More synthetic toxic sweetener approved by the FDA.
3 months! What a joke the FDA has become. How much does it cost to get FDA approval?
After eliminating corn, soy beans, wheat, all dairy except for some organic butter, and cooking my own organic foods at home from scratch, I was feeling fresh and vigorous. My eyesight was close to 20/20. My mind was clear and my thinking increasingly lucid.
Still I didn't realize that my diet was nearly 100% responsible for the rejuvenation until circumstances caused me to rely on "normal", non-organic foods for less than a week. Right away I put on a few pounds which appeared to be bloat. I could no longer read the fine print. And flavors resembling MSG remained in my mouth all the time. Not unpleasant, but somehow I was feeling cravings all the time, even it I ate only one meal a day.
This time the message has come through again, loud and clear! The price of eating "normal" foods is just too high, for the most part. I believe I can handle restaurant foods, or dinner with friends every week or two, but now I am aware that it takes around three days to recover. So as a precaution, going off the wagon (food-wise) more than once a week is not worth the high price!
I'm now convinced that MSG and other savory chemical flavorings, as well as preservatives, pesticides, and other processing additives, build up in the body and cause bloating, weight gain, and constant cravings that drive us to over-eat.
I've lost a great deal of weight through diet and exercise (95 lbs), so, though I'm finally the same size I was as a freshman in high school, my natural metabolism has not changed. If I didn't stay the course, I'd end up like Oprah. Hope this helps!
Right on JayPatrick........hopefully by our quiet, food market boycott, we can continue to exert an influence over these pervasive, poisonous practices. Back in the late '50s I used to stand in line, along with several others, outside on the sidewalk, in order to get a seat inside and have a filet mignon, in a very small restaurant in Inglewood, CA, owned by a very nice Asian guy, who would sprinkle handfulls of white salt-like crystals on each side of the meat as he cooked it on the grill. I never suspected anything and knew nothing of anything, other than it being some type of chef's secret - little did I know!
They other night I was in a restaurant (am vegan now) and happened to notice a cook doing the same thing on each side of the meat. I should have asked the waitress if they used MSG. Research has proven that MSG in all its different forms and names, makes rats (and us) fat. No doubt though, those steaks sure were delicious..........take care, stay healthy, be Happy
You are so right! So many people have perverted their taste buds to the point where they are incapable of appreciating the intrinsic goodness of real foods. In my experience, this can be reversed but I wonder if there is a point of no return.
What I don't understand is how food manufacturers are allowed to list ingredients as 'natural' or 'artificial flavors' but never state what these vague 'flavors' consist of.
I think there are enough of us out there boycotting MSG products that we've already started causing research on new products. Several companies are trying to find alternatives to MSG and introducing new poisons to us at an alarming rate. Enough people will get tired of being tired and sick and overweight that chemical companies will eventually get the idea. We do have to stand together. I can't eat MSG or I get migranes. I wont buy them for my family and I tell people around me what effects they have. Spreading the word about these things is the only way to protect ourselves from a slow poisonous death.
Dr. Mercola writes: And these chemical compounds are NOT required to be listed separately on food labels; they are simply grouped into the general category of "artificial flavors." So if you pick up a processed food that has “no MSG,” “less sugar,” or “reduced sodium” it may very well also contain Senomyx’s chemicals, and you’ll have no way of knowing.
ALAN: The simple answer is to never buy anything with "artificial ingredients" in it to begin with.
Reverend Alan:
The problem with this is MSG is often grouped and labeled as "natural flavor." I say, if it does not actually name a product (i.e. carrots, salt, pepper) then don't buy it. But then, most spices and herbs are also grouped and labeled "natural flavor or spices." You have to make your own broth from whole organic/natural vegetables/meats, and do not buy anything in a box.
The FDA, heavily lobbied by large food corporations, has allowed any ingredient on any label to be up to 90% MSG or other flavor adjusting chemical, and only 10% something the company might be willing to divulge to a consumer.
There ARE numerous flavor enhancers in foods.
One is asesulfame potassium [a.k.a. acesulfame K; ACE K, etc.]
This chemical, eaten daily, will knock the wits out of the immune system, causing the body to become vulnerable to whatever germs might be around.
There are many others; what bad things they do in the body depends on the chemistry of the additive.
It is up to US to lobby the FDA and government so heavily, it will force the FDA to become accountable and responsible for people's health.
It took many years, and 10's of thousands of letters, before the FDA banned formaldehyde from carpeting [it took 1000 letters before they counted "one" complaint].
