At least 76 dogs throughout the United States have died after eating contaminated Diamond Pet Foods.
Diamond has recalled 19 varieties of dog and cat food after tests showed high levels of aflatoxin, a toxic chemical stemming from a grain fungus. Aflatoxin causes liver damage in animals.
Any customers who have purchased Diamond Pet Food manufactured in their South Carolina plant should immediately cease using it, and return any remaining product to their retailer. The range being reviewed go from those marked "Best By 01-March-07" through "Best By 11-June-07."
Diamond has said they will reimburse pet owners for vet bills and other costs. They have created a call center staffed with veterinarians.
Some of the recalled pet food was also exported to at least 29 other countries. These countries have been notified of the problem.
