Why Fish Oil is Good for You

Alzheimer‘s, elderly, happyFish oil is known to play a role in preventing Alzheimer’s disease, and UCLA researchers have discovered why.

Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), an omega-3 fatty acid found in fish oil, increases the production of LR11, a protein that destroys a protein that forms the “plaques” associated with Alzheimer’s disease.

LR11 is also found in low levels in Alzheimer’s patients, and since this protein helps prevent the toxic plaques that are thought to harm neurons in your brain, it is believed to be a factor in causing the disease.

The researchers examined both fish oil in the diet and DHA administered directly to neurons grown in a laboratory.

Even low doses of DHA increased LR11 in rat neurons, and dietary fish oil increased LR11 in brains of rats or mice that had been genetically altered to develop Alzheimer’s disease, researchers said.

DHA also had a beneficial impact on human neuronal cells in culture.

The researchers concluded that high levels of DHA lead to abundant LR11, which seems to protect against Alzheimer’s. Conversely, low levels of LR11 lead to the formation of beta amyloid plaques that harm your brain.

What’s left to be determined, according to the researchers, is what dose is most effective. In areas where dietary DHA is high, a small dose may be beneficial, while in the United States, where there’s a deficiency of DHA, a larger dose may be necessary.

Dr. Mercola''s Comments Dr. Mercola's Comments:

In my opinion, you can never read too many good things about omega-3 fats, because this is one of the crucial building blocks to health that are often lacking in Americans’ diets.

Omega-3 fats like DHA are called “essential” fatty acids because your body doesn’t make them on its own. So, you must acquire  them through outside  sources. Believe me, this is one fat you do NOT want to be deficient in as omega-3 fat can:
As this study mentions, omega-3 fats are also widely known to prevent Alzheimer’s disease, which is not surprising when you consider that DHA is the most abundant essential fatty acid in your brain.

Your Best Source of Omega-3 Fat

The most valuable omega-3 fats are the longer-chain fats like DHA and EPA. These are nearly exclusively found in marine sources like fish and fish oils. However, because of pollution concerns I do not recommend that you increase your intake of fish to get your omega-3.  And don’t for a moment think that farm-raised fish are any better -- they are FAR worse than wild-caught fish and should be avoided.

Instead, I suggest you opt for a high-quality omega-3 supplement -- but not just ANY omega-3 supplement will do. One of the best sources of omega-3 fats that is highly stable and pure is from Antarctic krill oil.

Although I still advocate high-quality fish oils as well, fish oil is a challenge as it highly perishable and can easily become rancid inside of your body if you don’t get enough antioxidants.

Krill oil, however, has endogenous antioxidants right in it, which greatly reduces any concerns of rancidity.

Please do realize that flaxseeds are NOT a good source of the omega-3 fats DHA and EPA. While flaxseeds have some merit in improving your health, in terms of omega-3 you should not rely on them for your sole source of omega-3 nutrition, as you will not receive the benefits you read about.

Flaxseeds do not contain DHA and EPA, rather they contain ALA (alpha linolenic acid). And humans have a very limited capacity to convert smaller and less useful omega-3 fats like the ALA found in flax, to the more useful higher order fats EPA and DHA.

Part of getting enough omega-3 fats has to do with optimizing your ratio of omega-3 to omega-6 fats (which come largely from vegetable oils).

The ideal ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fats is approximately 1:1. This is what your ancestors thrived on for hundreds of generations. Today, largely as a result of consuming far too many omega-6 fats and too few omega-3 fats, our ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 averages from 20:1 to 50:1!

To get your omega-6 to omega-3 ratio closer to the ideal 1:1, simply cut back on all vegetable oils (you’ll need to read labels if you eat processed foods) and get a regular supply of high-quality omega-3 fat, like that from krill oil, daily.

Other Natural Tools for Preventing Alzheimer’s

Omega-3 fats are an excellent tool for fighting Alzheimer’s, but they are far from the only one. Please understand that the experts are predicting that more than 5 million Americans currently have Alzheimer’s, and by 2050 that could increase to between 11 million and 16 million people in the United States alone.

Here is another important fact that you need to understand:

“Neither dementia nor Alzheimer's are a normal part of aging.”

Your memory and brain functioning do not have to decline simply because you are getting older. This is especially true if you follow these guidelines, which will greatly increase your chances of avoiding dementia and Alzheimer's:

1. Eat a nutritious diet like the one described in my nutrition plan, including regularly consuming a healthy source of animal-based omega-3 fats.

2. Exercise. Studies have shown that it protects your brain (along with being good for a host of other reasons).

3. Avoid and remove mercury from your body. This means not only removing any existing mercury in your body, but also striving not to take in any more (via polluted fish, thimerosal-containing vaccines or flu shots). Dental amalgam fillings are one of the major sources of mercury in many people's bodies (however, you should be healthy before having them removed).

4. Avoid aluminum, as it has been linked to Alzheimer's. It can be found in antiperspirants, drinking water and aluminum cookware.

5. Challenge your mind. Doing activities such as crossword puzzles, brainteasers and learning new things may help build up the brain, making it less susceptible to the lesions associated with Alzheimer's disease.

Does anyone know of a small pharmaceutical company that is beginning to make a bio-identical DHA and EPA?  A good investment?

If everyone takes fish oil, there isn't going to be enough to go around for all 6 billion earthlings.

I have read of attempts to take the same from sea algae and sea weeds.