It will take even more to turn this food boat around, since there is so much money in the food business, in the medical / pharmaceutical industries, etc., all with vested interests in keeping people sick and dying.
That all these businesses are intertwined, and most are faltering due to the economy no longer tolerating such vast greed, is to our favor for correcting this mess. But it does take concerted, long-term effort by many to achieve.
It is important to communicate in terms of quantifiable, qualifiable facts.
The FDA does not require flavor adjusting or flavor enhancing ingredients to be labeled "artificial".
These can be included [up to 90% of any labeled ingredient] in "natural flavors", "spices", "meat and yeast extracts", ANYTHING else can contain flavor adjuster chemicals--can be 90% of those, in fact....
In order to conceal the flavor adjusting chemicals and call the ingredient something else, it only has to have 10% of something the company might be OK telling anyone about.
That's the game.
Write to the FDA. Inundate them with complaints about food additives.
Tell your doctors, so it gets documented in medical records, when you get sick after eating something with flavor adjusting chemicals in it, and when you eat foods that contain genetically engineered produce.
Flood the FDA with complaints, including copies of the medical reports.
FDA has already gone on record many years back, saying:
"If no one complains enough, with enough written documents, there is no problem!"
It takes 1000 letters [1000 different people] of complaint about the same problem, before it gets counted as a single complaint.
Hi Anathema.
Germanic New Medicine has identified, that a female on birth control or past menopause responds biologically like a male. This is one of the reasons, that the Health study of HRT had to be curtailed, because the women were shown to be more susceptible to suffer heart attacks. You seem to also have a differing response with your taste buds! Interesting!
Normally viable females cannot suffer heart attacks, because the are using their 'left brain hemispheres' primarily in their everyday tasks and a so called territorial biological conflict is suffered by the female as a 'nest conflict' Impacting on the left hemisphere. The 'heart beat centre' is situated in the right brain hemisphere however and right handed males suffer heart attacks in the healing phase of a "territorial biological conflict". In the healing crisis, the oedema in the brain is being squeezed out, so that the fluid floods the heart beat centre and the signal cannot reach the heart, causing a heart attack. By the way, left handed males do not suffer heart attacks either!
Anathema, very interesting insight you've shared there, thank you. It might also be interesting to alongside (or maybe underpinning perhaps?) the hormonal factors you've indentified, ponder the possible role of zinc.
Zine is important in our sense of smell and (I believe) also our sense of taste. It could very well be that the others you refer to are not absorbing/retaining enough zinc from their diets and their senses are consequently dulled. Meanwhile you are getting and holding onto enough to allow your senses of taste and smell to function at the levels you speak of - levels which perhaps we may actually be meant to function at!
You may operate at these levels until you take birth control, upon which you start losing zinc as your body struggles to deal with the chances induced.
Am not saying this is actually the case of course... but just it's another factor to consider and may help explain the difference between your senses and those of the people around you.
This doesn't sound crazy to me at all. In fact, I think it answers a question that I've had. Birth-control pills contain estrogen, so perhaps estrogen interacts with glutamuate, and makes glutamate effects worse. Since fat cells also create estrogen, perhaps this explains why glutamate seems to have a more damaging (and fattening) effect on people that are already overweight, while those who are skinny (as I once was) can seemingly eat MSG containing foods with impunity. Just some speculation.
DLARAH:
Can you tell us why left-handed males do not suffer heart attacks? Do you have a source for the information you provide?
For those of you who are astonished that the declaration deeming this ingredient safe was only a mere 3-month long study on rats, were you aware of how little research went into cell phones before they were released to the public in such large numbers?
Also, were you aware of how little research went into assessing the dangers of the radiation coming from the cell phone towers and antennas themselves?
Short-term exposure was all that was tested.
My ex-husband had a brain tumor removed in 2007 - a heavy cell phone user. I have a brain infection (chronic Lyme) - a heavy cordless phone user. My sister's cat has some problem with it's spinal cord that appeared precisely when a cell phone tower was installed pretty much in her backyard.
I am much more worried about radiation dangers than food ingredients, but only because I have at least some control over what I eat - I can buy only whole foods and be okay. The amount of radiation I'm subjected to though is another ballgame.
CEM:
Just goes to show how reckless we become when there is a dollar to be made. "It is not in my backyard, so why should I care? As long as my investments pay off, people are not my concern." Most of Industry, like the Tabacco Industry are aware of the dangers, they just happen not to care. Just as those we send to Congress to represent our voice, do not care as long as someone pays for their next election.
