Holistic Treatment for Candida Infection

yeast infection, holistic, natural treatmentYeast infections can be painful, even agonizing. But instant relief from a yeast infection is not currently possible; Candida albicans is a stubborn, hearty fungi that is difficult to remove. Most over-the-counter and prescription treatments take days.

However, there are options capable of delivering relief much more quickly. The best holistic treatment for a yeast infection, commonly known as the "12-hour yeast infection treatment," has repeatedly proven the safest, quickest, and most effective treatment available.

Another popular holistic treatment for yeast infection is dietary modification, which can rid your body of a yeast infection in approximately two weeks. Strict dietary modification results in changes to your body that cause Candida albicans to die off. The lack of food, pH changes, and other factors are what ultimately destroy the yeast infection.

Dr. Mercola''s Comments Dr. Mercola's Comments:

Many may not realize that chronic yeast infections were what actually stimulated my passion in natural medicine. I read Dr. William Crook’s book, The Yeast Connection, in the mid '80s and eventually deployed some of his recommendations in my practice -- with quite extraordinary results from some seriously diseased patients.

The results spoke for themselves so I set out on a 15-year journey of exploring natural healing strategies that has lead me to where I am today. Dr. Crook passed nearly six years ago but he was really one of my primary initial role models.

For anyone who is struggling with yeast problems, I highly recommend you review www.yeastconnection.com. It is based on Dr. Crook’s  pioneering work, and the site is loaded with the latest insights on how Candida yeast causes problems in your body, and how to alleviate it.

He taught that an overgrowth of Candida albicans, a type of yeast, can cause a variety of chronic health problems in men and women, not the least of which are yeast infections.

Keep in mind, though, that not all yeast is bad. In fact, Candida albicans normally exists on your skin, in your digestive tract and, for women, in your vagina. In your intestines, the good bacteria should, theoretically, keep the yeast and bad bacteria under control and in a healthy balance. This complex system is largely responsible for protecting your body from outside offenders.

However, many people’s gut bacteria -- all 100 trillion strong -- are not in the correct balance. Using antibiotics, taking birth control pills, eating a lot of sugar and grains -- all of these things disrupt the balance of bacteria in your gut, which allows Candida cells to rapidly develop, and overwhelm, the good bacteria.

What Happens When Your Body Has Too Much Yeast?

Two things. First, the lining of your intestines weakens, which allows allergens and toxins that don’t normally leave your intestines into your bloodstream. Next, you develop a craving for sugars and carbohydrates to try to feed the unnaturally large amount of yeast in your intestine.

This is a double-edged sword because the more sugar and grains you eat, the more the yeast grows out of control. Eventually, this will further weaken your intestinal lining and your immune system.

This imbalance in intestinal flora, sometimes called dysbiosis, can lead to:
In fact, there are 79 different toxins released by the metabolism and die-off of Candida. This is why people with yeast overgrowth often feel so lousy; the Candida toxins are regularly entering their bloodstream. Two of these toxins, alcohol and acetaldehyde (the breakdown product of alcohol that causes hangovers), are in such high amounts in people with chronic yeast problems that you may actually end up feeling “drunk.”

Acetaldehyde also reacts with the neurotransmitter dopamine, which is why people with yeast overgrowth often experience mental and emotional disturbances such as anxiety, depression, poor concentration, and feeling spaced-out.

Ditch the Creams and Pills: Here’s How to Cure a Yeast Infection

Both the “12-hour cure” and the two-week dietary modification mentioned in the article above are based on holistic principles that actually address the underlying reasons why Candida is multiplying so quickly in your body. This is something, by the way, that over-the-counter and prescription drugs miss entirely.

Dr. Crook formulated a treatment for yeast overgrowth and the many symptoms that accompany Candidiasis, and it is truly effective. The highlights of the approach include:

   1. The Right Diet and Exercise

A diet rich in meats, chicken, eggs, seeds and nuts, vegetables, and healthy oils (free range and organic) -- while avoiding sugars and carbohydrate-rich foods -- will restrict the amount of fuel the yeast in your intestine has available to it. I would add to this to make your diet in tune with your nutritional type.

Once you’ve started on the diet, exercising will begin to rebalance the levels of neurotransmitters in your brain and improve your mood.

One of the elements of diet that does seem counter intuitive is the absolute restriction of even fruits when one is seeking to eliminate yeast, as even the tiniest amounts of sugar seem to worsen this condition.

