Are You Sleeping in a Dangerous, Electrically Polluted Bedroom?

Vicki Warren is the program director for the International Institute for Bau-Biologie & Ecology (IBE). For more details on this exciting and growing movement, see How Bau-Biologie Can Keep You and Your Home Healthy.
DR. MERCOLA'S COMMENT:

I decided to reverse the order here for a very important reason, in that I am announcing a new column on this site, which will be directed toward educating you about the dangers of the building that you live in, and what you can do to correct it.

Many of you may know that I started my medical practice just outside of Chicago in 1985. After 23 years in the same location, we will be moving to a new, state of the art office building.

Since environmental health is a concern of mine, the building will not only be LEED certified but it will likely have platinum certification, which is virtually never awarded.

In the process of seeking to create the healthiest office possible, my consultations led me to seriously consider Bau Biology (German for "Building Biology") as a tool to improve the health of the environment. While LEED is great, it tends to focus on the environment.  Whereas Bau Biology, like its name suggests, focuses more on human health.

Germans are famous for their precision and attention to detail and they did not fail us here. They have developed an incredible accumulation of knowledge that I can assure you, only a VERY small fraction of those in the building industry are even remotely aware of. There is a group in North America who has translated and expanded the German research to implement these techniques in other countries. The Institute for Bau-Biologie & Ecology (IBE) is dedicated to educating folks on how to create healthy indoor environments.

This includes the LEED community. Fortunately, my involvement will likely catalyze a communication between these two important bodies so we can take building health in the United States to the next level. After all, if you spend so much of your time indoors, how can you possibly be healthy if you are living in a toxic environment?

I hope to have at least one article a week devoted to this CRUCIAL health topic, because if you don’t understand these principles, you could be living in a time bomb.

Electro-Pollution in Your Bedroom

The human body is an amazing, self-rejuvenating entity that has the ability to repair itself while it sleeps. This is accomplished with its own, internal electrical system that functions with very weak electrical impulses. Electrical impulses are generated by your brain and are used for intercellular communication. This is possible because your body is composed mainly of water with a high mineral content making it highly electrically conductive.

Cells know when to divide by vibrating. Brain cells, nerve cells, bone cells, all vibrate at different rates in order to communicate with one another. Unfortunately, our bodies act like tuning forks. When you vibrate a tuning fork (external electrical influence), any turning fork (like our body) in its vicinity will start vibrating at the same frequency or rate, and therefore will be confused as to how fast to grow.1

In the typical sleeping area, electrical exposure from external sources (live electrical wiring in ceilings, walls and floors) is thousands of times stronger than your body’s own electrical system. Long-term exposure to these high-level electric fields can impair your body’s ability to communicate within itself, and impact health. The average person spends approximately one-third of their life sleeping.

Doesn’t it make sense to reduce exposure to electric fields in our sleeping areas?

The 2008 Building Biology Conference: Building the Way Nature Intended

Join the international movement of individuals who are rebuilding the built environment into one that nurtures and restores human life.

Some people develop symptoms when they experience long-term exposure, especially at night, to elevated levels of electricity, such as:

  • Headaches
  • Hyperactivity
  • Nightmares
  • Depression and fatigue
  • Eyestrain
  • Muscle cramps

Biological problems associated with electromagnetic stressors fall into two major categories:2

1. Brain (behavioral abnormalities, learning disabilities, altered bio-cycles and stress responses)

2. Growing tissue (embryos, genetics and cancer)

Research has shown that for a body to properly detoxify during sleep it must be alkaline, and high electromagnetic fields lead to acidity. This is especially true for heavy metal detoxification.3

5 Initial Steps to Create a Sleeping Sanctuary

1. Use battery devices near bed.

Research has shown that exposure to high magnetic fields while sleeping can cause severe long-term illness. Many electric clocks produce high magnetic fields.

2. Turn off bedroom-affecting circuits.

A restful sleep is necessary for health and a strong immune system. Electric fields affect the bio-communication system, keeping you from sleeping soundly.

3. Eliminate or shield from radio frequency (RF).

Radio frequency signals from portable phones, cell phones, and wireless devices have been shown to interfere with your body’s immune system.

