Ron Paul's Candidacy Gains Momentum

“Thin to the point of gauntness, polite to the point of daintiness,” Ron Paul (R-Texas), “a 71-year-old great-grandfather, a small-town doctor, a self-educated policy intellectual,” is standing out among the 2008 presidential candidates with his firm belief in the principles of the U.S. Constitution, according to this New York Times article.

Calling him “homespun” and “reminiscent of ‘Mr. Smith Goes to Washington,’” the article details Ron Paul’s opposition of the Iraq war, his habit of “communicating with his constituents through birthday cards,” and his unusual “combination of radical libertarianism and conservatism.”

Though he stands as a current underdog -- polls put him in the low single digits -- his lack of ego, and firm adherence to principle, is appealing to people on both the right and the left sides of the fence.

Though Paul reportedly “understands that his chances of winning the presidency are infinitesimally slim,” he is interested in spreading his message just the same.

“Politicians don’t amount to much,” Paul says, “but ideas do.”

Dr. MercolaDr. Mercola's Comments:
Just a few months ago, if you’d have asked me whether I thought presidential candidate Ron Paul (R-Texas) -- one of my heroes -- had a chance of a victory, I would have said "... not likely."

Today, it seems the tables have undoubtedly turned in Dr. Paul’s favor. The fact that The New York Times has devoted this (quite complimentary) article to him is evidence enough of his campaign’s momentum, but, Dr. Paul -- one of the few physicians serving in Congress -- is also the second most-viewed candidate on YouTube (after Barack Obama), and the Republican with the most “friends” on MySpace.com.

Online polls have also pegged Dr. Paul as the  “winner” of the first debate among Republican presidential candidates.

If you are interested in learning more about Dr. Paul’s political philosophies, please do read through the New York Times article above, and check out this video of Dr. Paul being interviewed by Google executive Elliot Schrage.

You are right Islander. I have noticed negative votes on many comments that I think does not deserve them. It's like they go straight down the line and vote negative. Maybe not the same one here, but I think maybe someone is lurking.

Vote and give to Ron Paul's campaign!  President Paul - we need you!

Yes, I agree - that the evil lurking around this forum is giving all posts negative points for NO reason.

Hope that Mercola.com moderators are monitoring to whoever is giving all the negative points, and ousts them very soon!

I think that people have a right to thier voting opinion. If a person whats to give a thumbs up or down why should they not be allowed to do so? If they are not allowed to vote thumbs up or down then why do we have that option on these message boards? I think the moderators should allow votes to be heard otherwise why not just do away with the positive negative votes? I'm not saying I agree or disagree with this person. It is of no harm to us how they see the article.

Ron Paul represents the future of politics, a direction we MUST head in if we are to survive, become a better country again, and restore dignity to the Oval Office.  For the first time ever I have contributed to a political candidate and I will continue to send more.

If you think Ron Paul does not have a chance at winning this election than you are playing into the hands of the media and allowing them to determine who the top tier candidates are to be and ultimately decide the next president.  Congressman Ron Paul CAN win this election.  America is ready for radical change in this most quiet, honest and conservative form, Dr. Paul.

By the way, the joke in Washington is that Dr. Paul's thinness has been attributed to the fact that he does not accept free lunches!

Thank you, Dr. Mercola, for supporting such an outstanding individual!  My opinion of you just keeps getting higher and higher.  How about interviewing Dr. Paul at some point and posting the interview at mercola.com?

i can't sign off on the guy unequivocally. sorry, y'all. not all of his ideas are great imho. first of all, there is a real void in his platform where there should be an environmental agenda(a comprehensive one that involves more than brief ideas about using the market to fix it). He also expresses admiration(if you read his essays enough) for Reaganomics.  That is scary.  He is definitely a charismatic guy who has some better things to say than alot of the idiots in office, but that doesn't mean all of his scholarly ideas will work out when the rubber meets the road. Get rid of the IRS? Come on, people, it's not that simple.

I really don't like how they use the word "Anti" so much in the title.  It's such a negative word.  He's not anti-abortion, he's Pro-Life.  But, none-the-less, any press is good press when you're trying to get your name heard and Ron Paul is really gaining momentum.  I can't wait until he's our new president!

It doesn't even matter if he's pro-life, pro-choice, or pro anything else. The point is, he wants to leave those ethical lawmaking decisions up to the local communities - not try to get everyone to agree with his personal views on right and wrong at the national level. I disagree with his personal views on so many levels, and I am thrilled at the prospect of living in a nation where that is truly okay!

Three cheers for a true champion of freedom!

ChiroTom5,

The media love to put their spin on everything, and using "anti" is their way of making Mr. Paul's stance sound negative.  Nothing new for them, but sad nonetheless.
