One of the Most Ridiculous Studies on Weight Loss Ever Published

laproscopic surgery, lapband, weight loss surgery, gastric banding, diabetes surgery, diabetes, diabeticA truly ludicrous study purports to show that a weight-loss surgery called adjustable gastric banding works better than conventional medical treatment for Type 2 diabetes in the obese.

Type 2 diabetes is usually brought on by obesity, and patients can often rid themselves of the disease entirely by losing about 10 percent of their body weight.

Adjustable gastric banding consists of looping a band around the top of the stomach to cinch it into a small pouch. 25 to 30 percent of the more than 200,000 weight-loss operations performed in the United States last year used gastric banding.

Of course, weight-loss surgeries can result in black-outs, malnutrition, infection, bowel and gallbladder problems, and an increased risk of death, but these facts are largely missing from reporting on the study.

The study’s lead author, Dr. John Dixon, says he believes that, “[D]iabetes surgery will become common within the next few years.” The reasons for his position might become a little clearer when you realize that Dr. Dixon has received research grants and speakers’ fees from Allergan Health, the company that makes the gastric bands. The company also paid for the study in question.

Dr. Mercola Dr. Mercola's Comments:

Type 2 diabetes -- the fifth-leading cause of death by disease in the United States -- kills about 73,000 people each year. And, the prevalence of diabetes is growing by about 8 percent per year.

However, type 2 diabetes is NOT an incurable disease, as most would have you believe – including the New York Times reporter above – and surgery is an absolutely inappropriate treatment option as it in no way shape or form addresses the cause of the disease, which is insulin and leptin resistance.

“Diabetes Surgery” – The Next Dangerous Fad?

Unfortunately, the quick-fix fantasy is a solid staple in many people’s minds, and since 2005, the FDA has given approvals to three American hospitals to test gastric banding for children as young as 13!

These studies went forward even though the mortality rate for adult bariatric patients currently stands at 2 percent within the first month after surgery, according to the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality.

Already, many adult patients feel so miserable about their health, they'll resort to harmful, painful "cures" like gastric bypass to "escape" those extra pounds without even thinking about or trying anything else first. What's to stop kids from wanting the same thing?

The procedure limits the amount of food that can be consumed, which is why some are saying it could help the growing obesity and diabetes epidemics, both among adults and children. But these surgeries are loaded with complications, including:

My Personal Experience With Diabetes

I should know because not only have I helped thousands of people completely control their type diabetes, I have also done it for myself.  In the late 90’s, before I became aware of Nutritional Typing I tried the Eat Right for Your Blood Type program.  Well, while this clearly works for some, it was an absolute disaster for me.

I very quickly developed type 2 diabetes on this program as my fasting blood sugar rose over 125.  Of course, I immediately realized something was wrong and started my normal exercise program along with eliminating the grains that his program advised, and my blood sugars have been well controlled ever since.

I have also helped my dad control his diabetes, although it was far more complex as he had high iron levels that damaged his pancreas and actually caused a combination of type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Nevertheless, he is doing great with only a few units of insulin a week.

I also have numerous unsolicited testimonials on my site describing the remarkable results you can achieve by treating your diabetes with the simple guidelines described below. The latest one reads:

“I was recently diagnosed as a new diabetic and decided to treat it "the Dr. Mercola way" and rejected all the different medications offered to me.  I read your articles on how to do so, and in 4 months my A1C went from 12.2 down to 7.4 - am still working on my healthy new lifestyle.

Unfortunately I used Splenda for my sweet tooth and I also have thrown it away.  I was having panic attacks, diarrhea, and fainting episodes.  I was even afraid to drive myself to work.   Am doing much better now, wish I had taken your reports on Splenda more seriously.

And thank you from the bottom of my heart, Dr. Mercola, for your common sense approach to curing diabetes.   If only more physicians could see it your way.

Even an endocrinologist wanted me to use Actos or Avandia - no thank you - or insulin! I prefer the natural way!   Dr. Mercola, you are such a blessing to all of us who have lost faith in modern medicine.  I love you!!!!    You gave me HOPE!