4. Use beds without metal.

Metal frames and metal box springs can amplify and distort the earth’s natural magnetic field, which can lead to a non-restful sleep. Use natural materials.

5. Make sure there are no elevated magnetic fields.

Magnetic fields from appliances and building wiring can penetrate walls into a bedroom and disrupt your body’s communication system. (<0.2milligauss)

We use to have a cordless phone and an alarm clock near out heads on our night stands and could not sleep well, since removing them and my wife and I sleep much better...

PS - Electrical blankets should be avoided at all cost...

Yes, electric blankets gave me night terrors as a teenager.  I noticed the correlation when I was 13 or 14 (back in 1983 or 4).

It was easy to fix...just use an extra blanket or two!

...and I have a pewter bed--I wonder if there's something I can do to help negate the negative energy emanating from my bed (can't afford to buy a new one!).  Suggestions, anyone?

Sell your metal frame on ebay and sleep with the mattress on the floor - doesn't do much for the style of your bedroom, but it gets rid of bedframe worries.  However, if you're the type of person who stores unused items, boxes etc under your bed, you'll have to decant the stuff somewhere else ;-). Or maybe get a secondhand wooden frame when you find one at the price you want - even if they're bashed or not the style you want, they look great painted (with an eco paint, if your budget will stretch).

I hope it isn't an heirloom!  I recommend doing what the Japanese do, with a few precautions.  I don't know if they sell actual futons in America.  I know there was futon furniture, but I think it is a different thing, though based on the cotton-stuffed mattress (futon) the Japanese spread out on the floor each night to sleep on.  We normally use two, they're an inch and a half thick each, with a buckwheat chaff pillow (really comfortable) and heavy blankets.  (It's cold here.  In fact, this year, we pitched a tent in our "bed corner" and put the futons in that.  Good way to save energy.)  Once a week, we take the futons out to air and whack the dust off them.  This is a great advantage over a bed!  One thing you must watch out for, however, if you are on a floor with a light fixture directly below you, is to arrange your futon so it is not directly over the light.  If you can ascertain the light is off, then no problem, but if it is neighbors, it could be a real problem.  I'll write more on my experiences with that below.

Jenny I'm afraid I am very suspicious of products that do not reduce emf, but claim to protect the wearer. I have just discovered that my daughter has been sleeping in 260v/m electical fields for 8 years. I'm going with the only proven solution ;)

There is more truth to this than most people realize.  "The Body Electric" is a good starting place to read about electromagnetic energy.

Mary that book is one of the best ever written. If everyone could read it the world would be a better place.

I agree with you about "The Body Electric."  Robert O. Becker has several other carefully researched books as well.  I got my start with "Microwaving the Planet," by Arthur Firstenberg.  (Should be M.D., but his condition forced him to quit in his last year of medical school!)  He is meticulous, a great writer.  Dr. Gerald Goldberg is also very good in "Would you put your head in a microwave oven?"  These are just off the top of my head, so I might have spelling or other details wrong.  On-line, have a look at the Bioinitiative:  www.bioinitiative.org  This was published just last year.  For anyone aware of health damage to themselves or friends/family from EMF, check out the Manual for ES (Technical Guide):  www.feb.se/FEB/feb_techman.html

One has to be very careful if one is allergic and chemically sensitive.  I can tolerate metal bed much better than wood and the chemical sealants that are on it.  Try out a wood bed of the type you will be purchasing before you actually do purchase and dump your old bed. I actually gave away my old mattress to my cousin and had to get it back after I was allergic to the 1000 dollar mattress that was organic.

I appreciate Dr. Mercola educating us about this.  I wasn't aware that it was a problem until I met a girl that was so sensitive that she can't stay in church once they turn the sound system on and she can't sleep with any electrical things working in her bedroom.   She has burning mouth syndrome.  I wish I understood more about that.  The only time she feels truly comfortable is at the beach.

comfortable at the beach is a tip off...neg ions are plentiful there...you might want to tell her to investigate ionizers(which create neg ions)....positive ions (created by electricity too) are rampant in society today and may be part of the cause of her plight...she might also want to investigate the Qlink...I personally wear one to combat emf's and it's the best investment I ever made!
