Finally, after reading these articles for years, I'm putting in my comment.
I use hydrogen peroxide to disinfect my laundry. I keep a little spray bottle next to the washing machine. It is interesting that the dirtiest article in my wash is the hand towels. So, I change them often. Also, baking soda cleans most everything. These are my favorite products and so cheap!
I use Enjo cleaning products and Laundry Pure for doing my laundry. Enjo fibres allow to clean the entire house with just cold water. Laundry Pure treats incoming water with UV, Ozone, Silver and the treated water goes into an existing washing machine. I have two small boys and I haven't used any chemical products for over 1-1/2 years. The other thing I like about using these products is that there is no product. With using Natural products or hydrogen peroxide or vinegar there is still something being maufactured and produced, trucks for delivery, and plastics being made. And I find both products work better than anything else I personally have tried.
We are starting to use Hydrogen Peroxide in our laundry, as my husband works in our local hospital as a custodian. He is cleaning isolations, C-Diff rooms, M. R. S. A., as well an H1N1 rooms and needs to gown up every time. The chemical the custodians use in the hospital are sometimes so strong that the custodians need to also wear masks. We use it straight (35% Hydrogen Peroxide), works to kill anything in his uniforms. He usually washes his own uniforms himself, then disinfects the washer after to not spread any infections around. What are Enjo cleaning products, Healthytek? I have never heard of this product. We use Melaleuca ourselves.
Stoic, by "we need these" I am saying that the human body is alive with bacteria..we need bacteria for our survival. People who are so germaphobic that their house is sterile and contstantly use bacterial wash are opening themselves up to illness and disease as they are killing everything off. Exposure is needed to germs to build up the immunity. If not exposed to anything the immune system is not primed (especially in the case of young children). A great example is childhood illness eg measles, mumps, chickenpox are all regarded in altenative circles as being a "needed" illness to prime the immune system and provide lifelong immunity...
Of course I would not wish the bubonic plague on anyone but its the same with vaccines - improved living conditions, better food and water, better health, all contribute to reducing outbreaks and illness far better than chemicals and vaccination. :)
JGW commented on Hydrogen Peroxide being used as a mouthwash ... a belief and practice I also had until another trusted and well published natural health MD pointed out that it's fine as long as you have no mercury amalgam fillings in your mouth. Hydrogen peroxide can react with the amalgams and release toxic mercury gas. Until you have these fillings properly removed, grapefruit seed extract diluted in pure water is an excellent substitute mouthwash.
Sunlight is mentioned at the end by Dr Mercolas as the best desinfectant there is for drying laundry, and it's totally free. So ditch your bacteria-ridden electric or gas dryer and erect a laundry line in your backyard like in the old days !
T-Rex, yes, dry clothes in the open air and save energy at the same time. I have a covered area for drying clothes so they don't get rained on in winter. I have never needed a clothes dryer, even at the nappy stage of my life.
AGREED------------100%!!!!!
I won't use any of the chemical disinfectants near my sons.
What are soap nuts and what exactly do they do? I've never heard of them. Can you get them at any Natural store?
When using peroxide and vinegar, do you spray one, wipe, and then spray the other and wipe again? Or do you spray one, spray the other, and then wipe once? Do you need to combine the two before wiping (not in one bottle but spraying separately? Does it matter either way? What I'm getting at is does spraying both make the two more powerful? Or as someone commented in another location, does combining the two cause a poisonous chemical reaction?
FDA Conspired with Chemical Industry to Declare Bisphenol-A Harmless
I cannot clean with any chemicals. I get really bad chest pains.
Wow. This is really scary. The part that scares me the most is this... "Lister’s carbolic acid, now known as phenol, is a common main ingredient in household detergents like Lysol, Pine-Sol and ***-n-Span. It’s also found in mouthwash....Phenol is toxic and people who are hypersensitive can experience serious side effects at very low levels."
Mouthwash is toxic? I think almost everyone in my family uses mouthwash... and how many people do you know that use lysol? My mom used lysol all the time when I was a kid. She was always spraying it all over the place. I am thinking I am hypersensitive to phenol... and that is why I was always sleeping a lot as a child. My mom poisoned me! Very scary!
People need to wake up. There are other alternatives to mouthwash... and lysol, etc. Go to your local health store and talk to them about your needs. Become aware because you might just be damaging your families (as well as your own) health!