Even though Dr. Mercola recommends Carlson's Cod Liver Oil, I choose to use Spectrum Fish Oil.  It is "from non-threatened species of wild-caught, small, plankton-feeding fish that are low on the food chain".  It's also tested for mercury, PCBs and lead.

If someone is on a limited budget will taking Krill oil cover all you needs Omega 6, 3, 9? If you have someone who does not like fish except for Tuna and Shellfish and the only meat they can eat is lamb ( which they cannot afford) what would you recommend, for women in their 30's and women in their 50's who are starting to have memory problems.

I would think prevention and addition of Silica would be warranted instead, frankly the supply of horsetail is more rampant that are fishes needed or Krill that is a singular food source for many large sea mamals.  We are all probably major deficient in our daily silica intake.

People need to research the precursors and requirements for utilisaton of the vital nutrients.  Silica is the glue, and a much needed requirement for our bodies.  We are looking for root causation, right?

Horsetail tea is actually tasty.  The plant is not all that good, but I sometimes chew on it.  You can find it all over the place.

Nope. Omega-3 and Omega-6 fats are all poly-unsaturated

You both are right. :)  Omega 3 EPA & DHA come from saturated sources fish and grass finished cow tallow and butter. Lamb is good source too.  The ALA form comes from plant based sources.mostly.  ALA has to be converted to the EPA & DHA by the body.  It seems to be that women convert better than men but the better ratio of omega 6 to 3 you have plays role in helping to do  the conversion.  EPA & DHA come from the algae the fish obtain in their diets.  Walnuts are good source of 3 in the nut family.  Chia seeds are good source of the ALA..........

Phantom O‘ Banjo said EPA & DHA come from the algae the fish obtain" - so why wouldn‘t you just eat the algae yourself - go right to the source of the nutrition, instead of getting the extracted oil from fish livers? Personally, that just sounds too disgusting to even think of eating! I‘ve been eating algae (in capsule form) for years, and it has an excellent ratio of the 3‘s and 6‘s. Plus, you get all the other goodness along with it - micronutrients, vitamins, minerals, protein, chlorophyll, etc.

I can't speak to the Alzheimer, however I can speak to the effects on my 10 year son who has autism. His eye contact went way up as well as his cognitive abilities as measured by standard I.Q. tests. When tested four years ago his I.Q. was at 40. After being on fish oil for three years (his last I.Q. test was the last school year 2006-07) his score was 69. Also on a personal note; I was diagnosed with arthritis in both knees this past summer and prior to the diagnosis I was taking Glycosmine (spelling is wrong sorry) for about a year prior to combat the knee pain. Well it stopped working after about a year. I began taking fish oil for improved memory initially, but it has helped that and my knees as well as my skin. I used to have alligator skinned feet (rough and cracked to the point of bleeding) and that too is gone as well. So I believe that fish oil is an essential supplement and I wouldn't consider going without it.

Deb, what fish oil did you take and which one did you give your child? Is their one made for a 3 year old with mild Autism - how do you get them to take it.

Thanks

mladyraven-

I hope someone with more knowledge answers your question, but I can say my kids (since about 18 months old) really like the Nordic Naturals strawberry flavor Pro-DHA pills. The are little spheres that "pop" when you bite them, then you chew the outer layer. I think it also comes in a liquid. They like the Coromega packs in Orange flavor, which says no sugar or artificial sweetners, but there is something in there that makes it sweet, so may not be good for your son. I give my children cod liver oil now. It is lemon flavor and they only take it because I tell them it is to help their teeth and bones grow big and strong. I read it is best to give it right before a healthy meal because it will help them utilize the nutrients and minerals in the food. Remember to try anything you give your children to see if you like it, or if you detect something strange. I believe Moms are given that heightened sense of taste and smell to keep their kids safe.  :)

I am sorry I didn't provide this with my original post so here it is. My son takes 1 teaspoon (5 ml by oral syringe) daily of Nordic Naturals Artic Cod Liver Oil. The flavor is Peach all though we have tried orange flavored as well. The DHA amount per teaspoon is: 625mg. EPA is 410mg. "Other" Omega 3's is: 1260mg. Oleic Acid (Omega 9) is 600mg. In addition to the omega line up this fish oil also contains: Vitamin A: 2950 IU, Vitamin D:20 IU, and Vitamin E (d-alpha tocopheral):30IU. Kirkman Labs (http://www.kirkmanlabs.com). Now keep this in mind; JR is on a whole host of supplements to counter the effects of the mercury. For those interested in what he takes and what it does check out the page on my website at: http://autism-hope.150m.com/JR's%20Supplement%20List.html. As to how I get JR to take well it's never been an issue. His cognitive levels are high enough that he realizes this benefits him so he takes it willingly.

Ok the fish oil I take can be bought at Wal-Mart (I go for the cheaper because I can't afford to have us both on the best). The maker of my fish oil is Spring Valley. The ingredients per gelcap (I take 3 a day) is: Natural Fish Oil Concentrate is: 1000mg, EPA is: 180mg and DHA is: 120mg. The concentrate is derived from: anchovy, mackeral and sardines. It is 99.99% purified.

I hope this information helps those who were asking the questions.

I have a 3 year old and she loves her fish oils.  I have been giving them to her since she was 18 months.  They are made by Nordic Naturals, Artic cod liver oil, and they have a strawberry taste so they taste a little better.  They are chewable and are the only thing I can find that she will take, mostly because they are stawberry flavored.  I hope that helps 'mladyraven'.
