Last week, three prominent neurosurgeons told CNN interviewer Larry King that they did not hold cell phones next to their ears. Dr. Keith Black, Dr. Vini Khurana, and CNN’s chief medical correspondent, Dr. Sanjay Gupta all maintained that the practice could be unsafe.
Along with Senator Edward M. Kennedy’s recent diagnosis of a glioma, a type of tumor that critics have long associated with cell phone use, the doctors’ remarks have helped reignite the debate about cell phones and cancer.
According to the Food and Drug Administration, three large epidemiology studies since 2000 have shown no harmful effects. However, that the average period of phone use in those studies was about three years, which provides no information about the long-term exposures that could lead to cancer.
“What we’re seeing is suggestions in epidemiological studies that have looked at people using phones for 10 or more years,” says Louis Slesin, editor of Microwave News, an industry publication that tracks the research.
I find this New York Times article a very hopeful sign. Those “in the know” in the medical professions, after mountains of evidence have rendered it inarguable, are finally becoming aware of the very real dangers of cell phones. This is often the first step to such knowledge becoming common in the general population.
And the truth is, we are on the verge of a brain cancer epidemic. It could grow to 500,000 cases as soon as 2010, and there may be over a million cases in the U.S. alone by 2015.
Even if you manage to avoid brain cancer, there are risks ranging from headaches and dizziness to Alzheimer’s disease to impotence.
It will take a while for this to become mainstream news, of course. First, the information has to clear the multiple hurdles put in place by the corporate propaganda machines. Just as happened for decades with cigarettes, they will try to hide the truth. There are companies making lots and lots of money off of cell phones, and they will do their best to spread misdirection, spin, and outright lies.
In addition, the government agencies which are in theory there to protect you have entered into mutually profitable “partnerships” with the very businesses they are supposed to regulate, meaning there is very little real regulation going on.
Quite simply, money talks.
In 2007 alone, the telecommunications industry spent almost $250 million on political lobbying. Over the past decade, they have spent a grand total of nearly $2.4 billion. Of course, that’s just a drop in the bucket compared to their profits.
In the single year of 2007, the top 20 telecom companies had combined revenues of more than $869 billion.
The FDA is Bought and Paid For
In the United States there are no less than three regulatory agencies that arguably have jurisdiction over cell phones. The first is the FDA, which is responsible by law for regulating any device that emits radiation. But over the past few decades, a series of changes in government policy have for the most part prevented the FDA from being the watchdog organization it was designed to be; these days, it exists mostly to give an imprimatur of government approval to industrial products.
Starting in the mid-1980’s, various industries lobbied Congress to pressure the FDA into speeding up the approval of new drugs and products. Congress was reluctant to pour more money into the organization, so instead they came up with a novel plan: creating a “partnership” between the FDA and the industries it was intended to regulate.
Now, the FDA collects “user fees” from companies, which have grown to account for a significant chunk of the agency’s overall budget. In other words, the FDA now receives corporate sponsorship from the very industry that it aims to regulate. They have been transformed from a corporate watchdog into a customer of those same corporations. They do very little regulating as a result, since they want to keep their “partners” happy.
The EPA is Now Powerless
The EPA has responsibility for any building or factory that emits radiation into the environment, such as a cell phone tower. In the early 1990’s, they planned to start regulating these towers.
But the vast telecommunications industry used its lobbying resources to get a highly self-serving provision inserted into the Telecommunications Act of 1996. Since 1996, a cell phone base station is defined as a radiation emitting “device” rather than a building. Since they are now defined as devices, the EPA has lost its authority to regulate them.
The FCC is Bought and Paid For AND Has No Power!
Another result of the Telecommunications Act was to put nearly all regulatory power over cell phones in the hands of the Federal Communications Commission, or FCC. But the FCC is charged only with overseeing the fair and equitable use of the electromagnetic spectrum. They are not a regulatory agency with regard to health, the environment, or consumer safety. They have no regulatory authority to protect you.
Even if they could, they most likely wouldn’t; like the FDA, they are making a great deal of money off of their corporate “partners”. The supposedly “public” electromagnetic spectrum is auctioned off to companies by the FCC.
