In 1980, those in the lowest taxable income bracket paid 0.1 percent (one tenth of one percent) of the nation's income tax. Those in the highest income bracket paid 64.8 percent of the bill.
Let's say the nation's income tax bill for 1980 was $100. The entire group of those who earned the least amount of income contributed $1 to the $100 owed, while the highest paid earners picked up almost $65 of the $100.
By 2005, the lowest wage earners contributed less than nothing to the $100 tax bill, and the group on the other end of the spectrum paid over $86 of the bill.
In case that sounds 'fair enough' given the income disparity of the two groups, let's look at it another way.
By combining the three groups of citizens making the least amount of income in 1980, which was 60 percent of the tax paying population, we see that this 60 percent – over half the tax-paying public – picked up only 15.1 percent of the bill.
The two highest wage-earning groups, which account for 40 percent of tax payers, picked up the remaining 85 percent of the bill.
Now let's look at 2005. The lowest three groups kick in only 0.6 percent of the tax bill, while the two highest groups pay over 99 percent of the bill.
That was 2005. It's now 2010, and the obvious question is, how can the top income-earning groups, who are also the groups providing employment, production and prosperity in this country, continue to afford this trend?
Taxes are a central focus for the upcoming elections. The sad reality is that everyone is overtaxed and the money is used very imprudently. Republicans and Democrats alike have failed us. They're now so tied up with industry and so indebted to large corporations that they have no way out.
Typically when I run an article like this I end up getting comments from readers wondering why I post political pieces. What you must realize is that politics has everything to do with health these days. And if health conscious people keep ignoring these political issues, we'll never be able to right the wrongs and turn this flawed medical paradigm around.
Today, our politicians are "owned" and controlled in large part by Big Pharma and Big Agra… The people making the decisions about food- and drug regulations and health care reform -- issues that have a very real impact on your health -- are no longer working on your behalf. Most of them are betrothed to corporate interests.
Americans, by and large, must reclaim their voice and become more involved in the political process. Many are completely out of touch with what's going on, which is also why they can't see the connections between politics and health.
Take the health care tax for example.
Penalty or Tax - What's the Difference?
Starting in 2014, unless you purchase and maintain minimum essential health care insurance coverage, you will be required to pay a penalty. Yes, for the first time ever, your government will actually fine you for refusing to buy something, whether you deem it to be a worthwhile purchase or not.
If you believe in freedom it is hard not to view this as anything but a major step backward.
As reported by the New York Times, the White House administration defends this requirement as "an exercise of the government's power to lay and collect taxes," even though it's commonly referred to as a "penalty" – again for refusing to buy something you might not be happy with…
From a business standpoint, the new healthcare bill also raises taxes, and it requires all businesses, big or small, to file 1099's for any purchase over $600. This is simply a ridiculous law added to the bill to provide the IRS with more authority and funding. For small businesses this additional rule will add yet more overhead expenses, not to mention inconvenience for absolutely no social benefit except to give the government more control and information so they can continue to abuse their power. .
The pharmaceutical industry!
In addition to levying new health care taxes, we're also going to see many of the Bush administration's tax cuts being revoked. Many families will see their taxes increase by nearly 11 percent by 2012.
But that's not all.
Americans are taxed over and over and over again, in ways you likely don't even realize. To get the full appreciation of the current state of affairs, take a look at this article by TheEconomicCollapseBlog. It lists more than 50 different kinds of taxes that Americans pay each year!
"When you add all the taxes together, a significant percentage of Americans end up paying well over 50 percent of their income in taxes of one form or another," the article states.
I can't verify the accuracy of that statement, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's a correct assessment – and that doesn't even include the new health care tax (aka "penalty" for failing to purchase health insurance).
What Do You Get for the Taxes You Pay?
Well, that's the trillion dollar question, isn't it?
The Pentagon alone spends over $700 billion a year, despite undergoing a 'massive budget cut' – a budget "cut" that amounts to increasing their budget by only one percent annually.
How is that a reduction in spending?
Any business or department that can't cut out five percent isn't looking very hard. Unfortunately, none of our government departments are really looking to become fiscally responsible. Everything is "use it or lose it" when it comes to department budgets, which typically translates to "waste it or lose it."
Everyone's Scrambling to Save the Status Quo
In order to justify their own over-bloated existence, our government is taking the stance that they can take care of you better than you can take care of yourself.
So they are trying to tell you what to eat, what you're NOT allowed to eat, who you're allowed to buy your food from, what drugs to take when you're ill, and what supplements and alternative healing methods you're not allowed to peruse instead of your prescribed medications.
This kind of power is extremely abusive.
The government is continually taking steps to create increasing amounts of regulation of your food and your health care. And by doing so, they're creating a world of large corporate favoritism and severely restricted personal freedoms.
Think I'm exaggerating?
Take the open war being waged against raw milk, for example.
Why are We Funding Armed Raids on Dairy Farmers?
