Researchers have discovered that a molecule called nicotinamide, a component of vitamin B3 (niacin), binds to a sirtuin protein and prevents it from unleashing its renowned anti-aging effects.
A drug that prevents the niacin-sirtuin interaction could therefore help counteract age-related disorders, including obesity and type 2 diabetes.
Two Massachusetts-based companies are already working to develop drugs that affect sirtuin activity. Elixir Pharmaceuticals has filed more than 20 patents or applications related to a sirtuin class of compounds.
In January, I posted a video explaining how regulating the production of sirtuins can help you live a longer life. Since whole fruit concentrates like those from grapes can also easily influence these genes, there is amazing potential for easily extending your lifespan.
Unfortunately, drug companies are rapidly jumping on this bandwagon to develop UNnatural analogs that they can patent and use to make a handsome profit. You can be virtually guaranteed that these synthetic analogs will be grossly inferior to the real deal in nearly every aspect, especially side effects and potential toxicity.
Restricting your calorie intake will certainly do the trick as well, but it's not very satisfying for most, and is virtually impossible to pull off. You can enjoy similar benefits, however, if you limit your caloric intake on foods that raise your insulin levels, meaning you'll want to consume fewer grains and sugars, the foundation of my Total Health Program.
Boosting your intake of resveratrol from natural sources -- among them whole grape skins and seeds -- will accomplish nearly the same thing, without the need for restricting calories.
Resveratrol is also found in raspberries, mulberries and peanuts, and is known to have a number of beneficial health effects, including fighting cancer. It belongs to a family of compounds known as polyphenols, which are known to combat damaging free radicals in the body.

"Just today Roche announced MASSIVE lay offs in R&D, spinning it with that it will not effect their out sourcing operations (yeah right, no one to develop anything and no one the check quality)."This comes on the headline of Pfizer laying off 10,000, and Cardinal Health selling off their pharmaceutical production holdings, as well as some other pharma operation (who's name escapes me at the moment the implosions are coming so fast and furious) last week laying of 3,000 on their payroll."Last week the NY Times had an article on the massive failure rates of biotech companies not delivering revenue, from many failed launches, to investors, called 'ZOMBIE' corporations."While Big Pharma is trying to patent their way (still) to monopolistic block buster drugs, YOU who are reading Dr. Mercola can get the same results, or better, for less, or free, with much higher safety."