What’s more, after the dot-com crash of the late 90’s, many technology companies who had purchased the wavelengths found themselves strapped for cash. They owed money to the FCC, and no longer had any way to pay it. So the FCC cut a deal: they took a small percentage of the owed money as a down payment, and then agreed to collect the rest as the cell phone companies earned money from consumers.
Essentially, the FCC is a mortgage holder for the mobile phone industry.
The FCC now actually has a vested interest in the rapid deployment of technology and build-up of the industry, so that they can collect the rest of their money. They are not going to make any efforts to block anything the industry wants.
This is a classic case of the fox guarding the henhouse.
This Must Change, and it Will
Still, in spite of the obstacles, the truth is coming out, and this New York Times article is evidence of that. The more doctors come on board, the more people will be convinced. You as well, can help by convincing your family, your friends, and your colleagues.
In the meantime, take steps to protect yourself. Getting rid of your cell phone altogether can help. But even if you don’t want to take that step, you can still minimize your exposure and reduce your risks, and the risks to your loved ones.
Reduce your cell phone use, keep it at least six inches away from your body, and turn your cell phone off when it isn’t in use -- as long as your cell phone is on, it emits radiation intermittently, even when you are not actually making a call.
Barring a life threatening emergency, children should not use a cell phone, or a wireless device of any type. Children are far more vulnerable to cell phone radiation than adults, because of their thinner skull bones.
Use your cell phone only where reception is good; the weaker the reception, the more power your phone must use to transmit and the deeper the dangerous radio waves penetrate into your body.
Consider using a headset with well-shielded wires. However, be aware that if a wired headset is not well-shielded -- and most of them are not -- the wire itself acts as an antenna attracting ambient radio waves and transmitting radiation directly to your brain. Make sure that the wire used to transmit the signal to your ear is shielded.
The best kind of headset to use is a combination shielded wire and air-tube headset. These operate like a stethoscope, transmitting the information to your head as an actual sound wave; although there are wires which still must be shielded, there is no wire that goes all the way up to your head.
My New Book Due Out This Fall
I recently finished my latest book, Wireless Deception. It just needs to go through final edits and then typesetting and printing, so I hope to have it out in the fall. The book will reveal the rest of the story.
I have to give me personal experience here, I do seem to have abnormal sensitivities, I'll admit that. I get reactions to foods and medicines almost immediately after I eat them. However, I thought this would be worth relating. About nine years ago I had a cell phone. And eve just holding it close to my ear, I could feel the heat and the waves and I would get just searing headaches that would last for a couple of hours. After going through headsets and the like, I just realized that I couldn't keep doing that anymore. Since I had to sign a year contract to buy the phone, I called the customer service department to see what could be done. The fellow was congenial and all was going well. Until he said "why do you want to do this?" And I said "Because I just get terrible headaches whenever I just go near this phone." He immediately panicked and put me on hold. After a long wait, he came back and said "I talked to my supervisor and studies show there are no negative effects from cell phone use . . ." After listening to his spiel for fifteen interminable minutes, I finally said "Listen, I know what the studies say, but I have to go by my own experience and I do get terrible headaches whenever I just get near the phone. I'm very sensitive always have been, and I feel things before the average person does." Back on hold again, he put me. He came back later and said "Well, you know I can even let you out your contract this month without any kind of a penalty if you give me another reason for getting out of the contract." Weary by this point, I finally said "I've run out of money." The fellow immediately arranged things and I was out of my contract without any kind of a penalty or anything. I was relieved. But then later, I thought to myself. I wonder if they do this to other folks who give the same complaint I did, originally?
This reminds me of what my gynecologist said when I discussed going off birth control. I had mentioned that I actually started having asthma symptoms around the same time that I had started on birth control. She said there was no evidence supporting that connection and completely dismissed it. She did add however...that even if it HAD caused the asthma, the damage is done and there is no point in investigating further. So...the doctor never reported the information and the possible connection has been buried once again.