I have been an RN for 25 years, and have seen too much.   I think you should start wellness clinics allover the United States....and retrain our physicians!   Of course, some treatments are necessary in life-threatening situations - but nobody has to have Splenda, or take diabetic meds without really being coached and encouraged to try to reverse diabetes.

It's such a simple concept, yet so not embraced by physicians.  My doctor even told me that losing weight is impossible and that I would eventually need 2 or 3 drugs.   I lost 16 pounds and have lowered not only my glucose but also my lipids.   I will prevail, thanks to your website!!!!”

Why Perform Surgery For a Curable Disease?

Not only is type 2 diabetes completely preventable, it is almost always curable using dietary and lifestyle modifications. Medications, supplements and surgery are simply not the answer for diabetes. First of all, type 2 diabetes is not a disease of blood sugar, but a disease of insulin, and perhaps even more importantly, leptin signaling, and can be controlled by recovering your insulin and leptin sensitivities.

How?

By eliminating or dramatically reducing grains, sugars and trans fats in your diet, getting enough healthy omega-3’s, exercising, and sleeping well. Best of all, no one has died yet from resorting to these lifestyle modifications as far as I know.

Any meal or snack high in grain- and sugar carbohydrates typically generates a rapid rise in blood glucose. To compensate for this your pancreas secretes the hormone insulin into your bloodstream, which lowers your blood sugar. Insulin is essentially a storage hormone that helps you store the excess calories from carbohydrates in the form of fat in case of famine.

Over time, your body will become “sensitized” to insulin and require more and more of it to get the job done. Eventually, you can become insulin resistant and then become diabetic.

Adding to the problem, when your insulin levels to rise due to an excess of carbohydrates, they send your body a hormonal message essentially telling it to store fat while holding on to the fat that is already there. So not only will excess carbohydrates make you fat, they will make you stay fat.

Once your blood sugar normalizes you can have some of these foods but your body will always tell you if you overdid it by having your fasting blood sugar rise.

Exercise is also a vital player when it comes to treating diabetes because it increases the sensitivity of your insulin receptors, causing the insulin already present to work much more effectively, so your body doesn't need to produce as much.

The other key player in diabetes is the hormone leptin. Leptin is the way that your fat stores speak to your brain to let your brain know how much energy is available and, most importantly, what to do with it.

The only known way to reestablish proper leptin and insulin signaling is through your diet

Your Call to Action

Normalizing your weight and treating diabetes go hand-in-hand. Fortunately, following these simple guidelines will help you achieve both.

  • Severely limit or eliminate sugar and grains in your diet. Following my nutritional type diet will help you do this without much fuss. While nearly all type 2 diabetics need to swap out their grains for other foods, some people will benefit from using protein for the substitution, while others will benefit from using more vegetable-only carbohydrates. Therefore, along with reducing grains and sugars, determining your nutritional type will give you some insight into what foods you should use to replace the grains and sugars.
  • Exercise regularly
  • Avoid trans fats
  • Get plenty of omega-3 fats from fish oil or krill oil
  • Get enough high-quality sleep every night
  • Treat the emotional issues that brought your health to this low point by learning a valuable, effective and non-invasive tool like the Emotional Freedom Technique

1) I have seen a number of people have gastric bypass or banding surgeries that eventually put a lot of weight back on.  The "smart" ones find that things like ice cream goes down and through pretty fast.  HFCS also goes through real fast.

2) I have seen a few very successful surgeries when people truly learned to eat small frequent balanced meals.  What is sad is that if they had eaten ordinary sized balanced meals before surgery, they never would have needed the surgery.

Unfortunately, no one taught them how to properly eat balanced.  No one showed them how to eat balanced and overcome their sugar cravings.  They too often were shown the food pyramid, told to eat low fat, and use artificial sweeteners.  A diet sure to create potential surgical candidates for hungry surgeons.