MSG inflames the tongue,(identified with the Synchrometer, a resonance comparison device). The inflamed tongue allows easy entry to the cancer nucleus and cancer complex for a malignancy to start.. The Cure and Prevention of All Cancers H R Clark, PhD ND. There are numerous side effects of MSG, the most serious is irregular heartbeat and cardiac arrest from that, ie DEATH. I had the irregulat heatrtz beat, but I beat the death. MSG overdose on cChinese dumplings. Took six months to stabilize. Enjoy your cube soups, bacon and all the other man-mangled -product at your own risk. If you dont need the risk, google all the many pseudonyms under which MSG hides, ie natural flavouring, etc
Only three months? Well, look at the companies lining up for the latest chemical additives to our foods on our grocers shelves, which already have most of the nutrition processed out and additives processed in to enhance flavor, texture and shelflife.
This reminds me of the old adage: I f something is not found in nature there is a very strong chance that it will not be a good idea to introduce it into our bodies.
There are some very healthy alternatives to the synthetic umami flavor of MSG including vine ripened tomatoes, aged cheese and mushrooms. Mushrooms in particular are very rich sources of umami flavor. The umami flavor in mushrooms is much more nuanced and balanced than that provided by synthetic MSG. Mushrooms contain both basic umami flavor and also synergizing umami flavor, an additional umami flavor dimension that has recently been elucidated. The Umami flavor in mushrooms, combined with their content of antioxidants, beta glucans (immunomodulators), niacin, Vitamins B1 and B2, Vitamin D (if the mushrooms are exposed to sunlight or UV light), selenium, potassium and dietary fiber make them a true superfood.
I HAVE LEARNED A WEALTH OF KNOWLEDGE... BOY, ALL I CAN SAY IS A TRULY, HEARTFELT, THANK YOU
And stevia is still considered "Iffy"?
Our government is so in the pocket of big business. With our graduated tax system (punish the rich) it should be obvious to all, but logic is lacking in this country.
These companies are uber profitable. The more profitable you are, the more the government takes.
So, why would they not bend over backwards to approve new income streams from companies experiencing the highest tax rate and paying the highest taxes?
The reason they don't seem to care about us? Most of us don't pay federal income tax. Over 40% of us pay NOTHING and another 10-20% are actually paid by the government.
After discovering that it is nearly impossible to find out WHERE a processed food is made, I have been removing them from my home. (to my husband's grand displeasure). If China would poison their own children, why would we be so naive to believe they would not poison mine? (please watch your canned goods, "distributed by" does NOT mean "manufactured by" aka, all WalMart brand canned goods-WalMart won't even tell you where their food is processed).
We are being intentionally poisoned to accomplish the following: Tax revenue (from the food company, the chemical company and then the pharmaceutical company and the AMA--all in the highest tax brackets). Lose-lose for us. Win-win for the government.
Until we realize that the Dem vs Rep and class wars are intentionally manufactured by our elected officials to keep us firmly divided, this will continue on unabated. The increased tax dollars and profits are directly from the blood of us citizens. America we no longer are.
My garden will be huge this year. I just wish my husband would help.
TialsW: You mentiioned getting your candida under control. How did you accomplish this? I have a relative dealing with this issue and would like to pass along helpful information. Thanks.
If faulty memory serves me right, there is a research finding written up somewhere that says that rats fed MSG get fat..........look at most all of us (including me), we're getting fat, moreso all the time!...............
Another thing, there are many pseudonyms, euphemisms, and disguised label-lingo, that hide the presence of MSG in prepared, processed food products, on the market shelves - including our favorites.
Hence, the ability to get away with saying, "No MSG". Food companies and restaurants must not be aware of this subterfuge - but we can be, and we can vote it down by not buying it. Google MSG and check the sites until you get one that spells out all the other aliases it uses...................health and happiness to us all........
MSG makes me sick.... as soon as I eat something that has MSG in it my body knows it. I read all ingredients before I buy something and if it has any preservatives in it I don't buy it. I prefer to eat at home and know what I am eating.
No processed foods, yucky!
The FDA is one of the most corrupt branches of the US government. To our detriment they are bought by mega corporations - food and pharma.
Ayurveda, the ancient health system of India, identifies a fifth taste of astringent. It produces a drying sensation and is found in beans, some types of fruit, and spices such as turmeric. This seems to be different from umami. Indian cooking aims to balance the five Ayurvedic tastes, and in my opinion this is largely responsible for Indian food having such a satisfying effect, even in small amounts.