   2. Getting Plenty of Good Bacteria

You will want to increase your probiotic (good bacteria) intake with a high-quality probiotic supplement or by eating cultured and fermented foods, such as natto. These contain the good bacteria that keep your vagina and gastrointestinal tract healthy and will ultimately replace the Candida.

   3. Avoiding Exposure to Chemicals

Paints, household cleaners, perfumes and scents may cause allergic reactions, and chemical sensitivities are very common in people with yeast overgrowth.

   4. Addressing Emotional and Psychological Issues

Food cravings, especially those for sweets, often are exacerbated by emotional dependencies. Tools like the Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) can help you to overcome unhealthy food cravings and other emotional hurdles.

When You Need Relief NOW …

The above solutions are incredibly important for avoiding recurring yeast infections and other yeast-related health problems, so DO make sure to take them to heart. However, they work over time and will not provide the immediate relief that women with yeast infections need.

So, to relieve the pain and itching that often accompanies yeast infections, you can try:

1. Inserting one Boric acid powder capsule into your vagina morning and evening for three to seven days for an acute infection, and 14 to 30 days for a chronic infection. I have not seen Boric acid capsules widely available in health stores or pharmacies but women can make their own by buying a bottle of Boric acid powder and gelatin capsules (a capsule-making machine makes the process go faster).

Studies show the effectiveness of Boric acid is very high especially in women with chronic resistant yeast infections -- one study with 100 women showed a 98 percent success rate with this condition. If you find that the Boric acid irritates your external genitalia you can protect the tissue with vitamin E oil (preferred).

2. Insert a garlic clove into your vagina in the morning and an acidophilus capsule in the evening for three to seven days.

3. Prepare a retention douche with bentonite clay, Pau D’ Arco tea, yogurt, tea tree oil and goldenseal and douche two times a day for seven to 10 days.

4. Soak a tampon with diluted tea tree oil and keep it in your vagina overnight.

If you make the proper lifestyle changes that I’ve listed above, your body will be able to conquer Candidas albicans. However, because yeast overgrowth can be extremely complex, I generally recommend finding a health care practitioner who is knowledgeable about the holistic treatment of yeast to help oversee your recovery.

While I agree with most of the recommendations, I have to put my 2 cents worth in here.  If you have Candida albicans overgrowth DO NOT AVOID real lacto-fermented foods.  I'm talking about living foods such as kefir and kombucha.  Candida albicans is even in the air you breath.  You absolutely cannot eliminate it from your body.  Candida is normally a round bud that causes no harm.  As you feed sugar/starch it grows crowding out not only the good bacteria in your colon, but crowding out itself.  When there isn't enough food for the Candida, it morphs from the nice round harmless bud into a pointy stick.  In this state, it can penetrate the bowel wall and get into the blood stream and thus to the rest of the body.  (leaky gut syndrome).  This overgrowth also occurs in the vagina and any warm, moist tissue such as skin folds.  It also migrates into the small intestine in this form.  It is this overgrowth and form of Candida which causes illness.  There is no magic bullet to permanently control Candida, but eliminating all sugars/grains/potatoes etc will go far.  Another thing that will speed it is ingestion of lacto-fermented foods like kefir, raw sauerkraut and other lacto-fermented vegetables and Kombucha tea.  Yes, these ferments contain yeasts BUT the yeasts and bacteria in these things are actually able to displace Candida from the bowel wall and "plug" the holes.  The bacteria and yeasts in LIVE ferments are extremely beneficial to the body.  You want a quick cure for a vaginal yeast infection?  Insert real live kefir grains into the vagina.   If you want more information on how ferments actually resolve Candidiasis, go here:

The article is good, but, missing a few VERY important items. First and foremost. If your blood PH isn't base ( neutral ) the fungus will KEEP coming back no matter WHAT you use. I personally experienced the horror of systemic fungal infections while being on immuno-suppressants for Lupus. When my PH is neutral I am on top of the world physically, mentally and spiritually. The only and most affordable way to do this correctly I found is buying Dr. Robert Young's book. The PH miracle. Go to amazon.com type in the name and it will bring him up. Buy the book and do what he says...extactly. You simply can't go wrong. He is a Dr. of Microbiology and looks at the way cells work while in an acid environment....very good read!

Patty,

Thanks for the great article. I can support all Patty has written as I've been using the kefir grains from Dom's website for 6+ months now and love them. I also got the kombucha starter from Patty and make tea with that. When can we expect Part 2 of the article Patty?

