Lack of Sunshine Causes One Million Deaths a Year

If vitamin D3 levels among populations worldwide were increased, 600,000 cases of breast and colorectal cancers could be prevented each year, according to researchers from the Moores Cancer Center at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD).

This includes nearly 150,000 cases of cancer that could be prevented in the United States alone.

The researchers estimate that 250,000 cases of colorectal cancer and 350,000 cases of breast cancer could be prevented worldwide by increasing intake of vitamin D3, particularly in countries north of the equator.

The study examines the dose-response relationship between vitamin D and cancer, and is the first to use satellite measurements of sun and cloud cover in countries where blood serum levels of vitamin D3 were also taken.

Serum vitamin D levels during the winter from 15 countries were combined, then applied to 177 countries to estimate the average serum level of a vitamin D metabolite among the population.

An inverse association between serum vitamin D and the risk of colorectal and breast cancers was found.

Protective effects began when 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels (the main indicator of vitamin D status) ranged from 24 to 32 nanograms per milliliter (ng/ml). In the United States, late winter 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels ranged from 15 to 18 ng/ml.

Previous research has suggested that raising levels to 55 ng/ml was actually optimal to prevent cancer, the researchers said.

To increase your vitamin D3 levels, the researchers recommended a combination of dietary methods, supplements and sunlight exposure of about 10 to 15 minutes a day, with at least 40 percent of your skin exposed.

Dr. Mercola''s Comments Dr. Mercola's Comments:

The dangers of sun exposure have been greatly exaggerated, and the benefits highly underestimated.  Sun exposure is not the major reason people develop skin cancer. I know many of you might be surprised by this, but this is simply not the truth, and buying into this lie will most assuredly deprive you of the vital benefits the sun can provide.

And one of the major benefits is lowering your risk of getting cancer -- the number one cause of death. As this groundbreaking study found, 600,000 cases of cancer could be prevented every year just by increasing your levels of vitamin D, and without question, the best way to obtain your vitamin D is by UVB sunlight falling on unexposed skin in doses that do not cause sunburn.

Even beyond cancer, the researchers pointed out that increasing levels of vitamin D3 could prevent diseases that claim nearly 1 million lives throughout the world each year!

That is absolutely extraordinary, and NO ONE is making a penny from this recommendation, which is one of the primary reasons why this is not being more widely promoted.

The Endless Benefits of The Sunshine Vitamin

Vitamin D, the sunshine vitamin, is different from other vitamins in that it influences your entire body -- receptors that respond to the vitamin have been found in almost every type of human cell, from your brain to your bones.

Optimizing your vitamin D levels could help you to prevent as many as 16 different types of cancer including pancreatic, lung, breast, ovarian, prostate, and colon cancers.

Further, optimal vitamin D levels are also known to positively influence the following conditions:
How to Get Enough Vitamin D (and What Level is Optimal)

Optimal vitamin D levels lie in a very small range. To be certain your levels are where they should be, have your doctor test your blood and supplement (or, preferably, get moderate sun exposure) as needed in order to maintain that level.

The correct test your doctor needs to order is 25(OH)D, also called 25-hydroxyvitamin D.

The OPTIMAL value that you’re looking for is 45-52 ng/ml (115-128 nmol/l).

Bear in mind that even though 25-hydroxyvitamin D lab values of 20-56 ng/ml (50-140 nmol/l) are considered “normal,” your vitamin D level should NEVER be below 32 ng/ml, and any levels below 20 ng/ml are considered serious deficiency states and will increase your risk of breast and prostate cancers and autoimmune diseases like multiple sclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis.

Now, how should you get your vitamin D levels into that optimum range? Ideally, from sun exposure. This is always the preferable method.

However, I realize that sometimes it just isn’t possible to get out into the sun as much as you’d like (particularly if you’re in the middle of a Chicago winter, which is the dilemma much of my staff at The Optimal Wellness Center faces!).

If you decide to supplement your diet with vitamin D, there are two crucial things to know:
  • It IS possible to overdose on oral vitamin D supplements (there’s very little risk of overdosing on vitamin D from the sun, however), so you need to have your blood levels of vitamin D measured regularly.
  • Only vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol), the type of vitamin D found naturally in foods like eggs, organ meats, animal fat, cod liver oil, and fish, is appropriate for supplementation. Do NOT use the highly inferior vitamin D2.
To find out more about the crucial importance of sunlight and vitamin D for your health, my forthcoming book Dark Deception will explore this topic in detail, and expose why the conventional wisdom on the subject, which encourages you to stay out of the sun, is dead wrong.

My new book, Dark Deception, goes into FAR more details but it will be coming out next year.