The FDA officially banned interstate sales of raw milk in 1987, but it wasn't until 2006 that the military-style crackdown began. Agricultural departments in several states, with the help of the FDA, then started to raid small dairies and private coops, and this trend is increasing.
While the VAST MAJORITY of actual harm from dangerous, contaminated foods are from highly processed, mass-produced foods, only one food -- raw milk -- has been unfairly singled out and targeted by the FDA, the USDA and even the FBI as a "health risk" worthy of armed raids and crackdowns -- a food that also happens to be so low on the food-borne illness risk scale it's hardly measurable!
It's important to realize that this issue is about much more than the perceived safety of raw milk. It's about your ability, your right, to purchase and consume pure, unadulterated food.
This right is increasingly being stripped away from you.
The food safety bill will restrict your ability to buy from small farmers even more, under the guise of "consumer safety." In reality, the food safety bill is nothing but corporate favoritism – the result of massive industry lobbying. It's anti-competitive, and destroys the free market concept.
So, when going to the voting booths this year, research your candidate well.
Our government has proven time and time again that it is not fiscally responsible. It's time each and every one of us demand that our representative believes in lowering taxes, implementing budget cuts and reinforcing personal freedoms.
Is the Recession Over?
The documentary "Meltup" explains how the U.S. economy is teetering on the edge of a currency crisis that will lead either to hyperinflation or a severe deflation. The U.S. media insists the "Great Recession" is over, but anyone that seriously studies this topic will find overwhelming evidence that does not support this optimism.
As of April 2010, the U.S. unemployment rate was at 9.5 percent, and Americans are still struggling financially, with an average personal savings rate of just over 3 percent. Nearly half of U.S. workers now have less than $10,000 in retirement savings, and 27 percent have less than $1,000!
Meanwhile, a recent analysis of government data by USA Today found that Americans are getting less of their personal income from private businesses and more from government benefits like Social Security, unemployment insurance and food stamps.
Income from private businesses is actually now at its lowest share in U.S. history, according to the USA Today report!
"The trend is not sustainable, says University of Michigan economist Donald Grimes. Reason: The federal government depends on private wages to generate income taxes to pay for its ever-more-expensive programs."
At the same time, the U.S. dollar is being devalued at record pace. Where the value of U.S. currency was once backed by gold, today it is literally created out of thin air…
This newsletter is clearly about health, but when I have surveyed readers in the past about their primary obstacle to achieving health, the leading answer was always 'not having enough money to have a healthy lifestyle.'
If events play out as some experts predict, the US economy will face some serious challenges and if you aren't prepared for this, you and your family may not have enough resources to even purchase quality food to stay healthy.
There are compelling reasons why you will want to consider taking some proactive safety measures against the clear and coming massive destruction of the dollar. Many experts believe a reasonable approach would be to have three months of your income in gold and silver coins in your physical possession. Merely holding gold or silver stocks simply won't cut it.
You may not have been watching the markets, but in the last month gold has gone up 10 percent and silver 20 percent in value.
You might find this article interesting, written by a friend of mine, which I posted in April of 2009.
Staying Healthy More Important than Ever
All of these political and financial factors have resulted in the tragic consequence that most families in the U.S. are just one bad diagnosis away from a financial catastrophe.
Taking care of your health may indeed be more important than ever.
I'm convinced that your body is designed to stay healthy, if given the appropriate raw materials like healthful unprocessed food, sleep, exercise, appropriate amounts of sunshine to optimize your vitamin D levels, love, emotional balancing, along with limited exposure to toxins and poisons.
Do that, and your body will typically repay you with good health, barring an accident. It's really not very complicated at all.
If you fail to follow these guidelines, no amount of money (and certainly no drug) will protect you from disease. However, in a troubled economy such as what we're faced with today, if you aren't wealthy, disease has the potential to completely ruin you financially.
I have summarized the major highlights of my health program into three different categories, beginner, intermediate and advanced. You can click on these links to find my comprehensive recommendations to improve your health and avoid ever becoming ill.
Remember, as long as your focus is on drugs and surgical interventions, you will never see the fundamental changes that are so desperately needed – either in your health, or the health care system as a whole. It can only be accomplished by a radical change in how you, and how society as a whole, think about health.
More than 1.5 million people receive this newsletter. We CAN make a huge difference simply by spreading the messages of how to create optimal health.
- The health care bill is not going to solve the epidemic of obesity and poor health.
- The food safety bill is not going to solve the problems of not having access to safe, unadulterated, health-promoting foods.
- The taxes you pay are not going to assure that you have access to medical programs like Medicare and Medicaid when you need it.
- The government is not going to bail you out of bankruptcy if you become ill and rack up medical bills that your insurance won't cover.
- The FDA will not protect you against dangerous drugs and questionable medical treatments.
- The government is not going to regulate the toxins in your soil and water and personal care products…
At least not anytime soon.
In the end, you have to take responsibility for your own health, and stand up for your right to nutritious, whole foods and helpful dietary supplements whose side effects won't kill you.
Part of this is taking back your political voice and demanding your representatives to do their job right, and to quit being seduced by corporate interests.
