Scientific American Has Second Thoughts About Fluoride

fluoride, water fluoridationEditors for Scientific American believe recent studies suggest that fluoride raises the risks of disorders affecting teeth, bones, the brain and the thyroid gland, and in general “scientific attitudes” about fluoridation may be shifting.

"Fluoride, the most consumed drug in the USA, is deliberately added to 2/3 of public water supplies theoretically to reduce tooth decay, but with no scientifically-valid evidence proving safety or effectiveness," says lawyer Paul Beeber, president of the New York State Coalition Opposed to Fluoridation.

Meanwhile, according to environmental reporter and director of New York University‘s Science, Health and Environmental Reporting Program Dan Fagin, "There is no universally accepted optimal level for daily intake of fluoride."

After analyzing hundreds of fluoride studies, researchers found that fluoride:
  • Alters endocrine function, especially in the thyroid
  • Causes dental fluorosis in young children
  • May lower IQ
  • May increase the risk of bone fractures
Because scientific evidence suggests that water fluoridation is ineffective and dangerous to health, over 1,200 professional are now urging Congress to stop water fluoridation.

Dr. Mercola''s Comments Dr. Mercola's Comments:

If more Americans knew that fluoride, which many dentists STILL mistakenly promote as the panacea for healthy teeth, is also the active toxin in rat poisons and cockroach powder, I suspect they would feel vastly different about ingesting it via drinking water and toothpaste.

But FINALLY the tides do seem to be turning.

In 2005, eleven unions within the EPA publicly called for a ban of water fluoridation, over concerns that it may cause bone cancer. And in 2006, the American Dental Association warned parents of infants not to use fluoridated water when mixing baby formula.

When you begin to examine the evidence surrounding water fluoridation, this gradual retraction makes perfect sense.

As award-winning journalist Christopher Bryson revealed in his book The Fluoride Deception, there has been a multi-tiered effort -- or as Bryson says, an abuse of power -- by military and industry scientists and public health officials to shamelessly promote fluoride to the dentistry field and the American public with little regard to the implications it would have on human health.

Just what are those potential implications?
  • An increased risk of bone cancer
  • Fluorosis, a discoloring of your teeth and breakdown of their enamel (between 30 percent and 50 percent of children have dental fluorosis on at least two teeth in “optimally fluoridated communities”)
  • An increased risk of osteoporosis
  • Developmental problems such as lower IQ
But that’s not all. According to Paul Connett, PhD:

1. Fluoride accumulates in your bones and makes them more brittle and prone to fracture. Lifetime exposure to fluoride will contribute to higher rates of hip fracture in the elderly.

2. Fluoride accumulates in your pineal gland, possibly lowering the production of melatonin, a very important regulatory hormone

3. There are serious concerns about a connection between fluoridation and the current epidemics of both arthritis and hypothyroidism.

4. In animal studies fluoride at 1 ppm in drinking water increases the uptake of aluminum into your brain.

5. Counties with 3 ppm or more of fluoride in their water have lower fertility rates.

6. The fluoridating agents most commonly used in the United States not only increase the uptake of lead into children's blood but are also associated with an increase in violent behavior.

Of course, the main reason why fluoride is reportedly added to the U.S. water supply in the first place is to prevent cavities. Yet, data compiled by the World Health Organization shows no difference in tooth decay in countries that use fluoridated water compared with countries that don’t use fluoridated water. So not only is fluoride unsafe, it is ineffective as well.

Get That Fluoride Out of Your Water!

If you are receiving your water from a municipal water supply in the United States, your water is probably fluoridated -- and a simple carbon filter will not remove it.

You must filter your tap water with a reverse osmosis filter to remove fluoride, and remember to use this water not only for drinking but also for washing fruits and veggies, making ice cubes and cooking.

You can also join the fight against water fluoridation by supporting the Fluoride Action Network’s petition to end water fluoridation. It’s already been signed by over 1,200 professionals, including a Nobel Prize winner, three officers in the union representing professionals at EPA headquarters, the executive board of the American Academy of Environmental Medicine, leading fluoride researchers, and medical, dental, scientific and environmental professionals from around the world.

To voice your opinion against water fluoridation, simply send this immediate e-mail to your senators and representative.

let's not be naive folks.  flourided was a waste product of the development of the A-bomb in the Manhattan project.  how else does industry get rid of its toxice waste except to dump it on the public claiming that it will 'help' us.  Now most people will shake their heads in amazement. They will wonder how anyone could have been so stupid.  They may ask how the FDA would support this and maybe even blame the industry for selective presentation of research.  However, the real roots are much deeper and more sinister.  The public is not only a guinea pig, Nazi and American style of experimentation, but there is a core belief among many at the top of the heap that people are to be eliminated as too costly in the world.  Eugenics is alive and well among the superwealthy.  Thus, we have the government support of genocidal wars in Dafur, the active starvation of the Palestinians with 'targeted' killings that just happen to level civilian residential homes and refuse to allow health products into the country, or the genocidal wars in Iraq.  Here at home they employ vaccines that at the very least diminishes the immune system, products like toxic bisphonates for osteoporosis, industrial sludge for fertilizers, and highly toxic flouride sold to the public as healthful despite all the yrs of research to the contrary.