Reactive expensive protocols typically have higher infection rates, bad side effects, up to and including early mortality.

Clearly there is a reason why so many people are obese.  If you have not watched Super Size Me, I encourage you to rent this DVD! Food Manufacturing companies and Restaurant Chains have decided to put chemicals in our food that stimulate appetite, cause weight gain and screw up the endocrine system.  It increases their revenue and our fat.  They have even made our children fat.  Shame on them!!!

Dr. Simeon's was (sadly has passed) the italian doctor who treated the stars in years gone by for obesity.  He wrote a manuscript for doctors that is available online.  This protocol is safe, effective and Kevin T. calls it the WEIGHT LOSS CURE.  Here is an ebook link:  8011730.wlconline.hop.clickbank.net

I have tested it myself and have personal contact with about another hundred who have done the protocol.  It works and the weight stays off, becasue it addresses the CAUSE.  (Imagine that, no white knuckling the rest of your life to stay at a healthy weight!)

Let me boldly defend those whom are obese ... THE OBESE ARE NOT WEAK OF CHARACTER, WITHOUT SELF CONTROL, LAZY.  THE OBESE HAVE BEEN LIED TO, TRICKED, MANIPULATED, TAKEN ADVANTAGE OF, BY THE 'INDUSTRY.'  I gently encourage everyone reading this to check out the Dr. Simeon's protocol.  If nothing else, you will learn something new!  Blessings to everyone, everywhere.

I gained 60 lbs with my first pregnancy and have struggled to lose it with various diet and excercise plans.  Lately, I have also been diagnosed with low thyroid and one of the symptoms is excess weight or inability to lose weigh. The best that I have found is Dr. Simons protocol outlined in Kevin T. book the weigh loss cure.  You don't need to buy the book. A google search of Dr. Simons protocol should get you all the information for free or the yahoo group health.groups.yahoo.com/.../HcgDieters

can get you started.  It does take some time to educate yourself and read the protocol and committment to stay on the protocol, but it has been the only thing that has worked for me.

Foxtroter I agree with everything you said, as typical. At one time I weighed 279.5 lbs, now it's a new me, no surgery needed. One trick, the biggest weightloss secret in all of Hollywood...for 3 weeks I ate just organic meat and veggies and eggs, no starchy veggies such as corn (for fattening cows and pigs anyway), potatoes, etc...no breads, grains, or fruits (because of the sugar)...I got a series of colonics one a week for three weeks...the results: after week one I did not lose anything...by the time the next two weeks came I had lost 20lbs!!! Try it, it works!

-It is good that you are bringing awareness to vital issues either twisted or ignored altogether by those having the control and a seared conscience. They probably consider you as a problematic nuissance. I've learned that the best way to avoid and reverse the conditions we are faced is to want to change and with the proper motives and attitude, your attempts will be in vain leaving you in a worse condition otherwise. Question stands what will you do with what you have learned here? To better yourself go and tell others proclaim what you now hold to be evident. Do not hide yourself from others try this and see how your health will return unto you speedily! (Isaiah 58). What are we to do with truths we hold to be evident? What do you do with the lamp after you light it? A city on a hill...? Let your light so shine before men... why? I seen mentioned in the archives some of the writings of Ellen White I encourage all who hear to look into her writings and judge for yourselves concerning these things. In our family there have been many cases where the sufferings were unwarranted and deaths avoidable. I do not want to hear similar stories. We have a work to be done a total reform is being demanded. It is inevitable that these things exist but how much of it can be avoided if what we know others get that same chance. What then is required of us now that we know? How much will be required of us in the end if we hide ourselves from those around us? Will we be counted as one for or against the Truth?_______-Chantilly.

