Socotra

Socotra

Socotra

If you woke up one day on Socotra Island, you might be inclined to think you were transported to another planet. This island has been geographically isolated from mainland Africa, and is teeming with 700 extremely rare species of flora and fauna, a full third of which are found nowhere else on earth.

It is situated in the Indian Ocean 250 kilometers from Somalia and 340 kilometers from Yemen. The climate is harsh, hot and dry, yet the most amazing plant life thrives there.

If you have an adventurous side you can actually visit Socotra Island, as it’s open to travelers. The island is geared toward eco-tourism and sustaining the local economy and way of life. Keep in mind, though, that although 40,000 people live on Socotra Island the Yemeni government installed the first roads just two years ago!
