Do You Know the Dangerous Chemicals in Common Baby Products?

The Environmental Working Group is again sharing shocking news. After surveying 3,300 parents, comparing the baby products they use to lists of chemicals known to cause allergies, hormone disruption, damage to the nervous system, and cancer, the group found that children are exposed to 27 chemical ingredients on a daily basis that have never been assessed for safety. Not by the industry, nor by the government.

Dr. Rebecca Sutton, the environmental scientist who conducted the study, points out that:

    1. 2 bromo, 2 nitropropane, and 3-DIOL create allergies and skin irritations, and in certain products can break down to form new cancer causing agents

    2. Desitin diaper cream contains sodium borate, which can collect in your child’s brain and liver, causing detrimental health effects

    3. Sunscreen with oxybenzone can trigger allergies, and disrupts your delicate hormone system

Surprisingly, 89 percent of products labeled “Recommended by doctor” are actually some of your worst offenders, containing what Dr. Sutton considers dangerous chemicals.

Manufacturers have responded with the following statement from the Cosmetic, Toiletry and Fragrance Association:

"Companies utilize a complex, multi-tiered scientific approach to extensively evaluate the safety of individual ingredients and finished products. These processes can take many months to several years to complete and utilize the expertise of leading chemists, toxicologists, biologists, dermatologists and experts from other scientific disciplines and medical specialty areas."

Dr. MercolaDr. Mercola's Comments:

The Environmental Working Group (EWG) is a nonprofit public-interest research group known for making connections between chemical exposure and adverse health conditions.

Thankfully, this Washington-based organization has made it easy to calculate your risk of exposure to potentially harmful substances through the personal care products you use for yourself and your baby. Since 2004, their "Skin Deep" study has been assigning health-risk ratings to each of about 7,500 personal-care products.

Their rating system offers a means of quantifying the answer to a controversial question: Just what are you doing to yourself when you slather stuff on your body? And, what risks are you exposing your children to?

Please don't shrug this issue off.

It is important to recognize that whatever you spread on your skin has a very real chance of being absorbed into your blood stream, with the potential to cause serious damage in your body.

The EWG’s "Skin Deep" report will tell you how many ingredients the products collectively contain. The calculator will rate the aggregate health threat those ingredients might pose to you.

Each product is ranked according to its ingredients' potential to:

  • Cause cancer
  • Trigger allergic reactions
  • Interfere with your endocrine (hormonal) system
  • Impair reproduction or damage a developing fetus

Please. Do shield your children from as many of these dangerous chemicals as possible. It’s their future health – both physical and mental -- at stake.

To keep yourself and your family safe:

  • Only use natural cleaning products in your home. Most health food stores will have these available or you can search for them online

  • Switch over to natural brands of toiletries, including children’s personal care products, and your own shampoos, toothpastes, antiperspirants, and cosmetics. You can usually find a good variety at either your local health food store, or by searching online.

Unfortunately, it’s not as easy as simply reading a label anymore, because not all products marked “natural” or “organic” are in fact natural or organic, so make sure you check them out on the Skin Deep site.

There is reason to be concerned about the numerous toxic chemicals you are exposed to on a daily basis. I strongly urge you to read Our Toxic World: A Wake Up Call. The author, Dr. Doris Rapp, is an early mentor of mine. She is one great lady and does a thorough job of uncovering the many ways you are exposed to toxic chemicals, and how they take a toll on your health, contributing to the many chronic diseases you see today.

A great resource for finding out whether personal care products are safe is the website www.safecosmetics.org .  They have a data-base that you can access that will help you look up the safety ratings of most cosmetics and personal care items. I have found it invaluable as a resource.

Thanks for that great link, Pepper23.  I will pass it on to my friends and family.

This is kind of on a tangent, but I highly recommend Ecco Bella cosmetics (no, I don't work for them!)  They are at many health food stores and a little less money than the others.  I think the price is worth knowing you're safe.  The ingredients are mostly plant waxes, and they do not test on animals.

Just because a company says that something is safe, does not mean that it is in the way it is used by the company.  They study the ingredients as single entities, not in the combinations found in the compounds they put on the market.  And what is their definition of safe?  As long as it does not kill anybody.

I am so glad I switched stores for my home and personal care products! I have three children under the age of 4, and the first thing I heard about when I started learning about all the toxic chemicals we are exposing ourselves and our families to was that there is formaldehyde in some popular brands of baby shampoo. Formaldehyde! Yuk! I keep learning more and more about the danger and I believe that as folks like us on Dr. Mercola‘s site are educating ourselves and others, we will see some real changes in the way the big companies are manufacturing and marketing their products. The world is waking up!

A very good skin products company that I don't see mentioned by anyone is Aubrey Organics (www.aubrey-organics.com). Dr. M sells some of their suncare products in his store. I have used several of their products and they are excellent. No chemicals, only "Aubrey's preservative" (vitamins and grape seed extract). They are good quality, and not too expensive. My mother had used some of the fancier brands of face cremes, then I got her an Aubrey creme and she has used nothing else since.

I'm a mom of a boy with really dry skin who has been using lotions with organic essential oils for his 3 years so I was really upset to read New England Journal of Medicine:  Lavender and Tea Tee Oils Linked to Breast Growth in Boys.  National Institutes of Health conducted experiments which report that, "tests showed both oils may boost estrogen and inihibit androgens".  Of course it's nothing like the above mentioned chemicals, but I was surprised by these findings and thought I'd share.  They were found on About.com

There is a product called ARBONNE which sells Baby products, cosmetics, vitamins, etc. that are all natural.  They talk about all the ingredients that are put in baby products, cosmetics and other things that we should not put in our bodies.  Go to their web page or talk to one of their consultants and you can find out that they advise clients of this problem since their products are all natural.  I was surprised  about all the stuff that is allowed to be put in the products that we use daily.

It took an ARBONNE consultant to make me aware. P.S. Their products are great without all that bad stuff.

Who uses Desitin enough for it to get into baby's body in high enough levels to be toxic? When my kids were little I used Desitin sparingly. I usually used petroleum jelly. My kids just never had many problems with diaper rash. They would get it occasionally, but not all the time. I never used Desitin, petroleum jelly, or any other product daily on my kids. I used regular soap on baby at bath time (I couldn't afford baby soaps, detergents, or shampoos). I just used mild soaps on my kids.

I think this is another case where moderation is the key. Anything you put on the skin can be absorbed (including the city tap water you bathe in!) as it is our largest organ, but we must use common sense. I wash with a commercial soap, at times, but I rinse almost immediately after washing with it. Ditto for shampoo. I use petroleum jelly on my lips in the winter when they get too dry. I don't wear colognes, use facial cleansers, or other "personal" products other than a deodorant. I do use lotion on my hands when they get dry in winter, but not on a regular basis (daily).
