The 10 Most Insane Medical Practices in History

If you’ve ever questioned whether your doctor really knows what he or she is talking about, these shocking medical practices of years gone by will give you some fodder for your suspicions.

Although they may sound unbelievable, these medically approved remedies were at one time all the rage.

1. Children’s soothing syrups. Used for teething and nursing infants, and also to “cure colic, cramps, dysentery, canker sores and pain,” these syrups were “soothing” because they contained morphine, chloroform, codeine, heroin, opium and cannabis.

2. Mercury. This toxic metal that can cause heart and lung problems, psychotic reactions, delirium, tremors, chest pain and more, was used for centuries to treat everything from cuts to constipation.

3. Heroin. If you had a cough in the late 19th century, a dose of heroin would fix it. This now illegal, extremely addictive drug was originally developed and sold by Bayer … as a cough suppressant.

4. Lobotomies. During the first half of the 20th century, lobotomies were used to destroy the prefrontal cortex of the frontal lobe of your brain. (This is the area of your brain that controls thinking, personality traits and decision-making.) They were used for years to treat everything from schizophrenia to depression, anxiety and moodiness -- until it was discovered that it often caused mental retardation.

5. Hard-core diet remedies. In the 1950s and ‘60s, women took diet pills that were made of amphetamines to lose weight.

Curious about the other five insane medical practices? The link below has the full list.

Dr. MercolaDr. Mercola's Comments:
Looking back a couple of centuries, and in some cases just a few decades, it’s easy to laugh at some of the seriously misguided medical practices that occurred.

But history, of course, has a funny way of repeating itself, and that is really no laughing matter.

In fact, I could point out a laundry list of medical practices in full swing today that, in my opinion, could easily be added to a list like the one above:
  • Prescribing antibiotics for colds (about 41 million antibiotic prescriptions are written for cold sufferers each year, even though antibiotics have no effect on the viruses that cause colds)
Despite making many advancements in hygiene and sanitation over the last couple of centuries, and now spending over $2 trillion every year for health care, the United States has acquired a health care system that, in many respects, is a dismal failure for those it seeks to serve.

Fortunately, you do have some options here. You do NOT have to rely on the conventional medical model.

You CAN Take Control of Your Health.

You can take matters into your own hands by making lifestyle choices that will keep you from needing medical interventions in the first place.

As the foundation of conventional medicine keeps coming apart at the seams, you just can't afford to let anyone else besides you take responsibility for your health care decisions. Reading this and many other articles means you're searching for answers, certainly a good thing that means better health for you in the long run.

Both my parents are College Schooled Nurses and I cannot get them to stop believing every word of the Medical Community.  I am 21 years old and know what is going on 1000 times better than they do.  It is really depressing watching your reasonably intelligent families get suckered in because they are trusting people.  My God what does this mean for most of America?

You are not alone my friend. I have a sister who is a R.N, her husband a Chemist and a brother in-law that is an orthopedic back surgeon.  They all think I’m a little off my rocker too.

Just living a healthy lifestyle, people will notice.

One might add to this list:

- the use of forceps in childbirth

- elective c-sections

- chemotherapy (the theory being which will it kill faster, the cancer or the person)

- bleeding patients

- surgeries to remove the uvula or the septum to cure snoring

Frankly, I look back at Dr. McCoy in Star Trek IV, and I sympathize with his reaction to "cutting and sewing people like garments.  I'm a doctor, Jim, not a tailor!"

cydwatts - sorry you think that forceps are wrong.  They most likely saved the life of my son as he was completely blue when they got him out of me.  I was about 30 seconds away from having to have an emergency c-section so thank God for amazing forceps that got my son out alive and without a dangerous c-section.

Very sad article.  Unfortunately, there are many insane medical practices performed on millions of gullible patients each day in this country.  I wonder if they will live long enough to see the treatment provided to them added to this list.

I believe in Lobotomies.  I think they should be done on men who molest and rape little children.

Unfortunately, I went through Chemo and radiation.....That was before I knew truth about Doctors and Drug Companies. They also told me my heart was only working at 46% on the left side and it would never come back. That was 2003..1 later year my heart was 100% They (Doctors) also said I would need medicine for high blood pressure. My blood pressure is 120/80. What did I do???

