A 56-year-old woman named "Pat" came in for weight loss, hypothyroidism and rheumatoid arthritis. She reported that she had severe pain in her right shoulder due to the arthritis and could not lift her arm even near a 90-degree angle.
She had been to many different physicians, all of whom wanted to put her on anti-inflammatory medication. However, she did not want to take any meds for it as her daughter overdosed on medication a few years earlier and died.
Throughout our conversation, she mentioned that a particular doctor told her she would never be able to lift her arm above her head without anti-inflammatory medication. We tapped for:
"Even though I have this intense shoulder pain ..."
"Even though I don't remember what it would feel like to be without pain in my shoulder ..."
"Even though my doctor told me I won't get better without medication ..."
After these rounds of tapping, she had more mobility in her shoulder, however she was still unable to get to a 90-degree angle. Then we tapped for:
"Even though my doctor told me I will never be able to lift my arm above my head and he must be right, because he is the doctor, and doctors 'know everything' ..."
"Even though I've always learned to listen to the doctor because doctors are always right ... or so I thought ..."
"I forgive myself for denying my own belief system and for believing that the doctor is always right ... I was doing my best given my history (and what my family taught me about doctors), my background, my resources and my inability to understand what my own needs were at that time."
"I also forgive the doctor for putting this writing on my walls that I won't be able to lift my arm above my head without medication ... he too was doing his best, given his history, his education and his inability to understand my needs ... this is his truth, but it does not have to be mine ... "
After these rounds of tapping, 'lo and behold she lifted her entire arm above her head and was even able to reach over to her opposite shoulder. She was pleasantly surprised.
If this last round of tapping hadn't released the pain and lack of mobility, I would have addressed her daughter's overdose, but apparently that was not the cause of this particular problem.
When we started dealing with weight loss, however, we did address this issue and all the emotions that went along with it. I saw "Pat" for EFT on various issues in her life for about one year. Within this time we addressed weight loss and other past traumas in her life. She lost a great deal of weight and the pain in her shoulder never returned.
