Does Tainted Milk Cause Crohn's Disease?

A bacterium known to cause illness in cattle may also cause Crohn's disease in humans. Crohn's disease causes chronic intestinal inflammation, leading to pain, bleeding and diarrhea.

A bacterium called Mycobacterium paratuberculosis prevents white blood cells from killing E. coli bacteria. E. coli is known to be present in increased numbers within Crohn’s disease infected tissue.

It is believed that the Mycobacteria make their way into the body’s system via cows’ milk and other dairy products.

The video above is an excerpt from the outstanding DVD The Whole Truth About Milk, which was created by by David Getoff, CTN, CCN, FAAIM, and features Organic Pastures Dairy owner Mark McAfee, where he explains the vital differences between pasteurized and raw milk.

Dr. MercolaDr. Mercola's Comments:

Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis are collectively known as inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), which are characterized by symptoms such as:

  • Frequent diarrhea
  • Abdominal cramps and severe pain
  • Rectal bleeding
  • Weight loss and fatigue
  • Nausea and fever

Other extra-intestinal symptoms include disorders of your eyes, liver, gallbladder, muscles and joints, kidneys and skin. In some cases, fistulas can form aberrant passages from your bowels to your anus, vagina or skin surface.

Most conventional treatments focus on relieving your symptoms with anti-inflammatory drugs, or surgically removing the affected part of your intestines.

The Dairy Connection

This is not the first study indicating pasteurized milk as one of the culprits in Crohn’s disease. Previous research found that the mycobacterium avium paratuberculosis (MAP) was present in about 92 percent of patients with Crohn’s disease, compared to 26 percent of patients in a control group.

MAP is present in about two percent of commercial pasteurized milk. So, not only does pasteurization kill the beneficial bacteria available in milk, but it leaves a potentially harmful organism alive and well. Making matters worse, the conventional recommendation to drink milk that has been pasteurized at even higher temperatures is far from helpful.

What nearly everyone fails to appreciate about pasteurized milk is that although the pathogenic (disease causing) bacteria are killed during pasteurization so they can’t multiply, they are NOT removed from the milk. The dead bacteria are STILL IN THE MILK.

If the bacteria are there, they can serve as a stimulus to your immune system and cause all sorts of autoimmune diseases, Crohn’s disease being only one example.

Instead, RAW milk from healthy grass-fed cows is actually one of the more profound healing agents you can turn to when confronted with inflammatory bowel disease. Rather than cause it, raw milk can send your IBD into remission.  This is because if cows are raised properly and only fed grass, not immunized, given access to plenty of fresh air and sunshine, and not given antibiotics or harmful vaccines that impair their immune system, then they simply do not get sick or become colonized with these pathogenic bacteria in the first place. Thus there is no need to pasteurize their milk.

What many also fail to appreciate is that pasteurization is NON discriminate in its ability to kill bacteria. Pasteurization kills the GOOD bacteria in the milk that actually makes you healthy and can reverse diseases like Crohn’s.

If this information interests you I would STRONGLY encourage you to purchase the full Raw Milk video (an excerpt of which is provided above) from the Price Pottinger Foundation. It is one of the best videos I have seen this year, and really helped my understanding of all the benefits of raw milk.

I knew raw milk was good, but had no idea just how much better it was, until I saw this video.

Milk and milk products have been the food staple of mankind since the beginning of recorded history. They are truly the one food source that has allowed us to become civilized and to develop societies as we know them today. But now, in 2007, milk has a bad name. Is it the milk itself, or is it the way that it is being processed and delivered in this corporate farming world we now live in? Are the problems we see a result of pasteurizing and homogenizing, which are relatively new developments in the history of milk?

Unfortunately, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, in another misguided and unhealthy move, recently moved to ban some raw-milk cheese. And in California, one of the only states in the United States that legally sells raw milk, raw milk must now -- for the first time -- conform to strict limits for coliform bacteria that could actually make the milk less healthy, according to a new state law, AB1735.

For more information about the current Consumer Revolt against AB1735 and legal action to defend your access to raw milk, you can contact Organic Pastures at www.organicpastures.com or (559) 846-9732.

Antibiotics Can Also Cause Inflammatory Bowel Diseases

When antibiotics are taken for various purposes your protective, healthy bacteria are eliminated and yeast growth goes unchecked. The resulting effects can be very similar to those of IBD.

Furthermore, when fungi become systemic from gut inflammation and the overuse of antibiotics, your whole body -- again, your eyes, liver, gallbladder, muscles and joints, kidneys, and skin -- becomes involved in inflammatory bowel disease.

Some scientists have directly implicated yeast and fungal toxins (mycotoxins) as the cause of Crohn’s disease. Former World Health Organization expert Dr. A.V. Costantini found that people with Crohn’s often have aflatoxin, a mycotoxin made by Aspergillus molds, in their blood. The disease activity in patients with Crohn’s was lower while they followed a yeast-free diet, specifically avoiding baker’s and brewer’s yeasts.