It may sound paranoid (but it is not), but we, the people are under attack, and it is not by aliens from abroad.  It is our own government and the corporations that control it that does this to us and most people just walk into the modern 'gas chambers' of poisoning with a smile on their face.  This 'new' information about flouride is not new, it is just percolating up through the heavy blanket of misinformation that usually goes for news.

Rather than shake our heads in dismay, it would be more to the point to gather our public energies to fight back.

I must echo Tanya,

At some point you begin to see a pattern emerge which clearly points to something very 'un-American' about the chemicals, toxins, and other factors which we are purposefully exposed to.  Ignorance is one thing, but anyone who has studied the historical records can easily see where these 'technological improvements' came from.  One hint: It had nothing to do with benefiting mankind!  I hate the fact that there is a realistic possibility that eugenics and population reduction have something to do with this.  I wish I were wrong, but all indications are that someone - somewhere really does want to harm us all.  Isn't that just amazing - after all the decision-makers who are in place to protect us, are actually apathetic or in some cases even aggressively pursuing policies that are contrary to their oaths of office!  Go figure.

I still don't understand how the FDA could allow this to happen.
Do you suppose they give their children water with flouride in it?

I have created an MSN group for people to talk about topics like this, not much there right now ...just getting started - it's called Turning Point

Here's a surprise for most of us:  the TEA plant has a natural affinity for sucking up all the fluoride out of the soil and being concentrated with it.  If you drink tea of any kind you are getting massive doses of fluoride.  The only tea I've found without Fluoride is the one Mercola used to sell:  Body Ecologys Black Tea and Green Tea Concentrates.  However, I must say, that drinking them is like drinking the tea you get in the average Chinese Buffet restaurant.  It tastes like it's been "cooking" for hours and hours.  It has a burnt tea taste.  So once again we have a quandry....drink better tasting tea but get tons of fluoride, or drink the Body Ecology tea which tastes burnt but is very good for you.

What's really disturbing is that even if the water you drink is not flouridated, so much of the water in the US is flouridated, that most of our fruits and vegetables contain flouride.

I found out by my doctor that this town's water is not flouridated.  Then he tried to push flouridation on my kids.

Grrr.

I think it's still standard for pediatricians to offer a prescription for "vitamins with fluoride" to children in non-fluoridated areas. We've had two different doctors in two different places offer the same nonsense. Unfortunately, most don't read the literature about fluoride or know much about what's in our food. The mechanically separated chicken that commonly makes up those "nuggets" kids love contain large amounts of fluoride, so ironically, the "vitamins" that are supposed to make up for the deficiencies from a high-nugget diet can actually lead to fluorosis!

I thanked the doctor politely for the prescription ... and then discarded it.  But I may just offer a one-page article at the next appointment. If the doctor sees the light, who knows -- it could save a child from problems in the future.

Water fluoridation is the tip of the iceberg for our exposures to fluoride. Just about every non-organic food that we consume has some amount of fluoride. The antibiotics that are injected into beef and poultry contains massive amounts and remains long after the animal is slaughtered. These antibiotics are in the class called fluoroquinolones which are widely used for humans as well. One very well known drug called cipro is the mother of all deadly drugs and used extensively for sinus infections, urinary infections and anthrax. Many other drugs such as antidepressants contain high amounts of fluoride as well. It's not too hard to put the pieces together that after the 911 anthrax scare thousands of people were put on preventative doses of cipro for months. many, many of these people have PERMANENT disabilities because of fluoride ingestion. Chronic fatigue syndrome, Fibromyalgia, Arthritis, and Gulf War syndrome can all be linked to fluoride toxicity. one nice little bit of history tells us that the *** knew all too well the debilitating effects of fluoride and added it to their prisoners drinking water to break there will and spirit. The evidence is really overwhelming but one thing we are up against is that fluoride is a toxic waste by-product of the fertilizer and aluminum industries and must be dumped somewhere. This is how water fluoridation started, fake studies stating that it is good for us conjured up by important people with a lot of money on the line to get rid of their waste. Either pay millions to get rid of it or make millions by selling it to municipalities. To say that fluoride does this or that in humans is really missing the point, fluoride destroys every part of a human being. fluoride = pain, suffering and death. I have been recovering from fluoride toxicity for 2 years and it's a nightmare. hope this helps someone.

Hi Jaxonhell I have just been reading about the effects of iodine and that it can remove toxic chemicals such as fluoride, bromide, lead aluminum, mercury and biological toxins  from our bodies. Personally I agree that we should fight our governments to stop this mass medication of this toxic substance but in the meantime iodine could prove to be the miracle substance along with good nutrition that our bodies need. Here is the website that I got the information from.www.newmediaexplorer.org/sepp. Good luck and I hope this helps.

It is nice to see science finally backing up what has been considered an "outlandish" opinion that fluoride in your water is not good for the body.
