How High Fructose Corn Syrup Damages Your Body
Posted by: Dr. Mercola

Drinking high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS), the main ingredient in most soft drinks throughout the world, increases your triglyceride levels and your LDL (bad) cholesterol. These effects only occurred in the study participants who drank fructose -- not glucose.

Consumption of beverages containing fructose rose 135 percent between 1977 and 2001. Food and beverage manufacturers began switching their sweeteners from sucrose (table sugar) to corn syrup in the 1970s when they discovered that HFCS was not only cheaper to make, it was also sweeter, a switch that has drastically altered the American diet.

In 1966, sucrose made up 86 percent of sweeteners. Today, 55 percent of sweeteners used are made from corn.

In case you forgot, or never knew in the first place, the number one source of calories in the US is high fructose corn syrup.  Let me say that in different words so you more fully appreciate the impact of this fact.  Remember that fat has 250% more calories than sugar, but even with this major disadvantage, the food that most people get MOST of their calories from is sugar from corn, primarily in the form of soft drinks.

Even though I have known this for years, it is still shocking to me every time I reflect on the enormity of this truth.  But, like W. Clement Stone, I believe that there is a nugget of good in this horrible fact. The good is that stopping this pernicious habit is one of the easiest things to do. Since this is such a pervasive problem in the US, we could make radically outrageous improvements in our health as a culture if we just simply stopped everyone from drinking soda.

I am HIGHLY confident that the health improvement would be FAR more profound than if everyone stopped smoking because elevated insulin levels are the foundation of nearly every chronic disease known to man, cancer, heart disease, diabetes, aging, arthritis, osteoporosis, you name it, and you will find elevated insulin levels as a primary factor.

This evidence of an increase in triglyceride levels and LDL (bad) cholesterol levels is just the latest among countless findings pointing to the dangers of High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS).

Part of what makes HFCS such an unhealthy product is that it is metabolized to fat in your body far more rapidly than any other sugar, and, because most fructose is consumed in liquid form, its negative metabolic effects are significantly magnified.

HFCS has also been linked to:

The delusion that fructose is an acceptable form of sugar is quite prevalent in many nutritional circles. In fact, nearly all simple sugars are metabolized quickly and disrupt insulin levels, which contributes to most chronic illness. Eating small amounts of whole fruit will not provide tremendous amounts of fructose and should not be a problem for most people, unless diabetes or obesity is an issue but fruit juices, sodas and other beverages sweetened with fructose should be avoided.

To add insult to injury, the corn that the high fructose corn syrup is metabolized from nearly all comes from genetically modified corn which is fraught with its own well documented side effects and health concerns.

High fructose corn syrup is is not something that should be in your diet at all. But HFCS is the primary caloric sweetener in U.S. soft drinks. Researchers estimate that most Americans eat 132 calories of HFCS per day, while the top 20 percent of sweetener consumers eat over 300. And some, they say, eat as much as 700 calories per day of HFCS.

Sodas, of course, are not the only source of HFCS (though they represent one of the main ones). This dangerous sweetener is also in many processed foods and fruit juices, so to avoid it you need to focus your diet on whole foods and, if you do purchase packaged foods, become an avid label reader.

so true RussBianchi - don't forget to mention that HFCR was brought about because it's readily available and very cheap to use - and those two characteristics are what most food manufacturers are looking for - makes it's taste great to the average tastebud who's been bought up on the stuff and continuously wants more.............and it's CHEAP!!!

Quote from Dr. Richard Schulze:  ". . . more people die from heart disease in America every year than the number of American soldiers killed in every war, in every battle that America (U.S.A) has ever been in from the Revolutionary War to Desert Storm.  Does that put it into better perspective?

"What causes this Blockage is fat, animal fat, cholesterol, period.  This is profound, that Heart Attacks and Stroke, the #1 cause of death in America, that KILLS about 1 Million people per year, more that all diseases combined, is a DISEASE of the FORK!"

Cholesterol is used to make HDl, LDL, and VLDL.  These molecules are not cholesterol itself.  Now, LDL circulates in the blood vessels and goes to any site of inflammation because it is an antiinflammatory.  The sites that LDL goes to are damaged due to things like HFCS and trans-fat.
Also, our inflammation systems become chronic and not self limiting if our Omega-6: Omega-3 fatty acid ratio is off.

So saying that cholesterol causes heart disease is like saying a tow truck causes car accidents, because they are always found at wrecks so it must be their fault.