Hope

NaturalCures, why do you feel the need to use a mouthwash at all? When I see ads for mouthwash on TV, it always seems to me they are selling a needless product. Surely it would kill the necessary bacteria in our mouths?
I would really like to know, if anyone has any useful information.
I was diagnosed with MCS and have been using vinegar and baking soda to clean everything for over 5 years now.
I wash my clothes with them, placing 1 cup of baking soda in the tub and filling the fabric softener container with white vinegar--works wonderfully. I wad up a piece of aluminum foil and place it in my dryer to replace dryer sheets. No more static cling.
A note about using vinegar: Make sure the label reads "from natural grains". If it doesn't say it, it's pretty much guaranteed from petroleum products (less expensive to produce).
An excellent read on the subject confirming my comment is "Clean House, Clean Planet" by Karen Logan, www.amazon.com/.../0671535951.
The first step to eliminating the need for deodorants is to stop using soap which alkalizes the normally acidic skin. I haven't used soap for over 35 years ... yet my sweat is odorless!!! For a super "water wetter" with a really clean feel, I use Shaklee's Basic -H ... no more than 10 drops for my entire head and body. I also use Alfalfa tablets as "Nature's Deodorizer" and eat lots of fresh dark green veggies! It takes a while to normalize the body so be patient!

How do you get rid of the mold in the shower/around the tub if you don't use bleach? I don't have the time to clean every day or other day. Will just spraying after each shower with vinegar, peroxide, or baking soda water keep the mold from forming?
Don't forget to talk to your school about their cleaning supplies too! Doris Rapp M.D.'s book discusses how chemicals and pesticides at our schools can affect children's thinking and behavior. The following link is to an article about how chemicals affected a preschooler and recommends cleaners sold in bulk to schools that are safe. www.bluedominoes.com/whats-in-your-schools-cleaning-supplies.php
My grammar school now uses safer cleaners because just one person went in and talked to them about it. They researched it, realized the potential benefits and made the change.
I just had to send a comment & add my 3 cents to the person who said they make their own cleaners with ingredients such as "Ammonia and Chlorine" Never ever ever never mix ammonia and chlorine or bleach (same thing) together unless you want to die fast right then as you are about to clean things - among other nasties -together they produce deadly chlorine gas - not only that but LOTS of it - quickly. So WARNING - do NOT mix ammonia and chlorine(bleach) together or anything that might have either as it's ingredient.
Oh, and vodka + newspaper makes a great window cleaner (just don't go drinking it all!)
Dizzy, wouldn't methylated spirits be a lot cheaper than vodka - and do the same job?
Probably! I've never tried - hate the smell. I think it's just clear, strong alcohol in general, but vodka makes them sparkle. Don't go for expensive stuff, I get the bargain basement stuff - the sort that makes the shop assistant eye you warily as if expecting to walk past you lying on a park bench later that evening... ;-)
I've used soap nuts for the past 18 months to do my laundry with. They're the best things I've used so far - no horrible chemical smells, they work well, leave your clothes incredibly soft, and they grow on trees!! Plus they're economical, cheap, make good fertiliser or compost, and help out communities in other parts of the world who could do with the help.
I was really pleased as well to go into my local organic/health food/etc co-op the other day and find they were giving away free 150ml samples of various household cleaners based on simple essential oils, fruit juices (like lemon juice), alcohol, baking soda, peroxide etc. They passed my test anyway and seem to work well.
Hey Dizz,
I have bought a sample of soap nuts but haven't used them yet. The info said you can use them for several loads, but in the same day as they will mold after a day. Do you find that is true? Or is there a way to keep them from molding? Taking them out of the pouch and leaving them to dry perhaps? I love the idea of getting away from cleaners.
I have used baking soda in the washer along with less detergent, but find it leaves a film on the clothing. Borax does this too. Am using the recommended amount-1/2 cup for a full load. Don't like the idea of having to rinse twice though-defeats the purpose of trying to conserve (I dry my clothes on a drying rack so I don't have to run the dryer except for my husbands work clothes).
Have used white vinegar as a rinse, but didn't really see any improvement. Was supposed to act like a fabric softner.
