Print
The life insurance Web site, LifeInsure.com, collected a list of 19 historical errata, superstitions and just plain weird facts about death. Here's a sampling of a few, although you will need to click the link below to see the complete list:
  • After being decapitated, the average person remains conscious for another15 to 20 seconds.

  • Henry Ford preserved Thomas Edison's last dying breath. He kept it in a bottle.

  • It takes 2.5 minutes to fall from the top of Mt. Everest to the bottom.

  • Nearly 2,500 left-handed people die each year as a result of using products meant for right-handed people.

  • 100 people each year choke to death on ballpoint pens.

  • A cockroach can survive for nine days without a head, before finally dying of starvation.

Dr. Mercola's Comments:

As you know, I'm very fond of sharing lists that educate, and are humorous and healthy. Death is an inevitable reality that preoccupies many of us, at least in terms of trying to put it off for as long as possible.

The good news: If you make the right lifestyle choices, you may not have to worry about facing death for a very long time.

This site is loaded with thousands of pages that can educate you about simple inexpensive lifestyle choices that will allow you to avoid dangerous medications so you can live as long as you were designed to with as much function, energy and vitality as you can possibly achieve.

But it's all relative isn't it?

In the universal perspective of eternity one century sure seems like a nanosecond.  I recall frequently reflecting on this topic when I was about 4 years old. That was nearly half a century ago and the topic still is fascinating to me ,and, of course, immediately suggests spiritual concepts.

If you believe that this existence is only a transition to the next level than it is very easy to not be afraid of death. If you believe that after you die that is all there is, then fear would certainly seem a logical reaction -- doesn't change the outcome of course, but does change your frame of reference.

The above article elicited a few reactions, especially the last point made. On Vital Votes, a reader from Cabool, Missouri, makes the following observation:

"Number 19 is very true, not just allegedly, this I know from personal experience."

Fact number 19 states that your sight is the first to go when you die, and your hearing is the last to go. This prompted another reader to query:

"Do you remember it from a previous life or have a near-death experience this time around?"