I have a friend in Japan, who when he realized he was electrosensitive but couldn't quit his salesman job or the cell phone that went with it, got an old black rotary bakelite telephone, attached the cell phone to that, and carried it everywhere with him. (I should write a book called "The Joy of Electrosensitivity.") It had much better sound quality than the cell phone by itself. It made a grand statement. He since found a way to quit the job and the cell phone.
Porphyria, many electronic products have lead solder in them. especially those built before the early 2000's. I'm not sure, but older style telephones may even have lead contained transmitters/receivers. Anyhow, your chance of lead contamination is probably zero if the lead components are not exposed.
This goes to show that ststistics are the leading cause of cancer depending on who is paying for the study!
Thank you for telling us about the regulatory history of cell phones in the US! One other point in the Telecommunications Act was to free cell phone tower siting restriction by environmental concerns. Lawyers for the industry interpreted this as including health concerns, so at meetings on the siting of towers, citizens were not allowed to bring up the ?h word.?
At about the same time, as cell phone service was expanding in Japan, jurisdiction over EMF health concerns was transferred from the Health and Welfare Ministry to the Posts and Telecommunications Ministry, which like the FCC has no expertise in health. Their job has been to stonewall when citizens come forward with complaints. Clearly, cell phones are a cash cow for the government here as well.
Also at that time (1995), the government deliberately leaked a report on dioxin toxicity to the media. (I was involved as a translator--the politics was so Byzantine I won?t try to explain.) I was amazed, because they had been stonewalling on dioxins for decades. I couldn?t believe they would actually do something to improve the environment at the expense of industry! Good things happen, I thought. Ho! Next thing I knew every new ailment was being blamed on dioxins. An exasperated researcher explained dioxin levels had peaked some 20 years previously in Japan with the discontinuation of certain herbicides in rice fields. Conditions I came to associate with EMF were all being blamed on dioxins. When people moved away from the suspected dioxin sources, their illnesses followed them. Someone up high knew that people were going to be sick. The research has been available for decades. The Gauss Network in Japan had been set up to deal with EMF from high tension power lines, and they knew what was going to happen and were protesting. You all wouldn?t believe me if the same thing weren?t happening all over the place in many other fields! (Bless you for your forum, Dr. Mercola!)
Why is everyone going batty over this issue, when the computer and computer screen you're apparently sitting next to, also emit RF radiation? Your TV, radio, automobile's dashboard, and your vacuum cleaner emit RF radiation. WAtch your TV when you turn on your vaccuum cleaner. During a thunderstorm, listen to the interference on your radio from lightning. Look at the sticker on the back of your pc - "Complies with FCC Part 15 regulations" or similar. Any type of electric device gives off RF radiation. Take a flourescent tube and watch it glow when you stand with it underneath high voltage power lines. Carpenters and Electricians use RF receiver devices to locate the electric lines in the walls of your home. Fine. A cell phone gives off a RF of around 800MHz, and also in the 900-1200 MHz range. But it's low wattage. If you think it causes brain tumors, fine, keep it away from your head. But to extrapolate this belief into every other issue the world offers up, smacks of paranoia.
Dear I Eat, the computer screen I sit next to is LCD and a meter away from me. The body of the computer is two meters away. The mouse is still a problem, but I am finding ways to minimize its use. The reason I am stuck with an aging Mac is that it is hard to find computers with less radiation. Scoff all you want. I am the happy one who used to have allergies, because I didn't know all of the helpful information you have kindly explained above about radiating devices in our daily lives.
Good luck to you sleepybob. No one believes me either and I've forwarded them posts from this website about cell phones in the past and my niece is still letting her almost 2-year-old daughter talk on hers all of the time. But I'm still going to keep forwarding them to her. Boy am I hypocrite, the only phone I have is a cell phone, but I do use the speaker part of it a lot more often and I keep saying that I'm going to buy that headset thing that Mercola sells, but I just haven't yet. I am trying to change my ways in accordance with what I learn on this site, but WOW! I have to change everything!!! Oh well, a change here and a change there--I'll reach perfection some day (yeah right!) LOL