Very scary stuff. I'm completely free of processed-free glutamic acid / MSG in my diet. I eat all organic or non-gmo local foods when possible and organic US foods in the winter. It's quite difficult to eliminate MSG in the processed-foods in the U.S. Truthinlabeling.org was very helpful with the micro-details. Some people are so sensitive that they react to anything cultured or fermented (yogurt, some vinegar, salami, whole olives, sour cream, sour dough breads and so on). It IS possible, however to find some pure processed foods and completely worth the time it takes to cook from scratch. Out of necessity I cut out adulterated, chemical additive & pesticide-laden and GMO foods. Now the idea of eating all yukky stuff completely creeps me out. Americans need to wake up and realize the food industry is focused on profits over human health. My fear is that all of this will dumb-down Americans and burden the health system until it breaks us. Between the nutritional hit from GMO's, the hook of unnaturally saturated "flavorful" (MSG, salt, fat, sugar) foods, the neurological damage from chemical exposure (MSG etc), the cardiovascular damage (salt, fats, transfats etc.), the organ damage (from obesity/diabetes), cancer (food dyes, etc) and so on, I think we are headed for BIG trouble. Sadly, I think MSG, especially combined with fat, salt and sugar is a cocktail which addicts many people to foods. I don't get food cravings anymore now that I'm off MSG.
Dear Dr. Mercola,
Thank you for the article about semonyx I just read. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I am glad they are doing something to replace MSG. But replacing one chemical for another. I dont know about that. So I think I will read labels even more so than I already do in the supermarket. It seems like its almost a science today to have to shop. But you are right, sticking with unprocessed, natural foods is the way to go. Keep up the fantastic work that you do. I enjoy your articles and the informative information that keeps me abreast of whats happening in the food industry. Thank you.
This devious practice of lacing our food with chemicals and not telling us about it reads like a bizarre fairy tale in which the evil witch poisons the innocent young maiden. Why does our government allow food companies to murder us in this fashion??? If the government allows big business to do this to us, perhaps the FDA should let us add rat poison to the food executives' food...
The FDA is satanic and run by nephilim/tares. Check out gorilla199 on you tube.
Thank you Kevin C. I was just going to say that :)
I hate it when the government allows comapanies to mess with our food. My son has a food allergy that is lethal. How does the government know that these new additives won't cause a lethal allergic reaction in some people? They don't know or, they figure their is a probability that it will cause illness in some people but not enough of the population to cause a major stir. I guess it's an easy decision when you don't have to worry about your child going into anaphalactic shock and dieing. It is bad enough that my son can't eat anything that doesn't have a wrapper that lists all the ingredients but, when companies are not required to even list certain ingredients he won't be able to eat any processed foods at all. I think we are screwing ourselves by messing with our food. No one knows which child will be born with a food allergy so they are hurting themselves as well.
I have heard that there were four basic tastes, and savory/salty which was connected to the taste of meat, but umami sounds like a good description as well.
I avoid MSG when I can, but find it totally ubiquitous in restaurant cooking, but less present in high end chinese restaurants and deli food.
MSG makes me sick an hour after I like foods that contain it, and I am hit by major food cravings at the same time.
I find that use of mushroom seasonings is very helpful to use when I have umami flavor cravings, since my sister gave me a variety of mushroom melange seasonings from a company called "FungusAmongUs", This seasoning makes foods savory without the use of salt.
I have noticed that my sense of taste and smell has improved since I started supplementing with zinc and selenium.
I use brazil nuts to get my selenium, but I just take one nut a day, since that is a full daily dose of that mineral, and eating a handful of brazil nuts would take an hour to eat, since shelling them is a major job.
Is there no place to voice our discontent with the "powers-that-be" (FDA) condemning us to "artificial everything" just for the almighty dollar?
Jen47, In Australia we have an organisation called 'GetUp' which operates online. They send emails on various topics, inviting you to sign a petition on whatever is the current protest. They have had a lot of success on a number of issues.
I am not in USA, and don't have the skills, but you need someone to start something like this. You have a much larger population and could be even more effective.
Any takers?