Hi again,
I use them for three or four loads, depending on how heavy/dirty the loads are, with about 5 half-nuts in the bag. Too many and the clothes come out slightly stiff, so if they're clean and really soft you've got it about right! Add a few drops of your favourite essential oil to the bag if you want them to smell of something, otherwise they just smell clean but with no actual scent.
I've never seen them go mouldy so I wouldn't say that's true, and I've had my bag of them for about a year - I usually just put the cotton bag (with them still in it and still tied; no point emptying it if you're going to use them again in a few days!) on a window sill in the sun or in the airing cupboard to dry out, then use them again. If the bag of them is kept in a slightly damp environment they'll go slightly sticky, which is normal [mine do that all the time].
I use white vinegar as a rinse with the nuts every now and then, but haven't seen too big a difference so don't know if I'd bother to be honest. The nuts leave the clothes so soft you don't need any softener or conditioner anyway.
So, in short... pop 5 or so in the bag, add a few drops of whatever oil, put them in the wash, when it's done just put the bag in the airing cupboard or in a window in the sun until next time, and after three or four loads put them on the compost heap or under a plant. Voila! Clean clothes. :)
I use a product made by Norwex and I don't use any chemicals when I clean.I wash my windows and mirrors with water and use their window cloth. In the bathroom and kitchen I use their enviro cloths with water to take off soap scumb and grease. If you want more information about their products visit their web site at norwex.com or contact me @ veday@shaw.ca
My brothers and I grew up in the countryside. We exposed ourselves to all kinds of germs (animals, poops!, wildlife, sand in mouth, frog in mouth - temporarily, ....) and are healthy as it gets! No allergies, few colds, no flues in adulthood. Studies show that small kids growing up with pets have less allergies than kids growing up without pets. We are living proof.
I agree with using natural products to clean vs chemical ones such as bleach etc. The trick is to find ones that do the job. I've tried many from health food stores that may have been safe but they weren't effective and they also were very expensive.
I've discovered that melaleuca ( tea tree oil ) is a very effective cleaner, completely natural, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and anti-viral. I've now replaced all cleaning, laundry, and personal care products with melaleuca products. I've recommended them to people who clean for a living and their customers are delighted with the results!
hi maggie, yup melaleuca products rock! i developed terrible itching and for 4 years suffered everytime i showered, or raised a sweat. i started using their products and the itching stopped immediately.
for the lady(mrs M?) who wanted to clean mould in bathroom i found tub n tile has stopped it forming and i can stay in the room as i use it even, hooray!
i guess bad mould would benefit by an initial peroxide dose to etch it off, however it is not cheap, and as a spray ,eye irritation could be a problem??
what about that anti germ stuff that every body has now for thier hands. Its also being sold as baby wipes I s this the same stuff?
hi tony, usually it is triclosan, nasty cr*p ! i , years back I bought some cheap baby wipes for cleaning my dogs ears...well i wiped my face, and it stung so bad i had to flood water on myself! and this is supposed to be for baby skin?? i don't think so.
back to vinegar on a tissue for the dogs:-)
avoid colgate products toothpaste and mouthwashes are all contaminated with triclosan. i am very annoyed at the ads on yahoo just now by them, full on , on every page aaaargh!
Melaleuca make a safe gel handwipe NO triclosan, only natural melaleuca as a disinfectant
There is more info on hydrochondriac.com about acidic and alkaline water
I use 2.5 pH strong acidic water for disinfecting from my Enagic water ionizer, I can rinse RAW meat, fish, and poultry to kill bacteria that causes illness and it also gives me strong alkaline 11.5 pH water that I use as a cleaner/degreaser. The 11.5 pH emulsifies oil, and takes pesticide residue off my fruits and veggies, then I disinfect it by spraying it with 2.5 pH strong acidic water, no more risk of salmonella, staph, e-coli, food borne illness, etc. I use the 11.5 pH water (1-2 quarts per load) in place of, yes, in place of laundry detergent and all purpose cleaners. I use the 5.5 pH beauty water as a toner on my skin and also on my hair, it makes it very soft and shiny. I drink the 9.5 pH water to alkalize my organs and rid my body of acid waste that ultimately ages us then kills us.
