Some Parents are Homeschooling Their Kids to Avoid Vaccinations

A growing network of parents have decided to homeschool their children, in part because of their belief that mandated vaccinations for public and private school children are a dangerous overreach by state governments.

A group of about 200 parents around the state of Mississippi, for example, home school their kids because they have problems with the state’s mandated vaccination schedule.

All states allow unvaccinated children to attend school with a medical doctor's excuse. Mississippi and West Virginia, however, allow no exemptions beyond medical necessity, leaving parents with homeschooling as the only option if they do not want to have their children vaccinated.

Dr. Mercola''s Comments Dr. Mercola's Comments:

Less than 30 years ago, 40 million students attended public schools, yet fewer than 100,000 children were home-educated. According to the U.S. Department of Education, over 48 million students enrolled in public schools in 2005, while the number of children being homeschooled has been estimated at just over 2 million.

The numbers of homeschooled children has increased at the rate of about 7% a year, and more than 10% in some states, outpacing the growth of public schools, which has been about 1.3%.

Families homeschool for a wide range of reasons, but at the heart of the matter is what is best for each individual child.  Avoiding vaccines is typically not the driving force behind this big decision.  However, more parents are clearly opposed to the "mandatory" vaccine laws and understand that vaccinations are not the heavily promoted miracle cure-all that will keep their children from getting sick. Instead, they are seeing the truth: that vaccines carry the risk of serious side effects such as crippling neurological damage like autism and even death.

For example, unexplained allergies and asthma are also on the rise. According to the brand new State of World Allergy Report 2008: Allergy and Chronic Respiratory Diseases, our zeal to reduce infectious disease has led to rapidly increasing allergic diseases that are becoming ever more complex.

Could the increasing number of childhood vaccinations be part of the problem?

Absolutely!

As one study published in 2005 by the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology found, unvaccinated children suffer lower rates of asthma and allergies than vaccinated children.

Allergies and asthma can severely diminish quality of life and work productivity, and should not be ignored. So when we discuss the overuse of vaccinations, autism is not the only health hazard worthy of note and serious consideration.

Contrary to Popular Belief, Avoiding Vaccinations is Not a Sign of Ignorance

As illustrated in this Clarion Ledger article, the topic of vaccinations is often emotional for both sides of the camp. People who have not done their research are quick to say that it is highly irresponsible and foolish to avoid vaccinations. However, this is quite the oxymoron because mothers with college educations and higher incomes are actually LESS likely to vaccinate their children than those with less education.

One 2006 study published in the American Journal of Public Health found that children whose mothers have less than a high school education are 16 percent more likely to have received vaccinations than toddlers whose mothers have graduated college.

Of course, anyone, regardless of education level or income, is capable of making an educated decision about whether or not to vaccinate their children. But college-educated women are perhaps more likely to have read articles questioning vaccine safety -- or at least to have heard about such controversies.

The trend toward not vaccinating has been growing for some time now. Close to 70 percent of physicians say that the number of concerns from parents have increased significantly in recent years.

And rightfully so.

Vaccines given to newborns contain an array of potentially toxic chemicals including:

  • Formaldehyde
  • Aluminum phosphate (toxic and carcinogenic)
  • Antibiotics
  • Phenols (corrosive to skin and toxic)
  • Live viruses and various other components

The Insanity of the Recommended Childhood Immunization Schedule

I published Dr. Donald Miller's excellent article, A User-Friendly Vaccination Schedule in 2004. At that time, 12 different vaccines were given to children before they reached the age of two.

As of 2008, the Recommended Childhood Immunization Schedule put out by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), that number has risen to 14 in the first 24 months, plus the meningococcal vaccine, which is to be administered between the age of two and six.

Infants and toddlers aged 0 to 6 years of age are now given vaccines to prevent the following diseases:

Hepatitis B

Rotavirus

Hepatitis A

Measles

Diphtheria

Mumps

Tetanus (lockjaw)

Rubella (German measles)

Pertussis (whooping cough)

Varicella (chickenpox)

Polio

Meningococcal

Pneumococcal infections

Influenza (yearly flu shots)

Hemophilus influenzae type b infections

If your child is vaccinated according to the CDC's recommended schedule, by the time your child starts kindergarten he or she will have received 48 doses of 14 vaccines.  Of these, 36 doses will be given during the first 18 months of life.

And now consider this: one vaccine injected into a 13-pound, two-month old infant is equivalent to 10 doses of the same in a 130-pound adult. Where is the common sense in these guidelines?

Would any adult concede to being injected with 360 doses of vaccines within a couple of years’ span; equal to one injection every other day for two years?