DLARAH , that is a fascinating feature you mentioned; some research reference point, would have been welcomed. About a month ago I took one of those personality type tests that measures male/female tendencies. Apparently males score on average -50 while females score on average +50 (it sounds almost like the measure from the bell curve) but my score was zero. In view of this score and of what you say I am left wondering how I might be affected healthwise. I also happen to have a tendency towards ambidexterity something that I was not aware of until my son-in-law noticed it. I use the PC mouse naturally with my left hand. I am frequently known to hold a minority viwepoint. In competition I enjoy the the struggle (or game) and do not get upset if I lose. Ball games bore me and I never harbour the need to follow the crowd like spectators! I have never doubted my sexual orientation feeling entirely male and masculine and have never had the desire to prove this yet, paradoxically, I have an appreciation of femininity and needless to say, I see beauty in the sculpture of the Three Graces. Now you have me wondering! A paradox, a paradox! "Getting to know me, getting to know all about me"!
Duparc - Just wondering if you've considered your upbringing. My husband is certainly not a guys guy(macho type). He likes beer and he plays sports, but doesn't watch sports. He is competitive but a good loser. He likes woodworking as a hobby. He is an emotional eater just like a woman - which I don't do. But my husbands dad died when he was just 10 and he was raised by all woman - his aunts lived nearby and their husbands had died too. His cousins were mostly female. So even though my husband is very much masculine, he does harbor female traits. I think some of it is temperment when we are born, and some of it is environment. As a side note, my husbands father died at 49 of a massive heart attack in their living room - he was LEFT handed. So I too wouldn't mind seeing some research from DLARAH.
helpothers, to answer your post, I was one of four children of a mixed patriarchial family. The wider family of relatives was equally as mixed although there were a few spinsters owing to the scarcity of men in the aftermath of WW1. My father died aged 76 from asbestosis. He was a journeyman joiner and worked with this material. With this exception, he probably would have lived much longer although he was a wife beater. a gambler, a drunk, a womanizer, and sought popularity, traits that I have not inherited. He was brutal to me in infancy (the only one of the family) so we never bonded. I do not regard myself as macho although this feeling comes across from others. I enjoy the company of both sexes but never seek their company. I can cope with 'small talk' only in minute doses so become easily bored in company. I have never been aware of possessing female traits, only that I have an appreciation (from a male perspective) of beauty and especially of the feminine figure and the adornments woman wear. I take an interest in how my wife dresses which seems to amaze others, but, when I am in the company of her I want to enjoy her beauty and I want to share the joy she brings me with others so jealousy is not part of my nature. I am an egalitarian and my only ambition is to do well whatever I do. Nuture may have a modifying effect on behaviour but it cannot stifle nature or one's natural traits which always come to the fore, like a plant pushing its way through soil. Throughout life I have always held a minority view and hence why DLARAH's post and this topic intersts me and, of course, that personality test! They each appear to raise more questions than they answer. Incidentally, I am 78 and in excellent health.
Sean and Anathema, Selenium is another vital element we seldom get enough of that effects our well being. After going on birth control I too gained weight, and agree it's from not feeling satisfied, but thought it was from depression and the hormonal changes associated therein. I find when I take a small amount of selenium (or eat a few handfulls of Brazil nuts) I am more satisfied with what I eat. (Baby spinich leaves and mushrooms not grown in Ohio [Ohio's soil is lacking in selinium] are also a decent source of selenium.)
I am very careful to avoid MSG and other things like it that give me a migraine. Sulfates in wine are another one. Medicines that are predominatly eliminated by the liver enhance the ability of MSG and sulfates to instigate migranes. I wonder if some people who are more sensitive to these toxins have depleated capacity of the liver to remove these toxins from the body...or might these toxins damage the livers ability to do that?
Please, please, please check your candida yeast levels.
Until I got my yeast under control I have suffered for decades with allergies (including the sulfates & msg), IBS, fatigue and depression.
Amazingly, I have been on a cleansing program specifically for yeast and within a month, I have: dropped 6 pounds, lost ALL craving for sugar/sweets, lost my allergies completely and my mood is improving.
Between mega-antibiotics and 20 years of birth control, my yeast was the most prevalent thing in my body.
No processed foods, plain and simple. God only knows what the "Alchemists" have added.
Just remember nearly 85% of what you consume at your favorite eatery, is processed, and likely full of MSG, and this new garbage. They may say so but little is from scratch these days.
Doesn't MSG dissolve into sodium and glutamate which is the ion for glutamic acid?
Because in theory, that would make MSG an extremely natural salt of glutamate and sodium, which are both very natural substances.
But I dunno, I just don't see why they would be bad unless it's a knock-off artificially produced glutamate ion.
I realize this is an old post, but here is some information I have to address this point:
