How to Find Support as a Holistic Mom

mom, baby, parentingThe journey into motherhood is a huge adjustment for many women. You enter a new world without a manual to guide you.

For me, I had a great career and was planning on returning to work. That all changed in the middle of my first pregnancy. I decided that I wanted to stay home and start a new career as a mom.

As I struggled to find my new identity in the world, I also had a hard time finding a support system that fit my values and lifestyle. I had worked for a specialty fashion retailer and traveled quite a bit. All I had to look out for was my husband and myself.

Then all of a sudden I brought home my precious baby. It was a total paradigm shift. I also experienced the overwhelming responsibility to make the world a safe and healthy place for her, and all children for that matter.

I looked into several moms groups and I just felt like the odd duck. In every conversation, I seemed to be Debbie Downer from Saturday Night Live. Warning people about toxic plastics, GMO’s, pesticides, vaccinations, cleaning products, processed food.

If I brought up herbs or homeopathy they looked at me like I was speaking a different language.

Finding the Holistic Moms Network

Then one day while reading a magazine I saw an ad for the Holistic Moms Network (HMN). I looked it up online and loved what I saw. There wasn’t one in my area, so I decided to start a local chapter. I knew there was a need, and I wanted to fill it.

The Holistic Moms Network has been such an extraordinary experience. With a national network of over 1,500 members we communicate and share stories, resources, and experiences that help us all on our individual paths.

My experience has been so validating and rewarding. When my daughter was 6 months old we decided to stop vaccinating until we learned more about the vaccines and the diseases they’re meant to treat.

Everyone in our community makes different choices, but what I value the most is the unconditional support, no matter what your choice is.

When I became pregnant with our second child I had learned so much about the birthing industry through discussions on our Holistic Moms online email loop that I knew I would be making some different choices. My first was a cesarean section because my daughter was breech. The second time around, we worked with a midwife instead, and planned on a VBAC for our son.

At 36 weeks we switched gears again and planned on a home water birth. Our son made his entrance with a splash and is a happy healthy little boy. If I were not involved with HMN with all its support and resources, I would have probably ended up with another cesarean.

Thanks to the Holistic Moms Network, I have made friends all over the country, and we help each other on many different levels. For example, when a friend and member was moving from Ohio to California and was in need of finding a babysitter, I was able to help her out in the most practical of ways. It just so happened that my cousins lived in the same town and their daughter is a Red Cross certified babysitter ...

The Holistic Moms Network is a model community for all humanity. Our members come from all walks of life -- all with different backgrounds and experiences.

We honor, value, support and respect one another. We are a family, and I thank HMN for helping me find my place as a Holistic Mom.

I know HMN can be there for you too!

Dr. Mercola's Comments:

I met Nancy Massotto, Ph.D., executive director of the Holistic Moms Network (HMN), at the NVIC Conference last year. I was very impressed with their organization, as parents who choose to raise their children holistically can benefit immensely from having a support group of like-minded parents.

HMN is dedicated to facilitating grassroots community-building throughout the United States, and is actively creating local chapters where you can connect with other parents and find resources necessary for successful parenting.

This is an excellent group whether you are new to holistic living and looking for support and encouragement, or are experienced and eager to share your knowledge.

HMN members have discovered natural remedies for their child’s asthma and fever, found the courage to have a vaginal birth after cesarean (VBAC), become educated about vaccination choice, and tried recipes for making their own non-toxic cleaners, among many other benefits.

So if you are interested in building a healthier, more sustainable future for your children, I highly recommend you become involved with an HMN chapter near you. If there is not yet a chapter in your area, you may even want to consider starting one to help grow your local holistic parenting community
