The following case history dramatically illustrates this point by showing how a high carb diet can actually help normalize blood sugar and weight control.
Roger is 61 year old Insulin resistant type 2 diabetic who has also had, asthma, bad heartburn & gout. He was seen as a new patient in April of this year and as the time was about 55 lbs. over-weight.
He stated that he couldn't lose weight because he has been taking Insulin, plus, his asthma restricts his physical activities. This is a common mistake that many conventional doctors make and is one of the main reasons why most doctors actually cause diabetic to die.
His glucose level had been fluctuating from about 100 to 300, but Roger also reported that his glucose level had been as high as 700 ! He has had asthma & gout for over 20 years. He also had coronary artery disease. (It is at a site that is hard to do surgery on.) and had been taking numerous prescription drugs.
In nutritional typing, he was assessed as a Slow Oxidizing CARB type.
Roger does identify with ALL of the primary symptoms that a Slow Oxidizing CARBO type will be prone to experiencing, if they are not eating right.
For about 6 weeks, from the end of May to the beginning of July, Roger followed the Prime CARB type meal plan (including some grains) much more faithfully than he had been. During that time, he lost weight & gained energy.
Also, amazingly, his blood sugar stability was much better. In fact, for a 2 week period, his blood sugar levels & blood sugar stability were so much better, that he did not take his Insulin because he knew he didn't need it.
In the last 2 weeks however, Roger has only been following the CARB type plan sporadically, and he has gained back some weight & he has also experienced a decrease in his energy. His current weight is 223 lbs and he has lost a total of 15 lbs. since May, without dieting.
This is a common pattern until people are able to address the underlying emotional issues connected with their illness.
However, Roger is well on his way towards beating diabetes permanently and getting off the insulin that is ruining his ability to ever successfully control the diabetes.