How to Treat Crohn’s Disease Naturally

In addition to converting from pasteurized- to grass-fed raw milk, avoiding dangerous grains and sugar is another important factor that can help you reverse inflammatory bowel diseases such as Crohn’s.

There is fairly strong Paleolithic evidence that many thousands of years ago most humans did not consume many grains. They were hunter-gatherers who subsisted mostly on vegetables and meats. Ten thousand years is a mere blip in a biological sense for humans -- over 99 percent of our genetic make-up was in place well before we ever started consuming grains.

When considered from this perspective alone, it is not too surprising that grains can cause a wide array of health issues. As a contemporary human you have not suddenly evolved the mechanisms to deal with carbohydrates from starch- and sugar-rich foods into your diet.

Taking healthy doses of probiotics should also be high on your list. Fermented foods, such as natto, for example, are loaded with beneficial, healthy bacteria. They give your body similar benefits as consuming a whole bottle of a probiotic supplement, but at a fraction of the cost.

One of your best and least expensive ways to achieve this would be to obtain raw milk and convert it to kefir, which is very easy to make. All you have to do is put one half packet of kefir start granules in a quart of raw milk at room temperature and leave it out over night. By the time you wake up in the morning you will likely have kefir. If it hasn’t obtained the consistency of yogurt you might want to set it out a bit longer and then store it in the fridge.

Additionally, if you suffer with Crohn’s disease or IBS, coconut oil would be an extremely beneficial addition to your diet. The anti-inflammatory and healing effects of coconut oil have been shown to play a role in soothing inflammation and healing injury in the digestive tract. Coconut oil also has antimicrobial properties that promote intestinal health by killing troublesome microorganisms that may cause chronic inflammation.

Fish oil is another absolutely essential element of preventing and controlling inflammatory bowel disease.

It has also been my experience that there is nearly ALWAYS some type of unresolved emotional trauma that occurred before the age of six and is buried deep in the subconscious.  This can be something devastating like sexual abuse, but far more commonly it is related to some parental interaction that was relatively minor, but to the child, it was absolutely devastating.  Until this is cleared up it is VERY difficult to obtain improvement.

There are a number of different approaches that can be used but energy psychology is probably the most universally and consistently effective strategy to use. My particular favorite is EFT.

I am 59 and have always had intestine problems. In Feb of 2007 my Wellness doctor suggested to try raw milk ,I ordered some from California { i live in New Jersey } it cost a lot of money but I immediatly had my problems resolved .This is after 50 years of suffering. We now obtain Raw milk products and consume them daily.I would suggest that if you want to try something make kiefer .The object is to have fermented food in your diet. If you want you can leave the raw milk out on the counter and it will seperate into kurds and whey ,the milk doesnt go bad.You can use the whey to make pickles.

There are closer places than California to buy raw milk. I know of a store in Hockessin, DE that you can use as a go-between from an Amish farmer. It's at the natural food store. You order the milk from the store manager, he places the order with the Amishman, and you pick it up the following week and pay the manager. Been doing it for years. It's legal. They've tried stopping him, but he doesn't get paid for it, so they can't do anything to him. Glad to hear someone's still kind in this world.

I'm also in NJ, we get raw milk from a Menonite farm near Kutztown, PA, called Jersey Hollow Farm.  We found them through the realmilk.com website.  They also have raw yogurt, cheese, cream, etc, all quite inexpensive (way cheaper than pasteurized milk from the supermarket!).  Good luck with your continued healing!

There is some potential that a mycobacterium will trigger Crohn's, however, it is not the actual cause of this disease and Dr. Mercola is doing good work in exposing grains as contributing to diseases.  The cause of Crohn's is the bacterium Klebsiella pneumoniae, and if someone is treating this particular bug by using antibiotics they should also greatly restrict grains--all starches especially micronized (flour) and soluble (potatoes and corn), because this germ will rapidly develop resistive strains, if given the opportunity.

Klebsiella LOVES the massive colloid formed during digestion of flour products:  Seventh Day Adventists have four times the Klebsiella that the average SAD diet produces, on average.  This bacterium also ferments lactose, so milk products are not especially good when wishing to reduce this bug that is found in every human digestive tract.

There is a disease continuum that starts with chronic Reiters, then chronic Ulcerative Colitis, Ankylosing Spondylitis, and Crohn's--all caused by this enteric bacterium in combination with intestinal damage that is usually germ-induced, but often giardiasis, candidiasis, and even intestinal bypass can cause the lesions that will lead to these diseases, in a person who is genetically susceptible.

This was ALSO discovered by an Australian doctor:  Alan Ebringer working at Kings College, London.

