Doctors Are Clueless About Medication for Kids

children, kids, medication, drugs, medicineInformation on how to prescribe medications to children is scarce, and doctors often rely on the flawed assumption that children are simply smaller versions of adults when doing so.

In reality, drugs act much differently in children, yet few studies have been conducted to determine their effectiveness, safety and proper dosages.

Federal regulators have enticed or forced pharmaceutical companies to conduct studies on more than 200 drugs geared for children, but more than two-thirds of the medications given to children remain untested. Among those that were tested, it was found that:
  • One-fifth of drugs that work in adults are ineffective in children
  • One-fifth of the drugs were being prescribed at the wrong dosage
  • One-third of the drugs caused unexpected side effects, some of which were potentially fatal
Other alarming factors discovered were that children process drugs more quickly than adults do, and because children are still developing, drugs could stunt physical growth or impair emotional and cognitive development.

Researchers have identified categories of drugs that they say should be a priority for testing. These include drugs to treat cancers, infections, asthma, high blood pressure and hyperactivity, among others.

Hurdles still remain, however. Drug companies are often reluctant to study pediatric drugs because they represent only a small fraction of the market. Further, the drugs must be evaluated in four separate age groups, which makes analyzing data more difficult.

Parents are also wary about letting their children participate in studies for fear that they will be used as guinea pigs.

"They don‘t want their child to be thought of as a guinea pig or a rat in a study. What I try to explain is that if they are receiving a medication that hasn‘t been studied, then they are essentially participating in an experiment anyway," said Robert M. Ward, director of the pediatric pharmacology program at the University of Utah.

Dr. MercolaDr. Mercola's Comments:
Children have long been given “off-label” medications that have never been proven “safe” for their tiny, developing bodies. Some estimates say that as many as 90 percent of babies in neonatal intensive care units are prescribed such drugs, at the expense of three times more side effects.

It’s worth noting that the primary reason why drugmakers have not invested part of their multi-billion-dollar research and development budgets on pediatric drugs is because they represent too small a portion of the market share.

In other words, there is not enough money to be made.

But make no mistake.

Just because a drug has been studied for children does not make it safe. Even drugs that are meant for kids can have horrifying side effects like suicidal tendencies and blindness.

A classic example of the dangers surrounding medications for kids came just recently with children’s over-the-counter cold medicines. These drugs were over prescribed  to well-intentioned parents looking to soothe their children, despite the fact that there was very little evidence that they worked. In fact, there was growing evidence that many of these drugs were fraught with side effects.

How Many Drugs Are Your Kids Taking?

The sad reality is that kids in the United States are being vastly overmedicated, both with drugs meant for them and those that have yet to be tested. Consider these sobering facts:
Please realize that nearly all of the problems for which kids are given drugs can be resolved using natural methods. For example, one of the most commonly misunderstood reasons why parents rush their children to a doctor is because they have a fever.

Well, a fever is actually a good thing.

High fevers are especially good as they are far better than any immunization at building an authentic, life-long immune response. When you suppress these fevers with Tylenol or another medication, you can cause far more harm than good. (I advise avoiding most all of the anti-fever medications unless your child is absolutely miserable or the fever is over 104 degrees F.) A tepid bath can be a soothing and effective alternative also.

Behavioral problems can also be treated without drugs. Kids with ADHD, for instance, often improve greatly by taking these simple steps:
  • Eliminate grains and sugars from their diet
  • Replace soft drinks, fruit juices and pasteurized milk with pure water
  • Increase their omega-3 fats by giving them krill oil
I would strongly encourage you to do the research before giving your child any medication, and only do so if there is truly no other option (you may need to seek out the opinion of a doctor who is knowledgeable about natural medicine).

If you are still skeptical about the toxic effects drugs have on kids, I urge you to invest some time to watch The Drugging of Our Children, a documentary by Gary Null. It is a powerful testimony to the urgent need for change.

Doctors don't even think about or know about or consider natural alternatives to healing before writing a prescription.  They don't even discuss the side-effects of prescriptions or consider any side-effects a person experiences as a result of the prescription.  Most doctors are clueless on a lot more than prescription drugs for children. They are also clueless on the chemical composition of vaccines and recommending low-fat foods to children.

I would add to that parents play a role in this too.  They just leave it up to the Doc instead of understanding what they put in the child.

I took my daughter to a GP doctor last week for a strep test because her tonsils were very red and inflamed and she was in alot of pain. The test was negative (tonsilitis) but the doctor said he could give her antibotics if I wanted them which I refused of course.

I'm not a fan of antibotics but don't feel confidant enough to "treat" something like strep on my own. I did start spraying her throat with CS immediately but that probably takes more than a few hours to knock something like that out. I've been looking for a good naturopatic doctor for support but don't have any in my immediate area.

I think some doctors, too, though have gotten to the breaking point.  With all the medical advertisements on tv, more and more hypochondriacs walk into the clinics and demand medication.  When our one year old had a cold, we took her in and explained to the nurse and the doctor that we didnt' want antibiotics unless they were absolutely necessary - as the doc was finishing up, he was still speaking to us like he assumed we were going to demand a prescription.  I know I wouldn't want to be in their shoes..........

I like to call it "Living a Healthy Lifestyle" (Dr. Mercola's Health and diet plan). This way you don't have to worry about taking your kids to the doctor's.

This is a great article. My children are 11 and 9. If I had known 1/2 the things when they were young as I do now, they would have never received antibiotics. Thank God they weren't sick very often. I just pray I can continue to learn more so I can make the best decisions for myself and my family.

Pharmacists are the experts on drugs and don't get the respect they deserve. I was interested to note that some MDs have no more education than is in the curriculum of my Chiropractic college. I sometimes wonder "just what are MDs expert at?".

I know this is really off topic but here I go... My wife is Russian and her Green Card was denied.  We tried to reopen the case but after 5 months of waiting they refused to reopen her case.  The reason I am writing this here is that there are a lot of really smart open-minded people on this website and I know someone out there at the very least has some good suggestions.  However I am already making my game plan on how to live a healthy life in Russia.  Does anyone know specifics about how healthy their food is?  I have drilled my wife on this but she is not familiar with that vast conspiracy of poisons our governments and corporations throw at us!

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated! Thank you all Love and Peace...

The best way to protect your children is to keep them off ANY type of medication . Instead you can maintain their health by following the guidelines of good NUTRITION promulgated by Dr. Mercola. But how do you keep kids off soda and candy and cookies and junk food ? Invent ways to make veggies and fruits more palatable to kids. Try various combinations of ingredients to produce delicious dishes based on raw veggies. I have been experimenting and have come up with gourmet style casseroles that include broccoli. cauliflour, garlic, onions, celery, carrots, organic apple cider vinegar, ginger, organic raisins and lime juice plus condiments such as cayenne, turmeric and olive oil (avoid canola). Toss in some Alaska wild salmon and organic sushi rice and you have a meal to die for, your kids will go for, over any baked goods, twinkies or pizza.

Corbinmom, we take uncontaminated, high vitamin Blue Ice cod liver oil (does what Dr. M rec's krill oil for), and here's how I get it in my 9, 6, 3, and soon, 9month olds.  "How do you want your Viking Vitamins today?  In yogurt, chased with OJ, or straight?"  (Every Viking had a vat of fermenting cod livers outside his home, producing the wonderful, vitamin-rich oils)  They can suggest other methods, too, if they feel like making a smoothie or smoothie pop from it that day, for example.  But there's no choice about *whether* they get it.  They get their CLO every day.

My grandmother (71 years old) said that in her NC public school, they were given CLO every morning, every child, at school, no exceptions.
