Dandelion Coffee -- Who Knew?

This recipe is, to say the least, DIVINE, and that‘s probably the understatement of the year. It‘s caffeine free, very good for you and absolutely delicious!

The only thing you might have a little difficulty getting hold of is the dandelion coffee, but a good health food store should have it.

INGREDIENTS:

  • 2 teaspoons freeze-dried dandelion coffee
  • Dash hot water
  • ¼ teaspoon raw honey
  • Dash pure vanilla extract
  • ½ of a large glass of ice cubes
  • ½ glass raw milk

PREPARATION:

  1. Place freeze-dried dandelion in large mug.
  2. Add dash of hot water and stir to dissolve.
  3. Add raw honey, and mix well to dissolve.
  4. Add dash of vanilla extract and mix well.
  5. Fill large glass halfway with ice cubes.
  6. Pour raw milk over ice until glass is two-thirds full.
  7. Add dandelion coffee mixture from mug into milk glass and stir.

This is absolutely delicious! You will be addicted the second you try it (in the nicest way possible of course).

Wonderful. I heartily recommend this recipe. Enjoy!

I have been drinking dandelion coffee for years. I harvest my own from dandelion fields, dry it, roast it and then boil it. However, dandelion root should not be drunk everyday as it is a tonic herb for the liver. Herbs like nettle are nourishing and can be used everyday, however tonic herbs should be used more sparingly.

To find out more about the medicinal uses of dandelion or about tonic and nourishing herbs check out Susun Weeds website www.susunweed.com.

Also in the dandelion field I highly recommend trying dandelion pesto. You can often find dandelion leaves in grocery stores, or harvest your own in the spring or after the first frost in the fall. Then just make the pesto as you would with basil,  substituting dandelion leaves. A dandelion leaf a day really does keep the doctor away as it is high in a number of nutrients including calcium, vitamin c, and potassium.

To learn more about dandelion and other fun ways to use herbs trying www.learningherbs.com. This website was created by a family in Washington and there is lots of free information as well as a really fun board game for learning medicinal plants called Wildcraft.

I have not had dandelion coffee before but I know dandelion is one of the greens that is higher in iron as well as a number of other vitamins and minerals. Something I've been experimenting with lately is fermenting some of these tonics to reduce the tannins and improve iron absorption all the more. I've had good luck with nettle tea.

This tastes fantastic and if I love it I'm sure others will too! I'm a former coffee addict who drank only freshly ground coffee from specialty roasted beans - yes, a coffee snob to be sure. My local health food store owner recommended "Dandy Blend" coffee but I was very skeptical about how it would taste. I was pleasantly surprised to find I really enjoy it and it doesn't make me feel bad physically as coffee did.

I made this iced coffee with Rice Milk and Stevita and it was delicious so I can imagine how much better it would be with real milk and honey. Give it a try!

I found a source that will ship Symington's Instant Dandelion Coffee to the U.S. (from England):  www.yourhealthfoodstore.co.uk/.../p2437_lanes_symingtons_instant_dandelion_coffee.html

Yes, "msmasters", I too have been witnessing the same problem with this and the last few videos. The voice is out of sink with the lip movements. It certainly detracts from the wonderful information being given and makes it not as enjoyable to watch. Is there something that can be done about this? Thanks.

Sounds great, I'll have to try it.

I drink a tea made by the same company that makes "Throte Coat" that is called "PMS tea". It has roasted carob in it among other things and it has that slightly bitter coffee appeal. It is especially wonderful with a splash of raw cream. I love it for the week or so each month that I get to drink it. Thankfully I never got the caffine habit, so I'm not too picky about the flavor being exactly like coffee.

To Mark Fletcher or who else might be knowing:  In Rajas cup, what ingredient are you concerned about?  I was thinking of getting some.  I like it.

I LOVE Symmington‘s Instant Dandelion Coffee from England, but you can‘t order it here in the US. It has less ingredients than Dandy Blend, just Roasted Dandelion Root and a bit of lactose. It‘s great and really fills the need for bitter herbs that coffee satisfies. PS. If you want straight roasted dandelion root, you can get it from Mountain Rose Herbal, and then just grind it in the coffee grinder. It would go great with a little stevia and vanilla thrown in. Or you could pull your own dande‘s in the fall and roast the roots, but its quite the project.

Symingtons has more than a little lactose in it, it has LOTS of lactose in it.  That's why it tastes so sweet and yummy.  Real dandelion coffee/tea has a strong bitter taste to it.

There is an excellent Coffe Blend called Teecum. It has several blends ie Mocha Java etc. It needs to be filtered and tastes as close to coffee as I have ever tasted. Enjoy!

Has anyone else been having trouble with any of Luci's videos (this one and others) having a delay? For the last several that I've watched her lips and her words aren't really sinking up. Ideas?

Thank you Luci for everything! I feel like I'm learning to navigate around in this enlightening new world along side you. :) Domo

Just Google Dandy Blend and order it on-line.  Whole Foods makes it too hard for them to sell it to them.  The shipping fee is high so order lots or go in with someone else.  Susie

Dandyblend is a delicious instant dandelion beverage...consists of extracts of roasted roots of chicory, dandelion, and beets, etc...tastes like coffee, and sort of sweet too.  It is gluten free...and less expensive than other coffee substitutes...tastes better too! Great hot or cold.  Found in health food stores (I rep. this line to that market), or you can find stores who sell it at www.dandyblend.com

This sounds fantastic.  I used to drink Raja's Cup but got concerned about one of its ingredients.

Anyone know if you can Dandelion Coffee from Whole Foods?

I get a dandelion coffee called "Dandy Blend".  It also contains chicory and a few other ingredients, I think.  It is caffeine free and gluten free.  I've never looked for it at Whole Foods b/c we have it available at our co-op but they may have it or agree to carry it if you ask them.