Lots of great ideas I plan to use. I have used vinegar & water for a while now, but I like the peroxide/vinegar spray idea. Easy to maintain, use and buy. From what I understand, another "side-effect" of the chemical anti-bacterial hand soaps, dishwashing liquid, laundry soap, etc. is to destroy the "health" of your septic tank and drain field because it destroys the bacteria that breaks down the waste. This will eventually affect your financial health and allows unprocessed waste to leach into the surrounding soil as it overflows into the drain field. I did some research when we moved into a home with septic a few years ago. I found the warning on several septic tank specialist's sites about anti-bacterial products as they affect the septic.
kittysmom, I worry about the effects on septic tanks too. Or, if you have deep sewerage, how it affects the groundwater.
One TV ad which makes me mad (among others!) is a woman pouring about a pint of disinfectant around the toilet bowl. What for? Does anyone actually put their hands in the toilet? This is purely scaremongering to sell more products.
I use vinegar, Hydrogen peroxide, baking soda...that type of cleaners in my own house, but I clean houses for a living and other people want...the stronger the better. I wear plastic gloves...the kind that hospitals use, but I can go through 4 pairs in one house. The cleaners eat through them...just melt them. It haven't found that it does any good to tell people about natural cleaners...they just don't believe that they work.
Not sure if this is helpful but I know a lady in my neck of the woods that opened a cleaning company called Sparkle and Green. She only uses Shaklee and Enjo products to clean with. She is busier than her counterparts because what she is finding is that consumers are more knowledgeable and looking for products that work and are easy to use. I hope you wear a mask when you are cleaning - I am worried about the fumes that you are breathing
Boy, I wish we had you to clean our house. I have the opposite problem -- The housekeeper who is sent to us by a healthcare organization because of my husband's condition want to use the harsh stuff, and I have to plead with her to use the baking soda, vinegar, etc. She thinks it's the "smell" we object to. I can't convince her it's so much more than that.
I keep a spray bottle of Hydrogen Peroxide in the shower and use it with natural soap to kill BO.
now that I haven't tried. I use baking soda and water to do my hair (1 tbsp baking soda to 8-10oz h20) and will use it to wash my skin with as well. My husband uses that as well and cider vinegar to rinse his hair, dresses it with olive oil (afroamerican hair). We are gradually getting rid of harsh cleaners/products for our bodies and house and replacing with natural ones. Also use the dry baking soda for underarms after shower, and follow with a scented (nontalc) powder.
Do you use pure HP in the bottle, or do you blend it with water ?
Using and diffusing theraputic grade essential oils such as lemon, peppermint, clove and lavender can have major beneficial effects on both the air and cleaning surfaces. Adding lemon oil to your washer or dishwasher can help disinfect your clothes and dishes. Additionally, some (lemon, peppermint and lavender) can help people concentration better and make fewer errors. You can put some oil into a spray bottle and spray the air or surfaces to help disinfect and kill germs also. The essential oils chosen should be THERAPUTIC GRADE. Oils purchased at health stores are usually not given this status. These oils are very strong and concentrated, so if you choose to use them, do some research to understand how to use them and what they are known for helping.
Personally I use White Vinegar, it is a good disinfectant, and also I use Grapefruit seed extract. Both are harmless to the enviroment, or the air in our home.
What is 3% Hydrogen Peroxide, is that just typical Hydrogen Peroxid?
http://tinyurl.com/5hsx4
Kris, it's the grade most commonly sold in pharmacies.
Always check the bottle for the strength. Although, as Julieanne says, it's the grade most commonly sold in AMERICAN pharmacies, here in the EU you can only buy 6% strength which means we have to dilute it 50/50. The bottle will clearly state what the percentage strength is.
I love H202 as well as white vinegar and baking soda for cleaning.. but now, as mentioned in a previous newsletter a couple weeks ago, I've purchased a Lotus sanitizer and WOW, I can't see the need for using anything else for cleaning! The charged water cleans like nothing I've ever experienced before. Windows, chrome, stoves, fridge, dog, hardwood floors, mirrors, woodwork, walls, furniture, marble, ... everything I've previously used any type of cleaner on before, I now charge up my bottle of tap water and spray/wipe.... it's clean. I mean r*e*a*l*l*y clean. The thing is awesome and I highly, highly recommend it!
where can I get this lotus charger ,Please Thanks Jerry
Glad to hear another good review on the Lotus sanitizer. I have also ordered one but am on a waiting list until mid November as there is such a great demand for the product.
Jerrie, the website is http://www.tersano.com/. Amazon also sells it at a good price. I'm in the UAE and need a 220-240V which can be purchased from Tersano, Australia.
