600 Physicians, Dentists, Scientists and Environmentalists Call for an End to Fluoridation

A statement asking Congress to end water fluoridation in the United States has been released by the Fluoride Action Network (FAN). Over 600 professionals, including a Nobel Prize winner, officers in the Union that represents Environmental Protection Agency professionals, and members of the National Research Council panel on fluoride's toxicology, have signed the statement.

The report urges Congressional members to “recognize that fluoridation is outdated, has serious risks that far outweigh any minor benefits, violates sound medical ethics, and denies freedom of choice.”

It cites eight recent events that call for an urgent end to water fluoridation. Among them:

  • A 500-page review of fluoride’s toxicology by the National Research Council of the National Academies, published in 2006.
  • Evidence from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) that found 32 percent of U.S. children have dental fluorosis, which is caused by fluoride.
  • The American Dental Association’s 2006 policy change, which recommends not giving fluoridated water to infants for the first 12 months of life.
  • A Harvard University study that found a five- to seven-fold increased risk of osteosarcoma (bone cancer) among young men who were exposed to fluoride between the ages of 6 and 8.
  • The CDC’s recognition that fluoride is beneficial in reducing tooth decay when it’s applied topically, not taken systemically.

The statement calls for members of Congress to sponsor a new Congressional Hearing on Fluoridation that requires those who continue to support water fluoridation to provide scientific basis, under oath, for their continued recommendations.

According to one of the statement’s signers, Dr. Arvid Carlsson, winner of the 2000 Nobel Prize for Medicine, "Fluoridation is against all principles of modern pharmacology. It's really obsolete."

Dr. MercolaDr. Mercola's Comments:
This is truly excellent news! Slowly but surely, the truth about fluoride has been leaking out, and now it may finally have the chance to sink in and really prompt some major changes.

If you are new to the site, you’re probably still under the impression that fluoridated water is a good thing, so this news may come as a surprise. In reality, fluoride is a dangerous poison that does not help to protect your teeth when you ingest it via your drinking water. As even the CDC has admitted, fluoride may help your teeth if it’s applied topically, but taking it in systemically does not.

What it DOES do, as this much-needed statement points out, is:
On top of that, the statement reveals that federal agencies have admitted that “the industrial grade waste products used to fluoridate over 90 percent of America's drinking water supplies (fluorosilicate compounds) have never been subjected to toxicological testing or FDA safety-tested approval for human ingestion."

The fact that Americans have been drinking fluoridated water for more than 50 years has really been a giant experiment, at the expense of your health.

You can learn the underlying corruption and abuses of power that have allowed fluoride to be shamelessly promoted in the United States in Christopher Bryon’s The Fluoride Deception. The publication of this book is one of the eight recent events that’s referenced in the statement, simply because it reveals so clearly that industrial interests were behind the early promotion of fluoride.

How You Can Avoid Fluoride, and Help to Ban it in Your Water

If all goes well, this statement should make members of Congress take notice, and may prompt new regulations about fluoridated water.

Until then, you can protect yourself from fluoride by using only non-fluoride toothpaste and not receiving fluoride treatments from your dentist. To remove fluoride from your drinking water, you must use a reverse osmosis filter. Be sure that you’re filtering not only the water that you drink, but also the water you use to wash vegetables, make ice cubes, and cook with.

If you’re wondering how to keep your teeth healthy, remember that fluoride was never the answer in the first place. Eating right and avoiding processed foods (along with regular cleanings with your natural dentist) will ensure that your teeth stay healthy naturally.

Finally, if you’d like to voice your opinion about ending water fluoridation, the Fluoride Action Network has an online petition that you can sign to call for a Congressional Hearing.

Remember, every voice makes a difference, so please feel free to forward this message to all of your interested friends and family members.

Together, we have the power to prompt some real changes for the good of your health, and the health of future generations!

I'll THIRD it!!!  Although my healthy journey is but a few months old, I have long been a proponent of banning fluoride.  One of my children (now 26) has horribly discolored teeth...why?  Because I was told to give her fluoride supplements in an area that turned out to have very high natural fluoride levels.

This is great news!  However, we must realize that some of these professionals risk their careers to sign and support this proposal.  A dentist friend of mine signed this and has already reaceived a phone call and a letter from the state dental association representatives questioning his radical position and warning him that he is exposing himself to possible other actions.  He highly expects to receive a visit from OSHA soon.

I live in the small city of Springfield, Ohio and to date we have been able to fend off Fluoridation in our public water. It has always been a concern that the powers that be would get swept in by the deep pockets of the pharmaceutical giants and give in to poisoning our water with fluoride.
I hope that this message to Washington is the beginning journey that leads to safer water for all of us.  Healing Headquarters

Why only push for water?  Sodium fluoride in toothpaste is swallowed by young children. Sodium fluoride has been used as a rat poison. Various compounds of fluoride are used in water supplies and just because the compound happens to contain the fluoride molecule does not mean that the compound is safe.  The water department in my city buys hydroflourosilicic acid, which is a by-product of fertilizer manufacture, to dump into the water of this community at he dosage of 1.0 ppm. There is no good way to dispose of this highly toxic and corrosive substance, so it is sold to cities, in 55 gallon drums with poison labels on them, to be dumped into water supplies and processed by people. This should be considered a criminal act, but it is not. I have seen these drums, and I have seen the corrosion on the drums due to dripping of the compound from these drums I even have pictures of it. All forms of fluoride that do not occur in nature should be considered for extinction. Nature's fluoridated waters cannot be improved upon. And we need to find ways to dispose of toxic fluoride by-products, other than feeding them to Americans.

One word, "money."  Even as we know flouride is a toxin, but there is too, too much money to be made from selling it to those who provide water.

I have been using distilled water for years and now drink very high quality deionized water from Whole Foods which I believe is much better.  Even were the city of Arlington, Texas to eliminate flouride from our water, I would not drink it because flouride is far from being the only harmful contaminent in it.  Several years ago, I allowed a dentist to coat my previously perfect teeth with flouride and much to my surprise I started to have many cavities when there had been absolutely none before.  Apparently, my unique saliva had been protecting my teeth from all harm until the flouride coating somehow ruined the perfect ballance thus leaving me vulnerable to decay and infection.  Happily, the coating has worn off and my previous dental health has now returned (self healing of cavities included).  But this, however, only after suffering horrendous dental expenses due to my seriously misplaced trust in a young dentist who assured me the flouride coating could only help.  Never again!

I have been a proponent of non-flouridation for a very long time. My own wife went against me and insisted on flouride tablets recomended by the dentists in NY. Our 2 children (14 and 15) now show signs of flouridosis on their front teeth. Who is the idiot that supported this and why has he or she not been held accountable. There should be a moratorium on these idiotic studies. The burden of proof should be in a follow up study by someone who has no ties to the main study. If there is a proven tie, the penalty should be life in prison. These studies affect all of us. Why are there no penalties for falsely reporting something that affects our health so negatively. Make the penalty fit the crime whether it be physical or monetary!!  Our health is at stake for every study that is not supported by a follow up by a disinterested (that is read as "non-compensated by corporations") party.

There were people in teaching positions 28 years ago campaigning against Fluoride.  Of course the drug industry hadn't gotten quite so powerful yet.

The only RO that can remove all flouride and all known contamants from water is from Aqua -Thin.  Contrary to some posts on this site your dont get your minerals from your drinking water any way, you get them from your good organic food. The minerals in most water are too large and unavailable. So RO your water and add salt if you want but eat good food.