1. GOD - By his (JESUS CHRIST) stripes I'm Healed, Medicine, Herbs, Vitamins, yes and even Organic

foods will not heal you. Don't get me wrong, there is wisdom in eating right! but it will only give you

the elements necessary to allow your body to heal itself.

2. Stay away from main stream Doctors. There’re ignorant of any topic concerning nutrition. If they can't

   poison it, cut it out, or simply hide the symptoms there’s lost. and;

3. Find someone strong enough to tell the truth...Thank You!!! Doctor Mercola, he is willing to stand

against the corrupt powers of the AMA and Prescription Drug Companies.

Well some of the old time remedies could be fun.  Geritol at 25% alcohol was very popular during prohibition.  Alas, George Washington died from "blood letting'--it cured his nose bleed.  If you used store bought flour you chanced to have tear gas in your biscuits as they poured it into the top of those big grain tanks out on the lonesome prairie...cheaper than rat poison and twice as quick.  I never found out what hokey-pokey was (probably cyanide).  A local hatchery tossed all the rejected baby chicks in a barrel and poured it in.  They sure chipped for a few minutes.  And mercurichrome....imagine putting this on a open wound introducing it direct into your tissue.  At least in those days, they were just ignorant but today....it is planned homicide.

Hokey Pokey is a New Zealand sweet made from baking soda (bicarbonate of soda), golden syrup, and sugar. Very sweet but makes a lovely treat! ;-)

More about lobotomies in CCHR's "Psychiatry: An Industry of Death" Museum in LA: Here's a video about it: www.cchr.org/.../museum_video_tour.html

I think Methadone (and its Nazi connections) should be in the list as it's more adductive than heroin, yet touted as a 'cure' for heroin addiction!

Re: Giving a cervical cancer vaccine to boys

To the extent that I agree that this is a bad idea is the same extent to which I think that vaccine's in general may not be good for us, however I'm not sold either way.

However, assuming that this particular vaccine is 'safe' to give to girl, it really should also be given to boys.

The vaccine is against four strains of the STD that causes cervical cancer.  While the disease can be transmitted from girl to girl most of the transmission is from male to female or female to male.  Males are carriers too, most of the time they are asymptomatic.  And, more importantly, unless it is the strains of HPV that cause genital warts, there is no way to know if a boy has HPV, there is no test.  This is an STD that can spread even with the use of condoms.  :/

It is a good idea to give boys a vaccine for this is it protects against HPV, the disease that causes some cervical cancer, anal cancer, and throat cancer.  (www.newscientist.com/.../dn11819-oral-sex-can-cause-throat-cancer.html)  I'm assuming this means that the boys then cannot be carriers and transmitters.  It also protects the boys against throat and anal cancer, and in rare cases penile cancer.

The vaccine protects against genital warts in addition to cervical cancer.  But, just two of the strains that cause warts, and two of the strains that cause cervical cancer.

So, it isn't stupid to give boys this vaccine, assuming that as a vaccine is actually is safe.

What is in this vaccine that would make it safe for girls or boys?

You sound wishy washy, exactly like a pharma plant.

Leah, Just to help you along in your walk... It's always GODS will to heal! Problem is, GODS will doesn't always come to pass. When CHRIST died, he died for all the sin of the whole world. It's GODS will that everyone come to CHRIST and enter into heaven.  But not everyone will, they need to receive CHRIST, it's there choice.  As far as healing, CHRIST redeemed us from the curse of the law. Galatians 3:13. We now have scriptures to stand on for healing. If your a born again christian, you already have your healing, were not asking for GOD to heal us. we received it when CHRIST was raised from the cross. It's the same with salvation...It was completed at the cross. Christ is not coming back down to the cross every time someone is saved, his part is complete. Now we need do our part and receive. When searching for answers, you need to look to the the bible and find GODS will. You need to know GODS will. If you ask not knowing, you ask in doubt and unbelief and  you will not receive. That's why  we have the scriptures, to know our father. In times of emergencies and you don't know what to do. Look to John chapter 14, 15, & 16. This is JESUS last minute instructions to his disciples. His first statment "Let not your heart be troubled." Wish I had more time & space...If I can help you don't hesitate to ask... "HAWK"
