Why Do Restaurants Feel Like Home to So Many Obese Consumers?

Posted By Dr. Mercola | October 24 2006 | 2,384 views

More and more American families are choosing to eat out rather than eat in.

Many are finding that eating at restaurants saves time, and does not cost significantly more than eating at home.

Surveys have shown that restaurant patrons now tend to view restaurants as extensions of their own homes. More than half of the average household food budget will soon be spent on meals bought outside the home, twice as much as in 1955.

As a result, American restaurants will bring in above a half-trillion dollars in total sales this year, the first time this has ever happened.

Eating out is considered a major cause of obesity in America, according to the FDA.

Dr. Mercola's Comments:

We have been in the middle of an obesity epidemic for some time now and this is partially a result of many choosing to use restaurants as a convenient, and sometime less expensive, alternative to preparing food at home.

With so many time pressures on us it is easy to understand why many choose the easy way out and eat many of their meals at restaurants. America has shifted to a convenience food culture, and that is one of the primary reasons why we are experiencing such a radical increase in most chronic degenerative diseases.

Either you or someone you know simply needs to invest some time in your kitchen and prepare wholesome, unprocessed nutritious foods on a regular basis if you are to have any hope or chance of achieving optimal wellness.

If you choose the easy way out and rely on restaurant food for most of your meals, you are simply cutting off decades from your lifespan.

Your choice.

It is the middle of October and it takes about three months to set a habit. Why not start now so that when New Year's comes around you will have this healthy goal already established?

Seek to  reverse the usual American ratio, and strive for a diet of 90 percent non-processed food and only 10 percent from other sources, like restaurants. Not only will you enjoy numerous health benefits, but you will gain the satisfaction of preparing meals and being able to control the ingredients.

Yes, it takes more time and energy to follow the nutrition plan than to eat out, but doing so could:

  • Add years to your lifespan
  • Give you more energy than you know what to do with
  • Help you avoid cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and arthritis

Even though I have virtually no free time, I remain very committed to preparing more than 95 percent of my own meals to preserve my health. At times, this decision can be a hard one, but it's crucial to your health and, speaking from experience, it can be done.
