How to Eat Healthy on the Road
Posted by: Dr. Mercola

TravelEating healthily on the road can often be difficult.  Discovery Health recently unveiled their list of the top 10 rules to eat well and maintain your health while traveling, including:

  • Pack your own food. If you spend a lot of time in your car, consider buying a small cooler.
  • Plan Ahead. Before getting on a plane or a train, eat a healthy breakfast.
  • Get the healthier menu items at fast food restaurants, such as grilled fish, chicken salad or a grilled chicken sandwich for lunch or dinner.
  • Avoid late-night eating. Consuming calories late at night is an easy way to gain weight.
  • Watch your alcohol intake. Keep to one glass of wine with meals, and avoid hard liquor.
  • Maintain your exercise regimen.

Because I log a great deal of frequent flier miles every year, I've learned to take some simple precautions to protect my health away from home, like taking a high-quality probiotic, especially on international trips, and paying attention to the source of the water and ice flight attendants serve in drinks.

Many of Discovery Health's suggestions mirror my own. If you're going to eat out at a restaurant, do it wisely and stay away from processed foods as much as you can. Plan the meals you eat more carefully before you fly. And it's very important to maintain your exercise regimen.

In general, it's important not to overindulge while you're away from home. Be careful not to stray too far from your normal eating patterns. Overindulging on junk food, fried foods and alcohol will have effects that will linger long after you get home.

Curb the temptation to sabotage your diet by choosing more health-conscious restaurants, and bring along some food from home. Hard-boiled eggs, sliced vegetables, cherry tomatoes and raw coconut slices make great snacks for car rides or long waits in airports.

If you're not sure what's best to eat, you can check out my nutrition plan for some advice on how to get your diet on the right track. If you didn't see my video update on meal planning a few weeks ago I would definately view it for further practical insights.

And if you do a lot of your traveling by car, you'll also want to review Dr. Colleen Huber's excellent piece on optimizing your food sources.