Public health officials have NEVER proven that it is indeed safe to inject this number and volume of vaccines into infants. What's more, they cannot explain why, concurrent with an increasing number of vaccinations, there has been an explosion of neurological and immune system disorders in American children.

There are Other Options

As the trends indicate, many parents are so concerned about the potential dangers of overloading their children with this massive load of vaccines that they resort to home schooling. However, not all parents have the ability to make that type of commitment.

Fortunately, if you are unable to home school, you still have other options.

As I’ve stated before, I’m not anti-vaccine, but rather pro-vaccine safety. I also believe it is extremely important to have the right to choose; to be allowed to make informed consent decisions about what you want to inject into your child, and yourself, and when.

Dr. Donald Miller is a cardiac surgeon and Professor of Surgery at the University of Washington in Seattle and a member of Doctors for Disaster Preparedness. His more sensible vaccination schedule, which I published back in 2004, is worthy of being revisited at this time.

His guidelines can help you devise a more appropriate vaccination plan for your child – a schedule that takes the best interests of your child into consideration rather than what biased government planners cite as being best for society. His is a far better approach than the "one-size-fits-all" dogma foisted on Americans by the CDC panel.

Devising a Sensible Vaccination Plan for Your Child

Your brain has its own specialized immune system, separate from that of the rest of your body. When you are vaccinated, specialized immune cells in your brain, the microglia, become activated.

Multiple vaccinations spaced close together over-stimulate the microglia, causing them to release a variety of toxic elements -- cytokines, chemokines, excitotoxins, proteases, complement, free radicals -- that damage brain cells and their synaptic connections. (The damage caused by these toxic substances is sometimes referred to as "bystander injury.")

In humans, the most rapid period of brain development begins in the third trimester and continues over the first two years. (By then, brain development is 80 percent complete.)

From a risk-benefit perspective, there is little doubt that the risk of neurological and autoimmune diseases from vaccinations at this stage far outweigh the benefits of avoiding the childhood infections that they (supposedly) prevent. (One exception is the hepatitis B vaccine, IF the mother tests positive for hepatitis B.)

As a more sensible, “user-friendly” vaccination schedule, Dr. Miller advises the following:

    1. No vaccinations until your child is two years old.
    2. No vaccines that contain thimerosal (mercury).
    3. No live virus vaccines.
    4. The following vaccines can be given one at a time (not as a combination vaccine), every six months, beginning at age 2:
      •  Pertussis (acellular, not whole cell)
      •  Diphtheria
      •  Tetanus
      •   Polio (the Salk vaccine, cultured in human cells)

And that would be pretty much it as far as vaccinations. Your pediatrician will not like this schedule, but if you have reviewed the evidence and still feel your child should be inoculated to a certain degree, this is a far safer alternative to the standard vaccination schedule.

How to Avoid the Vaccinations You Don’t Want

Remember, although exemptions for religious beliefs are becoming harder to obtain in some states like New York. All 50 states have vaccination requirements but all states provide exemptions for medical reasons while 48 states allow exemptions for sincerely held  religious beliefs. Another 18 states allow parents to opt out for personal, conscientious or philosophical beliefs as well.

Mississippi and West Virginia only allow exemptions for medical reasons. In some states medical exemptions written by a licensed M.D. or D.O. must conform to CDC contraindication guidelines or public health officials will challenge them.

Maryland, despite their handling of the issue, also still offers the right to opt out for religious beliefs. My previous article, How To Legally Avoid Unwanted Immunizations Of All Kinds, spells out how you go about practicing this right.

Remember, you need to educate yourself on the dangers of the vaccines that your doctor or pediatrician insists on administering., as well as the vaccine laws in your state.

I have numerous articles detailing the dangers of various vaccines on this site, and you have the entire internet at your disposal in addition to what I have documented through the years.

There is also an entire chapter in my book Take Control of Your Health devoted to this very topic, including what you should know before vaccinating, and what to do if you decide not to.

Support the NVIC -- Support Vaccine Safety Reform

The National Vaccine Information Center (NVIC) is the American vaccine safety watchdog. They are currently being flooded with vaccine reaction reports and parents reporting that their vaccine exemptions are being pulled or they can't get one. I highly recommend you make a donation to the NVIC to help support them in their efforts to raise awareness about these vital issues and implement vaccine safety reform. Funds are urgently needed to:

  1. Launch a national education campaign about vaccine risks and wellness alternatives to vaccination
  2. Continue to work for vaccine freedom - protect and expand state vaccine exemption laws
  3. Expand counseling services for parents reporting vaccine reactions, injuries and deaths
  4. Hold the International Public Conference on Vaccination Oct. 2-4, 2009 in Washington, D.C.
  5. Educate Congress about the need to separate out the vaccine safety monitoring mechanism from federal health agencies responsible for developing, regulating, making policy for and promoting mass use of vaccines, and make the agency reportable to Congress

Homeschooling is much better for kids anyway.  It keeps them out of the government INDOCTRINATION centers. : - ) Homeschooling develops independent thinking vs. group thinking and peer dependency.