In the meantime, you can find out the vital details you need to know to keep your vitamin D levels where they need to be throughout the upcoming fall and winter seasons in my brand new Sunshine Special Report.  I decided to make this report available to you now so you don't have to be at the mercy of my publisher and wait till next year.

Folks there is still rampant confusion out there (see the post below about oral vitamin D). That is why I wrote this TWENTY PAGE Report to clear it up and give you a resource before the book is published.  I am confident the information in this report can clearly have a profound impact on your health and those of your family.  You simply need to understand how to use this wonderful FREE nutrient.

The reports I have read states that enough vitamin D at cellular level does in fact cause cancer cells to self destruct--(APOPTOSIS).

But this report as all of the others just seems to go no further that the trash can when the FDA and the AMA gets it, and then the AMA gets on TV begging for money to find a cancer cure.

OK, just for the heck of it, since it's a Friday, when I looked at the title of this post Rogway, I was wondering how certain V V readers were going to blame the "600,000" cancers per year, from lack of sun, poor diet, poor supplementation, on the 'terrorist sponsoring USA'?

Evil industrialized first world America creating acid rain to block UV rays?  Hmmmm, I wonder how they do that only over the USA though?

A Zionist global plot of mind, and vitamin D, altering, kosher contamination?   I'll pass on the dills with my sandwich today.

Trans fat deep fried fast food disallowing Vitamin D absorption?  There might be some truth to this.

Space Shuttle blast-off emissions, & the International Space Station frequency emissions, in combination with space junk, and cell phones reflecting 'good for you' sun rays?  Feel free to jump in with your answers!

No, it must be the little green men in Area 51 and Aurora spy planes?  Up que the Twilight Zone theme music...

Let's see how many negative dings I get on this, I'm going for a new all time LOW record...I'm trying to beat out Al Gore's Florida missing chads total.

Like I said uncle Russ--you do have a way with words and you put them together perfectly.

If I could put words together like you do, I would have finished my second-third-fourth and fifth novel by now instead of just thinking about it.

I am honored to be associated with you, and you are a vital asset to vital votes. Vital votes wouldn't be the same without you.

Hello everyone. I thought this could be useful. After reading this post I run to see what kind of Vit D I was taking and it was Cholecalciferol , fuiiii.

blessings.

Cholecalciferol (D3)

Ergocalciferol (D2). Note double bond at top center.

Calcitriol (1,25-dihydroxycholecalciferol). Active form. Note extra OH groups at upper right and lower left.Vitamin D is a group of fat-soluble prohormones, the two major forms of which are vitamin D2 (or ergocalciferol) and vitamin D3 (or cholecalciferol).[1] The term vitamin D also refers to metabolites and other analogues of these substances. Vitamin D3 is produced in skin exposed to sunlight, specifically ultraviolet B radiation.

Vitamin D plays an important role in the maintenance of organ systems.[2]

Vitamin D regulates the calcium and phosphorus levels in the blood by promoting their absorption from food in the intestines, and by promoting re-absorption of calcium in the kidneys.

It promotes bone formation and mineralization and is essential in the development of an intact and strong skeleton.

It inhibits parathyroid hormone secretion from the parathyroid gland.

Vitamin D affects the immune system by promoting immunosuppression, phagocytosis, and anti-tumor activity.

Vitamin D deficiency can result from inadequate intake coupled with inadequate sunlight exposure, disorders that limit its absorption, conditions that impair conversion of vitamin D into active metabolites, such as liver or kidney disorders, or, rarely, by a number of hereditary disorders.[2] Deficiency results in impaired bone mineralization, and leads to bone softening diseases, rickets in children and osteomalacia in adults, and possibly contributes to osteoporosis. Vitamin D deficiency may also be linked to many forms of cancer.

That's right Roqway!  It sooooo disgusts me how billions of dollars, decades and decades later of these supposed cancer cure searches and still NO cure for cancer.  More people than ever today are getting cancer and dying from it.  I refuse to walk for any of these cancer walks because I know the money does not go to anything worth while with these organizations.  I remember going with a friend somewhere and she had to first drop off her packet for the cancer walk out here and there they all were serving nitrate topping pizzas, sodas, and ice cream.  Give me a break! And there standing next to me was a lady telling all how she was in the middle of her chemo as she went to get her cancer causing food to eat.  I say lets use all this money to STOP giving everyone cancer in the foods that we eat, the water we drink and the air we breathe etc!!!!  Then we won't need to find a cure for cancer.  Althogh it's clear that cures have been found, THEY just don't want anyone to know about that and have done evil things to keep it from the general public including murder. THEY are making way too much money on their chemo, radiation and surgery treatments etc.  THEY don't want to the general population to find a cure.