My neice is 14 and weighs 3 times my weight. It breaks my heart, diabetes and poor eating habits run in her family. Her mother has had tremendous trauma, from childhood abuse, to losing a baby to watching my brother commit suicide right in front of her. She eats poorly, and has taught her 2 children the same poor eating habits. I struggle with giving advice, even though after gaining 50 pounds during pregnancy and losing it through learning how to eat healthy and exercise, I still never came close to the weight problem they have struggled with for as long as I have known them, and they let me know that loud and clear. So I hope to lead by example... attraction rather than promotion. My sister-in-law has been scheduled for surgery. It scares me on many levels. It blows my mind how much guff I take for refusing to give my 16 month old soda, candy and other junk food like McDonalds. One would think I'm poisoning him, yet the obesity epidemic continues, and I've watched the toll it takes both physically and emotionally. And our society is geared towards the quick fix.... which we still haven't learned is not the answer. Quick fixes do not work. Surgery seems like a drastic quick fix that can have such negative consequences, that far surpass the positive.

It looks like the emotional aspect has to be dealt with EFT would be very helpful.  They would need to have a EFT practitioner to get to the bottom of those deep issues.  There other mind energy methods out there too.  Good luck

Masonsmama, it sounds like you've gone through some of what I have. I haven't completely eliminated the soda, candy, and junk food from my kids' diets, but I do make sure that they are only occasional treats, not staples. You would think that I had told people that I feed my children rat poison as an alternative to sweets. How mean it is of me to not fill them with this junk! They're obviously deprived!

People in my extended family seem to equate love with the number of calories they pass on. My mom would almost take offense if you refused to let her feed you, whether you were hungry or not. The most difficult thing for me to teach everyone was not to give my kids huge amounts of sweets every time they saw them, especially on holidays. I would minimize what my kids got only to have someone else load them down with a pound or more of junk. Then I was the bad guy for limiting how much they ate. My mom finally caught on and now gives the kids $5 each instead of candy. If they ask to spend it at McDonald's, at least it's a one-time deal.

I know friends and  family who have had gastric bypass sugery. 5 people total. My family member 3 years ago had major problems as a result of hospital procedure error. He almost died. The staple gun supposedly misfired resulting in destroying his stomach. After several months of treatment he was released. He is now alive and functioning with stomach problems still. He will probably always have food issues. He did lose the weight of a whole person!

Another one I knew died as a result of a blood clot 3 months after surgery.

Another was a doctor who stated she was very pleased with the outcome and would do it again because it saved her life.

And the other 2 are married and are very pleased about all the weight loss and increased energy they have now!

I must add all these people were over 40 years old at the time of surgery.

What would I do? I would probably go for it if I was that obese. (100lbs or more)overweight. All of these people were. I still think to myself... at what point in time do you say I need help! Go and talk to someone. Help yourself. DO SOMETHING!! Don't just keep gaining weight and expect someone to help you.

You have to help yourself. Whatever it takes.

I believe when it's your time to go, it's your time to go and nothing changes that.

I hope in writing this comment it will help people make decisions they can live with and accept challenges that come to them in this life.

It says that diet and exercise did not work, I wonder what type of "diet" they had them on.  I am sure it was not matched to their nutritional type.

You can try dieting all you want.  You can try life style changes, too.  But if the ROOT of the problem is low thyroid, it won't matter what you try, the weight will not come off.  Those of us who live in the midwest live in the goiter belt, which means we don't get enough iodine to feed the thyroid, which is essential to keeping your weight down.
In addition, people who are overweight are highly toxic and usually filled with fungus.  This could explain why Patty D did so well.  She eliminated the foods that feed the fungus. and was able to detox better.

By the way, my 15 year old son has battled his weight most of his life.  The root we found last fall was from being overdosed on vaccinations when he was 5 years old for the Kindergarten shots. Too many vaccinations paralyze the thymus gland which regulates the other glands like the thyroid and adrenals.  The thymus also keeps guard to keep out fungus, viruses, and bacteria.  If the thymus has been shot down, the body has an open door to these threats.
Also, the vaccinations alter the cells at the base of the cell--the mitochondria level, and we are in the process of reversing the damage done, to restore the cells, and hopefully the weight will come off.
We are seeing progress.  For the first time in 10 years, he has energy, and is processing and thinking better.
