet Foods

PetsAt least 76 dogs throughout the United States have died after eating contaminated Diamond Pet Foods.

Diamond has recalled 19 varieties of dog and cat food after tests showed high levels of aflatoxin, a toxic chemical stemming from a grain fungus. Aflatoxin causes liver damage in animals.

Any customers who have purchased Diamond Pet Food manufactured in their South Carolina plant should immediately cease using it, and return any remaining product to their retailer. The range being reviewed go from those marked "Best By 01-March-07" through "Best By 11-June-07."

Diamond has said they will reimburse pet owners for vet bills and other costs. They have created a call center staffed with veterinarians.

Some of the recalled pet food was also exported to at least 29 other countries. These countries have been notified of the problem.

Dr. Mercola Dr. Mercola's Comments:

Aflatoxin is a carcinogenic mold that grows on crops like peanuts and corn when they're stressed from drought. It only takes a small amount of aflatoxin to ruin food and pretty much nothing can be done to deactivate it once it gets there.

If you're concerned about your pet's health as a result of this product recall, please check out this report that will provide details on which foods have been contaminated.

I hope the deaths of these animals will convince you to reconsider modifying your pet's diet from processed food containing unnecessary grains to fresh meat and vegetables.

Just as you can benefit by optimizing your diet according to your body's unique nutritional type, you can help your cat or dog live a long and healthy life by ridding their daily diets of grains, "fake foods" they, along with their owners, were never meant to eat in the first place.

If you have a dog, I highly recommend you read the excellent book, See Spot Live Longer. With philosophies similar to my own regarding the importance of nutrition, See Spot Live Longer presents solid evidence that a good diet is just as important for dogs as it is for us. When fed a proper raw diet appropriate for their body, hundreds of people, including veterinarians, have witnessed vast health improvements in their dogs.