Not to mention the price in tax dollars:
According to the Cato Institute it costs an average of $6.900 a year
per student for public education - or $89,700 and 13 years to
teach your child basic math and English skills, in exchange for which
you get a diploma that counts for little to nothing in the end. (you can still go to
college without one - I did)
http://www.cato.org/pubs/briefs/bp-025.html

And the figure is as high as $25,000 per student at DC public schools
http://www.cato-at-liberty.org/2008/04/07/the-real-cost-of-public-schools/

It cost $1,600 a year to send my daughter to a private elementary school

and the baseline point, BeeGirl, is that all that money is extracted, by force (the fraud part just makes it go down the craw easier - for some people, anyway)....

I have never "owned" real property here (not that anyone else actually does, either) for this very reason. But you know, my lease payments cover the landlord's PITI - so I am dragooned anyway.....

gov "education" is just another insatiable cartel.....

...Beegirl, my friend, costs in the states are far cheaper than up here for private schooling...

...One thing that frosted my giblets was having to have mandatory vaccinations in University.....had to have them or couldn't proceed with my career path.  I was never sicker than in those years....

Sweet M - she went to a Lutheran school (they didn't insist she convert) which was not the ideal solution, (I wasn't aware of homeschooling at the time) but affordable. She was still required to have vaccinations.
I heard an ad on the radio today saying that if your business has ten or more employees, this particular pharmacy will come to you to give flu shots.

Beegirl,

Flu vaccines are all delivered to most facilities and doctor's offices at this point.  Campaigns rage on every TV and radio station daily, and every billboard has flu shot promotions plastered all over them...

...mandatory employee flu shots have not arrived in Canada, but I know employers who offer substantial cash and prize incentives (and even paid days off) to their employees who get the flu shot.  It's done on a lottery basis....last year there was everything from giant fruit and candy baskets, to a weekend a the spa...

...hmmm, I can hear it now..."...sorry boss, can't use that spa prize...I'm at home sick as a dog with , uh, the flu....!"

Stoic, have you seen Zeitgeist: Addendum yet? Your post just reminded me of it. I feel my education is growing with everything I watch and read at the moment. Thanks guys.

As for the flu vax - I'm sick of seeing these silly NHS adverts on every UK site I visit at the  moment it seems. "If you knew how serious the flu was, you'd get the jab". Ha! More like 'I know how serious the flu is, which is why I'll avoid the jab like the plague it is'!

I did see 'addendum' Dizzy. I did not see the prescription proposed therein coming (basis 'zeitgeist'). It is literally no prescription at all. So I was disappointed. How did my post (Winston Smith was here - my post hase been memory holed...) remind you of it?

Fraudulent money, nobody owning anything... I've not seen parts three or four of it yet (ran out of time sadly, will watch at the weekend), but the first two have stuck in my mind as the first <real> explanation of the monetary/economical system I've seen, so I've been ruminating over it all a bit the last few days. :-)

BeeGirl that cost is crazy!  It cost me $185 a month (or about $1700 a year) just to give my daughter 10 hours of preschool each week.  It was a quality preschool with 8 children and 2 teachers per classroom, and they taught most of the kids to read (without pressuring them).

I would love to have sent them to private school instead of public, but that would have been about 70% of our takehome income (for just one child).

I agree with all the positive things said about homeschooling - but it's not for everyone.  It doesn't just depend on the child, it needs a parent that is willing (and gifted enough) to provide more in depth teaching.  For me, that is not one of my skills.

So my kids go to public school, and I do my best to counter conventional thinking at home.

The article makes it sound like measles is a deadly disease.  Most of my generation survived measles with no detrimental after-effects.  (And possibly our immune systems were even strengthened?)

I read another study though that said outbreaks more often occur among public schooled children because the vaccines wear off after a few years.

The problem with kids getting these "horrible" diseases is that their parents often must take time off from work to care for them. It's more about "lost productivity" than health. That was the reasoning behind the chicken pox vaccine.
And you're right about the vaccines wearing off by the time kids reach young adulthood and many of the childhood diseases are much worse in adults.

PeaceBlessings, it depends on the age of the child. My son caught measles from his older sister when he was 9 months old, a dangerous age. He was given gamma globulin (whatever THAT is) and only had about 3 red lumps.I certainly thought I was doing the right thing at the time - this was nearly 40 years ago.

He was, and still is, very healthy.