Here comes the sun, do do do, and I say, it's alright. Thank you George Harrison.
I feel that the numbers in this study are grossly underestimated as well. Far more cancers could be prevented and treated more efficiently than what is listed. WE NEED SUNLIGHT. In moderation of course.
Calcitriol, the active form of vitamin D, is the most potent steroid hormone in the human body. Look at how little people spend outdoors today compared to a century ago and tell me that exposing your skin in the right way to Ol Sol is bad. I dare you. Make that a TRIPLE DOG DARE.

Good point phooey.

Not only did we stay in the sun more a century ago, we also wore leather bottom shoes keeping us grounded to the earth.

Staying in contact with both the sun and the earth = some pretty good health benefits. I have seen it for positive benefits many times over.

Mariane Williamson said it beautifully

"You cannot get to the light through endless analysis of the dark, you get to the light by choosing the light!"

It is about studying healthy people that we will be able to best express our potential for health and well being not through the analysis of the sick.

We have a choice, fear the dark or simply turn on the light!

Excellent statement. "We have a choice, fear the dark or simply turn to the light!" Studying healthy people will give us insight... no doubt.

Thank you for your excellent and influential way of well thought out advise.

God bless you.

My preferred supplement company, Life Extension Foundation (LEF), produces an outstanding monthly magazine in which they publish fully researched and documented articles.  Many of them echo and/or validate Dr. Mercola's views.

The September issue had an article that goes into real depth about the physiological actions and benefits of Vitamin D3, as well as the wide range of problems associated with a deficiency.  You can access it here: www.lef.org/.../sep2007_report_vitamind_01.htm

Unfortunately, the October issue isn't online yet, because in that issue, Dr. William Faloon writes an open "call-to-action" letter to President Bush stating that Vitamin D3 deficiency is directly responsible for "several hundred thousand" deaths in the US alone each year.  If this subject comes up next month, I'll provide a link to it as well.  Of course, being a supplement company, he suggests that each American supplement with 1,000 IU of Vitamin D3 each day.  The cost of which is only $19 per year.  And he says the LEF will donate 50,000 bottles of 365 x 1,000 IU capsules to the US government to provide to people who can't afford it on their own.  Pretty compelling.

I know Dr. Mercola isn't a big fan of supplementation, and in this case, far recommends exposure to sunlight over supplementation with D3.  But how about those of us who have more than exceeded our "lifetime" dose of sunlight when we were young?  Pale complected, having lived in high UV regions and having been severely sunburned several times over a large area of our bodies (before the days of sunblock) AND who have had several surgeries to remove Basal Cell Carcinoma as a result.  Supplement over sun?  Or maybe he disagrees that there is such a thing as a maximum lifetime dose?  I'm curious...

I still love the sun, but I love my skin MORE.  As a result, I take my 1,000 IU of Vitamin D3 every day - except for days I get a few minutes of sun - I now live in the inferno that is Las Vegas.

Be well!

You need to read my new book out in next May or get the condensed report mentioned above. You were NOT designed to get ORAL vitamin D.

Will it help?

Certainly, BUT it has SERIOUS potential for overdose and when you CHEAT your body by swallowing it instead of obtaining it the way God designed your body to, then you are missing out on the benefits that have been associated with taking vitamin D.

Remember that virtually ALL the science is from NATURAL produced vitamin D from sunshine on unexposed skin, NOT oral vitamin D. It is a major logical fallacy that you and experts like Falloon and other are making. Take a shortcut and you will NOT receive the benefits.

Your concern about skin aging is simply addressed by improving your skin antioxidant levels and/or wearing a protective hat.

There is a very good reason for Dr. Mercola's view of supplements. I was recently diagnosed with a severe Vit D deficiency by my doctor at the VA. She prescribed mega doses of Ergocalciferol (D2).

I didn't like the idea of taking the D2, so I went to a naturopathic doc which insisted that I did need to supplement with high doses, but gave me a script for a high quality D3 supplement.

After 2 months of taking the D2, I just had my VIt D levels retested. Now my levels are abnormally HIGH!  My Vit D (25_Hydroxy) results were 105 ng/mL. The normal range for my lab is 15.1-50.0 ng/mL

I wish that I had stayed with my original plan of sunbathing and taking cod liver oil daily.

Could it be that we've evolved to rely on sunlight not just for Vitamin D conversion, but also because it gets us out and about and exercising?  We know based on various studies (e.g. those on SAD), and more importantly, our own personal experiences that we just feel better (emotionally, physically, etc.) on sunny days and when we've been out in the sun. These mechanisms could all feasibly work together to keep us healthy: vitamin D, exercise, and emotional balance, which all themselves are cancer enemies. :-)
