The problem of doctors operating on or even removing the wrong limbs or organs, or performing surgery on the wrong patients, has been growing worse, according to the non-profit Joint Commission on Accreditation of Health Care Organizations.
A study of almost 3 million operations over a 20-year period indicates that roughly one in every 113,000 operations (excluding spinal operations, which are generally carefully verified) is a "wrong site" mistake.
While this seems to be a low rate, the study still judged it to be unacceptably high.
Since 2004, doctors have been required to mark where they plan to operate during pre-surgery patient consultation. But many doctors ignore the protocols, considering them unnecessary and time-wasting.
