13 Tips to Actually Enjoy Exercising

A lot of people complain about not having enough time to stay in shape. Are you one of them? Does exercise always get bumped to the bottom of your list of things to do? The problem may have nothing to do with time – it might just be that you hate exercise...

If that’s the case, some of these tips may be just what you need to change your attitude, and in return, exercise might just change your whole life. For the full list of all 13 tips, see the Lifehack link below, but here are a few good ones:

  • Tune Your Challenge Level – Don’t start out by running until you’re winded and dry-heaving into a ditch, and don’t just mess around in the gym without doing anything strenuous at all. Instead, make it your goal to set a workout routine that is challenging, but not overwhelming. Challenge is key to enjoyment.

  • Set Goals – Don‘t just set weight-loss or muscle gain goals, set fitness goals. Set goals to beat your past records in distance, push-ups, or chin-ups you can do, weight you can lift, or degree you can stretch. Make it a game where you strive to beat your previous high-score.

  • Music – This shouldn’t come as a surprise, but music can enhance a workout, making it far more enjoyable and less like “work.”

  • Short Workouts – Don’t have time or enthusiasm to last an hour? Just go for twenty or thirty minutes. Shorter, but higher-intensity workouts can be better than longer ones and you can become more focused as a result.

  • Make Exercise Your Stress Relief – Many swear by using the gym to relieve stress. Exercising can be cathartic and release negative feelings if you get used to using it that way. Then instead of avoiding the gym because of a stressful day, it will be your reason to go.

Figuring out what type of exercise you actually enjoy doing is the best way to get yourself into a regular exercise routine – the last thing anyone wants to add to an already stressful day is yet another dreaded, no-fun activity.

And, the great news is it doesn’t have to take up a lot of your time!

In fact, one of the most effective forms of exercise is short bursts of high-level exertion, followed by periods of rest. This is also the best form of exercise to strengthen and protect your heart.

The main problems with long-duration, aerobic exercise is that:

  1. It can actually encourage your body to store fat under certain circumstances
  2. And, if you aren’t careful and use other methods of training, you can actually shrink your heart and lungs, rather than boosting their performance

One of my favorite sources for practical exercise assistance is Ryan Lee. I began supplementing my own cardio workouts with his four-minute exercise program a while back, with impressive results. The only caution I would give you is that you must start out slow. Although some of his exercises seem deceptively easy, don’t make the mistake I did and do the entire four minutes with a significant weight. Start with a very small weight and only do it for one minute.

This could save you much pain and muscle soreness. Progress slowly and in no time you will be up to the full four minutes, shaving hours a week from your workout regimen and getting healthier than when you were doing aerobics for five hours a week.

The trend in exercise is indeed leaning toward developing regimens where you use burst-type workouts, which will give you anaerobic challenges that can stimulate your body to higher levels of health, in shorter amounts of time.

As you experiment to find the exercise that you enjoy doing on a regular basis, keep in mind these three variables:

  1. Length of time
  2. Frequency
  3. Intensity

To make sure the intensity is high enough (without going overboard for your current level of fitness), exercise to the point that it’s difficult – but not impossible – to talk to someone next to you.

As someone who has attended and worked hard, three times a week in a gymn... for the last seven years, I would say that the social interaction is of equally great benefit to many there, as well as the huge physical/mental impovements attainable.
Once you have seen and experienced the benefits ...say after 4-6 weeks, you will never want to 'sit and rot' again....BUT, you do have to put in the effort, as with all in life, for the return.
Of course, there are just as many excuses for not doing enough exercise....as there are for not eating correctly, or being fat....but as someone who is in better shape than most half my age, halted avascular necrosis in its tracks and depression .....I know from personal experience, the huge benefits.
....If you have "no time to exercise"...then presumambly none for watching any T.V. either?!:)

I agree with everyone who prefers non-gym activities integrated into a daily routine, as part of a healthy lifestyle overall.

Walking somewhere I need to go, or taking my bike is the only way I can manage to "make" myself exercise... A gym-like setting seems too artificial.  Running around with your kids, gardening, taking care of the house - all that is exercise too, isn't it?

I love music, and so for me, I use a portable satellite radio receiver.  Love it, love it, love it.

I have a few reservations about those satellite radio receivers. We have a  Sirius antenna on our roof which plugs into the main unit which plugs into our stereo receiver. Our neighbor can turn on his stereo receiver and listen to whatever we're listening to. Since everything is in-line, why is it broadcasting and how strong is the signal and how far does it go?
What happens when you carry the unit on your body? Does anyone know?

Bridestein,
Your neighbor can only listen to the satellite if he has a satellite receiver himself.
I carry the unit on my body, I have not noticed any adverse reactions.
I believe the signal is quite strong; afterall, they broadcast to most of the 50 states.  It doesn't work in AK and HI.
I love my satellite radio.  I will never switch.  I don't even own an I-Pod!

Samurai - my neighbor doesn't have a satellite receiver - all he has is a stereo receiver which he tunes to an FM frequency in the 80s or 90's. He can only listen to whatever we're listening to for as long as we're listening to it.
That's why I have reservations.

Interesting article and good advice, especially if you live close to a gym.
But find what interests you.

If you find an exercise that you can lose yourself and time in...that's priceless.  I did back in 1980...and am still an addict - RACQUETBALL!  Ever try it?  It's AWESOME!!!  All ages can play and have fun...only takes two people and you can also play with 3 or 4.  Yesterday, I  wore a pedometer and during an average I took 1000 steps per game.  AMAZING workout and you don't think about the time - your just having fun and playing.

Give Racquetball a try - it's a blast and a lifetime sport.

Take Care of You...Lucy

I don't have a car, so walk the mile and a half to and from work each day. It's wonderful - catching the morning rays when the sun is at that lovely, watery, fresh stage; the world shimmering with dew, the birds just finishing their morning chorus, the air crisp and fresh. It's lovely.

Then, after a day in the office, walking home in the golden setting rays... it's especially nice at this time of year, you can smell the evening fires and smell casseroles cooking in the houses. The air has that lovely cool feeling to it again, the birds are all settling down for the night, there might even be a faint mist setting in.

It's so good for the soul, I love it. Even if I had a car I'd still walk.

And if it's one of those days, I'll have my MP3 player going with some nice upbeat music on to sing along to. I spend my life around music though, interviewing bands, reviewing gigs and albums, with my friends who are all in bands. So it's nice to just listen to the sounds of 'silence' every now and then.