I appreciate your article and comment regarding lacto-fermented items.  Also, what is kombucha.  I have recently found organic raw drinks with kombucha in them.  They are supposed to be very good for you but I was concerned about having fermentation. Thank you and any further info. would be great.

No-one has talked about the posssible causes of candida - why are so many people getting it?

I suffered from candida for years, on and off, without knowing it. Bloating, flatulence, nausea, unable to eat many foods. I eventually saw a naturopath, who  put me on a very restrictive, sugar-free diet plus a variety of medications -the whole process was very expensive.

It did improve, but  came back as soon as I ate any rich food, at Christmas, for example.  I finally saw a homeopath who gave me a zinc test (takes about 2-3 minutes) and told me I was severely lacking in zinc. If you don't have enough zinc you don't produce enough hydrochloric acid, which you need to digest your food ( hence the fermentation).  If you don't have enough hydrochloric acid, you can't absorb zinc. Catch 22!

This was overcome by taking both for about a month, until my system was more in balance, then just continuing on with the zinc. (Our soils here in Australia are very lacking in zinc).I can now eat anything I like, and have not had candida for about 10 years, so I feel I tackled the cause, rather than the symptoms..

I hope this helps someone.

HI Julieanne,

I did the zinc test myself and found it tasted like water which means I'm deficient in zinc.  I have very low HCL.

How much zinc / HCL did you take ?   And what form ?

Thanks,

Suzy

Do not use Tea tree oil, because it only kills the bacteria on the surface and drives the rest deeper into the body. Always heal this from the inside to the outside, not in reverse.

I had systemic candida for years before I contacted a naturopath who quickly diagnosed my problem. Unfortunately, I had an extremely stubborn case and it took years to get rid of. Staying away from carbs totally  finally rid me of it. But I know my diet will have to be more strict re carbs as a long term measure.

I had read somewhere that vaginal infections, jock itch, athlete's foot are probably symptomatic of a deeper candida invasion, so if one has recurring infections  one should take more drastic and long term measures by way of permanent dietary changes.

it is not candida overgrowth it is mercury build up in your body from silver filings which contain 50% of mercury;chelate mercury from your body and you can eat sugar everyday with no problems;wondered why mercola does not mention this;this is common knowledge;diet does not address the cause of the candida it merely masks its symptoms ; chelate chelate chelate and of course remove the nasty silver filings

For a free recipe on how to get rid of yeast overgrowth, which I've shared with customers at the health food store where I work, go here:

www.squidoo.com/foodcravings

I've seen people lose 90 pounds, completely eliminate painful "geographic tongue" (the tongue looks like a map, hence the name), etc.

I mention a product called PB-8 for the probiotic, but Dr. Mercola's probiotic would be a good one to use in its place.

The best to you.

PB 8 is pretty good. But if you want the heavy hitters of the probiotic world, I'd go straight to Renew Life. They have several options called FloraSmart that range from 6 billion to 50 billion organisms per caplet/capsule. The shelf stable versions have a special veggie coating which slow releases the bacteria through the GI. You can also suck on them for a soar throat.

Renew Life products are formulated by Brenda Watson, a colon therapist. Lots of knowledge in the process here. I also love this company because their toll free number is on every package and every brochure so they are always there for questions. They also have a fabulous education program for health food store employees.

Yes, ReNew Life makes excellent products. One couldn't go wrong choosing them. The make the IntestiNew I recommend as part of the program.

I've seen some pretty incredible results with the products I suggest. I haven't tried FloraSmart. Of the many probiotics I've tried, PB-8 has worked the best including being better than Natren's Healthy Trinity while costing much less.

The best to you.

Just checked out the free recipe you recommend.  Sounds good.  I've battled a serious overgrowth...systemic, for many years.  At this point, I've tired many different products, diets, etc.  It can get pretty discouraging.  I'd like to give the diet a try but I've ordered an anti-parasite program...Dr. Natur.  Should I finish this (2 months) first, and then start your recommended diet, or take all of your recommended supplements along with the anti-parasitic products?  My problem is pretty servere, leaky gut and the whole bit.  I'm desparate.

Hi Kelley,

I referenced your www.squidoo.com/foodcravings link in the past and wanted to go back to clarify a few things, but now there is no information on that URL.

If the information is still available would you please post the updated link?

Thanks!
