The FDA has announced that two prescription eczema creams will need to bear "black box" warnings of possible cancer risks. The creams, Elidel and Protopic, are now recommended for use only after other prescription medications have failed.
There have been nearly 80 reported cases of cancer in patients treated with the two drugs. Novartis Pharmaceuticals, which manufactures Elidel, announced that it is still confident in the safety and efficacy of Elidel.
In addition to the reported cancer cases, animal tests show an increase in cancer risk associated with the drugs.
These two popular prescription skin screams for treating eczema were linked to increased risks of certain cancers close to a year ago. It certainly took the FDA long enough to finally get around to requiring black box cancer warnings on both drugs.
Folks, given the risks, it is beyond ludicrous to use these creams in the first place, especially when there are many safer dietary solutions -- that treat real cause of the problem.
