A new study shows that exposure to fluoride may lower children's intelligence. Fluoride is added to 70 percent of U.S. public drinking water supplies.
More than 500 children aged 8 to 13 from two different towns were studied and tested. One city had fluoridated water, and the other did not.
PR Newswire reports:
"About 28 percent of the children in the low-fluoride area scored as bright, normal or higher intelligence compared to only 8 percent in the 'high' fluoride area ... in the high-fluoride city, 15 percent had scores indicating mental retardation and only 6 percent in the low-fluoride city."
If you live in the United States, more likely than not you’re drinking tap water that contains added fluoride. The United States is one of only eight countries in the entire developed world that fluoridates more than 50 percent of its water supply, under the guise that it helps prevent and control tooth decay …
The sad reality is, however, that there is practically no difference in tooth decay rates between fluoridated and non-fluoridated countries, and no difference between states that fluoridate a high versus low percentage of their water.
Yet, while fluoride in drinking water does NOT decrease rates of tooth decay, numerous studies show that this chemical has an array of devastating health effects that are being imposed on you and your family whether you like it or not. One of those risks, as Dr. Paul Connett, director of the Fluoride Action Network, recently reported, is lowered intelligence in your children.
Fluoride May Harm Your Child’s Brain and IQ
Fluoride is known to interfere with basic functions of nerve cells in your brain. There are now numerous animal and human studies demonstrating the damage fluoride inflicts on your brain, including your pineal gland.
The latest study even accounted for other potential variables, such as lead exposure, iodine deficiency or a history of brain disease or head injury.
Even after accounting for this, about 28 percent of the children in the low-fluoride area scored as “bright, normal or higher intelligence” compared to only 8 percent in the high-fluoride area. Further, 15 percent of children in the high-fluoride city had signs of mental retardation, compared with only 6 percent in the low-fluoride city.
- Reduction in nicotinic acetylcholine receptors
- Reduction in lipid content
- Impaired antioxidant defense systems
- Damage to the hippocampus
- Damage to the purkinje cells
- Increased uptake of aluminum
- Formation of beta-amyloid plaques (the classic brain abnormality in Alzheimer's disease)
- Exacerbation of lesions induced by iodine deficiency
- Accumulation of fluoride in the pineal gland
Some of these effects have been observed even at low levels of exposure, such as 1 part per million (ppm) of fluoride in water. This is below the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) 'safe' drinking water level for fluoride, which is 4 ppm, and right around the levels used in water fluoridation programs, which Dr. Connett reports may range from 0.7-1.2 ppm.
Fluoride can also increase manganese absorption, compounding problems since manganese in drinking water has also been linked to lower IQ in children.
U.S. Citizens Have No Say in Whether or Not Their Water is Fluoridated
Given the proven health risks of fluoride in drinking water, it is reasonable that many Americans would rather NOT have it coming out of their tap. But really you have no choice in the matter, as it’s added to water supplies as a matter of course.
Once you put fluoride in the water, there is no way to control the dose, or who gets it and how much they get. There is no oversight. Everyone is essentially forced to take the same medication, with an uncontrolled and unmonitored dose.
No other drug is administered in this “one size fits all” way. Fluoride in water is not even regulated by the FDA -- even though it does regulate fluoride in toothpaste and other oral care products.
It is also important to understand that fluoride is being used as a drug and no other drug has ever been administered as a public health measure. It really is a major intrusion on your freedom of choice.
Forcing you to ingest fluoride in your drinking water is a careless and dangerous public health practice, and it’s simply bad medicine. There is NO OTHER DRUG that is forced upon the public in this way. Again, it’s a major assault on your freedom of choice.
Remember, fluoride is a nonessential nutrient, meaning not required by your body. No disease develops in humans when they are “deprived” of fluoride. Even the promoters of fluoridation have finally conceded the benefits of fluoride are only topical -- it works from the outside of your tooth, not from inside your body.
So why swallow it?
Join the Fight to Get Fluoride Out of Drinking Water
Fluoride is really difficult to filter out of your water once it is added, and many people do not have the resources or the knowledge to do so. So the only real solution to keep fluoride out of your drinking water is to stop the archaic practice of water fluoridation in the United States in the first place.
The Fluoride Action Network is an absolutely phenomenal resource for further education, and they're doing much to pressure the U.S. government for change. We are working together to devise a complete game plan to tackle this issue head on. Once we reach the tipping point, which may be as little as 5 percent of the population, we will be able to reverse the policies of water fluoridation.
We're not going to be able to pass a federal law against fluoridation. There is not going to be a presidential mandate or even state statutes. This change will occur one community at a time, as recently occurred in Waterloo, Ontario in Canada.
The Fluoride Action Network’s statement calling for an end to fluoridation worldwide now been signed by more than 3,200 professionals. If you are a medical or science professional, I also encourage you to sign their statement.
Later this year we plan on developing a massive social networking initiative to form local groups in which you can work on removing fluoride in your local community. We will have access to online tools that will help you replicate success other Canadian and American municipalities have had in removing fluoride.
Our fluoride initiative will largely focus on Canada, because 60 percent of Canada is already non-fluoridated. If we can get the rest of Canada to stop fluoridating their water, we believe the U.S. will be forced to follow.

In addition, I highly recommend getting a copy of Dr. Connett's new book, The Case Against Fluoride, and downloading my free report on water fluoridation, for more information on the bad science and political agendas that got this toxic chemical in our drinking water and, at least for now, are keeping it there.