But of course, why would Big Pharma cure any disease?  If they stretch things out such as cancer, diabetes, ashtma, and the like it means big dollars, and the people live in fear.  So next we are looking for a durg to treat our paranoia.  Otherwise Big Pharma would go broke, God forbid.

In medical school, we are learning plenty of immunology.  To answer Julieanne's curiosity in the post following this one, gamma globulin is, very basically, the flag that the human body tags a bug with to label it for death.  Adults have it, but it takes a good two years to fully develop an immune system with "IgG antibodies" in children.  Those are the ones you need for many infectious diseases that we currently vaccinate before 2 years old.  The point of a vaccine is to teach the body what a bug looks like - like giving a hound dog the scent to hunt with.  Without the ability to produce the correct flags, it makes you wonder why we pump in vaccines before there's a hound dog around.  Know what I mean?  Instead, vaccines can activate IgE antibodies - flags that are good for parasites and allergies... allergies... huh, say, isn't there a strong relationship between allergies, eczema, asthma and epilepsy?  Yes, yes I believe there is.  There's all sorts of things we DON'T KNOW - let's shoot up and see what happens.

Personally, I am not vaccinating my children, but as a doctor must do my best to remain unbiased because it is ultimately the patient's decision.  It's their life & I won't judge based on my family choices.  Maybe my kid would die of an infectious disease - possible - or maybe she'd get a shot that messed her up for life - also possible.

Allowing the government to rule your healthcare decisions is giving them the trust you would give God.  Requiring people to inject substances into their bodies assumes the US population is too stupid to exist on their own.

PeaceBlessings, while I'm unsure if (as you suggest) it's because the vaccines 'ear off', there is indeed evidence that the vaccianted can and do contract the disease they've been vaccinated against. I'm a case in point myself. I was vaccinated against measles and I got measles.

(To which pro-vaccine folk might say "ah but that was s different strain of measles". To which I would say "ah so you're saying that I now need to be vaccinated against every single strain of every single disease; how exactly do you propose to do that if they keep mutating all the time?").

Regarding possibly strengthening immune system, I'm inclined to agree. And it may do more than just that as children seem to enter a growth spurt after infection.

This might have been intuitively known by parents who brought their children to parties in an ill child's house a few generations ago. The express purpose of which was to expose children who hadn't had the disease so that they could get the illness over with - and get on with growing up!

It is unbelievable to me how uninformed the general public is about what is going on with vaccinations in America. Young mothers are like sheep being lead to slaugher with their precious young babies. Their right to a healthy life and

NOT STEALING THEIR BIRTHRIGHT.

Read and educate yourself or those that you love. I had started studying vaccinations within the last 2 years and what I found assounded me.

I started with the book by Eusace Mullins, Murder by Injection. (my state Colorado has one copy of this in the public library system)

I was told about the dumbing down of American starting with the children in the

publice school system. Finally I became a believer on this. Put DUMBING DOWN

OF AMERICA in a You-tube or Google search and you will come up with a movie

by the woman that headed this up for the gov.

This really hits close to home for me. I have a grandson that just last year

in the 3rd grade was dignosed with full diabetes. There is no history of this

horrible disease in either side of the family!!

Just in the last few days another case of autisim from a friend of mine whose

grandson has it. It too is from vaccinations.

Thank you Dr. Mercola for posting this video.

I've homeschool for about 15 years.  i wouldn't have it any other way.  You can personalize each child's curriculum to fit them and their learning style.

You have time for the physical activity that you want them to do....mine have taken martial arts and soccer.  There are also opportunities to have group classes with other homeschoolers and go on field trips together.  There is plenty of socialization done, but you pick those you want them to socialize with.

There are opportunites to dual enroll with your local community college as they get older.

And...some of mine have test scores about double what their public school peers have.

*All* of your statements are spot on and reflect the home schooling families in our county, which is very large group.

Five of our six children have never darkened the door of a public school and I pray it remains that way. We have extreme chemical sensitivities and allergies, so vaccine avoidance was a major consideration in our decision to homeschool. If you are concerned about "socialization," please don't be. Children aren't born in litters, nor should they be raised and educated in the age-segregated society of a school. Children are born into families with older people, younger people, babies, and the elderly all being part (if they are extremely blessed) of their daily interactions. The best way to learn about life is to live it. Read real books, not textbooks, play in the mud, chase a butterfly, imagine pictures in the clouds, and discuss important issues with as many people as possible.

Today is Veteran's Day. We are going to discuss what that means and honor those who served by visiting our local VA hospital. I'll bet this is a lesson that sticks with my children years beyond reading about it in a history textbook.

My favorite quote on education comes from William Butler Yeats: "Education is not the filling of a bucket, but the lighting of a fire."