I use this really great stuff called Quick and Brite. There is absolutely no odor (I have a problem with ammonia/windex) it is non-toxic (you can brush your teeth). It cleans EVERYTHING. Awesome on windows, grease, stains, carpets, laundry, car interiors. Use full strength or dilute (for glass). I use a teaspoon to a spray bottle. I have washed my hair with amazing results. It was actually squeaky clean. You can have your hands in this cleaner all day, and your hands do not dry out, instead they feel soft and silky as if you used lotion. I got dried blood out of a white shirt after it sat for 3 days. Mustard of the seat of my car. The best if you are greasy from working on a car!
I have been using this for over 10 years. A gallon bucket has lasted me over 3 years, and I split it with my mom and give some to friends! It cost me $50.00, but saved me so much more $ by not wasting it on things that do not work. Oven cleaners burn my nose, eyes, and throat. QnB, wipe in the oven and wipe it right off with a scrubby sponge. Cleaning and oven with this stuff is almost a pleasure. (my oven is always clean. If I spill, I just wipe out the spot with QnB in a minute). No odor, no waiting, no heating, no hard elbow work. I even have a self-cleaning oven but I do not use it, because the QnB is so much easier and faster.(AND SAFER).
Just wanted to share, because I swear by QnB. You can even use it in carpet shampooers. I did half a carpet with QnB and half with a stinky carpet shampoo. Had to redo the shampoo half. The QnB side was softer, brand-new looking, and didnt stink!
I love the stuff!
I was wondering if people could give me their opinions... After reading several articles, I found "recipes" for homemade cleaning products, like window & glass cleaner, all-purpose cleaner & shower cleaner. The main components in them (not all in one, but in various combinations along w/ dishsoap) are ammonia, bleach, rubbing alcohol and white vinegar. I made them and have been using them for a while - they actually work GREAT, better than store-bought cleaners & are much less expensive. Are these relatively safe to clean with? What about using them around children & pets? Thanks for your help :-)
We use Grapefruit Seed Extract in a small spray bottle (20 drops of GSE then top with water) and keep it in the car for the kids and I to use in place of hand sanitizer. To make it smell like something-yeah, I am brainwashed like that sometimes- I add a drop of peppermint oil, eucalyptus oil or patchouli essential oil. We love this spray and feel good about using it to disinfect after the grocery stores and public restrooms! GSE can be found at most health food stores but I bought mine on the Internet. I think I will make up bottles of this mix as Christmas gifts. A healthy and economical gift!
WOW! I didnt know to use it this way! We all take it at first signs of sniffy noses or friends have colds, flu, or any ickyness. We either do not get the cold, or we start to get it and it is over the same day. Thanks!
I agree. I use it on the laminated floors in my house. It works really
great on dog dirt and if you use two buckets of water (one with tko and the
other with plain water to rinse your mop before you dunk it back in the first
one) you can cut back on the amount of tko you use. Just keep the rinse water
clean. It's the best thing I've ever found to shampoo rugs with although the
cats hate it, so the carpets get an extra rinse too. Works on cat pee better
than the commercial stuff in the pet store. Just don't use it on your cat for
fleas or let them drink it, it can be toxic.
Shan T, what is orange tko? I wish people would spell out a phrase before they use the initials, so we know what they are talking about. It happens a lot on this forum.
I'm surprised nobody mentioned Essential Tee Tree Oil. It is easy to use and safe even undiluted or mixed in water, carrier oils, bath, laundry... It is an excellent antiseptic, anti-fungal and anti-viral.
You really shouldn't use dish soap on an animal though...or any soap/shampoo for a human. It cuts through their natural oils too much and can damage their fur and skin.
I just printed off a copy of your recipe for 3% hydrogen peroxide with baking soda and will remember to use this if one of my Jack Russell Terriers gets skunked. This happened with our older Jack Russell Terrier (Lucy). My husband, believe this or not, fed her peanut butter, which actually worked. Lucy had to open her mouth at the wrong time, skunk turned around and got her right in the open mouth just as she was going to bark. She had it in her system for the night. Next morning, out came the peanut butter. I had to work graveyard shift. When I got up around noon, the house no longer smelled of skunk. Peanut butter works if an animal gets it in the mouth. Thanks beegirl.