To clarify my statement, High Fructose Corn Syrup, also labeled and known as iso-glucose in the EU, is the chemical and enzymatic conversion, stripping and refining of a starch source (corn, wheat, beet - typically) to a 55 DE sweetness value.

This syrup is NOT recognized in the human Krebs Cycle for conversion to blood glucose for energy, but instead is kilated (converted) to blood triglycerides (the precursor and building block for LDL cholesterol) PR stored as brown adipose tissue (body fat).

Thus HFCS/glucose is an UNNATURAL and MAN MADE hydro carbon, that DOES NOT EXIST IN NATURE, with the reverse isomerizarion or polarity of levulose, at 4 calories per gram, is stored in humans as 9 calorie FAT.

Affirmation that crystalline fructose is natural or converted differently or safely are also FRAUDULENT & FALSE, ditto hydrolyzed high fructose inulin syrups.

ANY consumption of HFCS causes massive triglyceride spiking in the blood stream!

The empirical medical evidence, which is NOT REFUTABLE, linking HFCS consumption, at ANY LEVEL, to harmful metabolic effect on health has been known since the early 1970's.

Today of about 154 pounds per year, the USDA reports per person in the USA consumed of refined sweeteners, (the number was less than

Excuse me for submitting a quote that caused such great offense. Was it so very upsetting to know that HFCS is not the only cause of disease and obesity?

The whole saturated fat thing was an interesting lesson for me. Interested in seeing the actual scientific process, I did my best to research the latest experiments in the field.

One of the latest experiments involves monkeys and varying diets (Check it out here). One group had added polyunsaturates, another had monounsaturates, and the last had saturated fats. The first results didn't give the expected results, so the scientists decided to change the menu. The second batch of results still didn't have the desired results, so the scientists decided to change the menu again. The last time, they severely limited the diets to specific kinds of fats, and then - and only then - did the saturated fat group do badly. The scientists also noted that the monounsaturated group did badly, as well.

The problem? People need fats in order to function properly - omega 6 and omega 3 at the minimum. These two fatty acids are polyunsaturated. By giving extreme amounts of saturated (and monounsaturated) fats to the monkeys, the scientists were not controlling for the loss of the fats that were required by the animals to function.

So, yeah. The groups that didn't get their essential nutrients had many more problems than the group that had at least one essential nutrient. Duh. What's sad is that this is allowed to pass as science.

"Finding the safe limit will be key, and more research is needed to identify those persons most at risk," noted Ms. Fischl. "Until then, healthcare professionals can recommend that, based on several studies, limiting consumption of fructose-containing beverages is probably beneficial."

WRONG!!!! AVOID FRUCTOSE CONTAINING BEVERAGES, PERIOD!  They just can't say it can they!  And these are so called experts in the field with 15 initials behind their names!  We don't need to know a safe limit, we don't need another study.  There are plenty of good studies, along with this one, that show blatantly the detrimental effects and impact it has on the Human body.  Get over it, get used to it and get on with the fact that studies have proven it and every healthcare professional should advise you that you should not consume this CRAP!

Now was that so hard to say?

What is more sad is that my brother-in-law's doctor advised him to keep his youngest son (who looks like a tick) away from sodas and only let him have only diet drinks (including sodas).  How is that going to improve anything?  I tried talking to him; but, he's one of those who really doesn't care.  With a rya old that weighs twice the amount of my stacked 10year old I would think the doctor should have told him to get his child off of his lazy ......um....butt.....and make him exercise and get some sort of activity and drink water.  Actually, all of them would really benefit from doing that.  These are the only people (and they are only children at that) that I have ever seen who have a green tone to their skin (and naturally deeply tanned skin does not just turn colors for no reason).  What color do they need to turn in order for there to be a caution flag raised?

It appears that the real culprit is insulin, produced by the body in response to all the HFCS and other sugars-containing foods we eat.  If you can keep insulin levels low, by whatever means, you can stave off heart disease and all the additional damage (the growing list is huge).

Maybe, we all should "pretend" we are diabetic - even though most of us are not - and eat a diet designed for diabetics.  There is very little unhealthy about that.

You would think so, but all the diabetics I have known, live on "sugar-free" stuff that has artificial sweetners that are as bad as HFCS! Also they eat a lot of regular stuff that you would think they would avoid. When I have questioned them, they say Oh ice cream equals 2 fruits,or I can just take a bigger shot, etc. They seem to have some sort of rules that have more loopholes than protection.