Regards to everyone who supports and contributes to this site, and Dr. Mercola, of course,

John

John, I have been a Seventh Day Adventist for over 20 years. I am a vegetarian, and am healthier, on this diet, than most people I know. I have never heard of Klebsiella. Can you please tell me where you got your information?

Of all the SDAs, that I've met, and that's thousands, I don't know anyone with this disease. One of the lief-changing areas that the SDA Church focuses on is healthy lifestyles, and healthy foods. Studies show that SDAs live 7-10 years longer than most people, and are healthier, longer.

Humm, this is very interesting, because I do have Crohn's disease and have had it for 20 years now, I am taking a drug called remicade to keep me alive and well, but they just not discovered the long usuage of such a drug has caused hepititus and I now am battling a sick liver, so I can either die from the Crohns'  or cirrohus of the liver...so if I had know this...or even tempted to have tried something different when growing up, maybe I wouldn't have this, however...I have some doubts, because out of 6 siblings...I'm the only one with the disease. Go figure. This is good to know tho.

I have a friend that has crohns and has had 2 feet of his intestines removed. He has had fistulas come and go.

The docs he goes to put him on every new antibiotic that comes down the pike from big pharma. He seems ok for a couple of weeks then comes the fever and fistula rebirth. He also did the remicade treatment and thats is an immunosuppressant. Why would any body think that suppressing the immune system would be helpfull? Anyway he claims to eat a good diet, but I catch him drinking milk, eating yeast rolls and all kinds off bread, sodas and he can't figure why he can't shake the crohns. He has tied probiotics but he is fooling himself that one or two pills a day is going to change things. most people want to be cured of what ails them but do not want to do or eliminate what it is to complete the task.

Another good reason to seek raw dairy from grass-fed cows.  When cows are fed on unnatural diets of grain, soy, and other even worse junk foods, the resulting diary and meats are much more likely to be contaminated with pathogens and harmful chemicals.  This is a no-brainer : )

Whether an organic farm or not.......(although I will concede, most organic farms are wayyy better than conventional and or course factory farms) but since the 50's when the dairy council convinced us that milk was needed for strong bones and health we have been broad-sided by false information.

When ever somebody switches from toxic pasteurized milk to raw of course they are going to see improvements in their health......there is no longer the toxicity of the pasteurization going into their body.......BUT REMOVE MILK COMPLETELY FROM YOUR LIFE AND SEE DRAMATIC IMPROVEMENT ONCE AGAIN.  Milk is very mucous forming....(oh but don't they make Mucinex?)and the culprit behind ear infections, congestion, colds, crohn's disease to list just a few.

Milk is high in fat and toxins ride in fat.The main protein in human milk, lactalbumin has a molecular weight of 14K, perfectly suited for humans......cow's milk's base protein has a molecular weight of 233K and because it is so durable and sticky, it is used as a binder in paint and as the world's strongest wood glue!!!  Casein is difficult for humans to properly break down, creating a lot of acidic residue when metabolized.......causing many serious problems.

Not to mention that dairy cows have their babies ripped from them at birth and instead of producing 10-25 lbs of milk as they would naturally for their calf they are forced to produce 90-110 lbs of milk...........THAT'S HORRIBLE AND I CALL THIS ABUSE OF A BEAUTIFUL ANIMAL.  WE ARE SUCH HUMAN IDIOTS!  And I think it's preposterous of us to think raping an animal is okay.  Mother cows give birth, start lactating and are raped all over again within days of giving birth.

Cows normally live 25 years in nature...in our screwed up way, they have 4-5yrs!

OH - BTW 80-90% OF ALL DOCTOR'S OFFICE VISITS ARE MILK RELATED...HHHHMMMM GOOOD.

Read World Peace Diet by Will Tuttle PhD and learn something that will help your life, our planet and our world.  Because...it's time

Kathie, raw and fermented dairy have long been a part of many healthy cultures around the world.  These people have not suffered from use of raw dairy, and in fact many of these groups are known for longevity, such as the people of the Caucasus Mountains.

Raw dairy may not be ideal for everyone, but that should be an individual decision based on how you feel with or without raw dairy.  Many people see much benefit from raw diary.  Some people do not.  To say that everyone should give up dairy does not make sense in light of the historical context.

Probably the greatest benefits of raw milk are the probiotic microbes and live enzymes that promote digestive health for most people.  Since the digestive system is the foundation of our health and immunity, foods that promote digestive health are very valuable.  Pasteurized milk, on the other hand, does not promote digestive health and should be avoided.

If pasteurization is supposed to kill all unwanted organisms in the milk where does the Mycobacterium paratuberculosis come from?

The reason the TB like germ stays in the cow's milk is that the milk is not heated long enough.

To kill all germs in cow's milk would require heat long enough to make the taste of cow's milk taste like a burnt cooked food.
